3D image acquisition system based on shape from focus technique

2013

agent Agrosup Dijon de l'UMREcolDurGEAPSI; This paper describes the design of a 3D image acquisition system dedicated to natural complex scenes composed of randomly distributed objects with spatial discontinuities. In agronomic sciences, the 3D acquisition of natural scene is difficult due to the complex nature of the scenes. Our system is based on the Shape from Focus technique initially used in the microscopic domain. We propose to adapt this technique to the macroscopic domain and we detail the system as well as the image processing used to perform such technique. The Shape from Focus technique is a monocular and passive 3D acquisition method that resolves the occlusion problem affecting…

Load-carrying capacity of axially-loaded RC members with circular openings

2012

Abstract Core drilling is today one of the most used technique among the group of partially destructive testing methods in reinforced concrete (RC) members. Even if the engineering practice provided to extract cores only in beams, taking samples from columns could be often necessary. In this case, the presence of the hole introduced a geometrical discontinuity in the member, creating a disturbed region. Consequently, compressive stresses will disperse in lateral direction as they have to avoid the drilled area. A bursting tensile force will develop, in orthogonal direction to the column axis, and if no sufficient reinforcement was arranged, a vertical crack will form, leading to the concret…

Sub specie æternitatis: the role of the ruin and the ancient in the process of architectural renewal between metamorphosis and resurgence

2022

Composing new works of architecture inspired by vestiges from antiquity or archaeology. The reflections and the case study which will be proposed, pertaining to a recent design experiment for the archaeological area and Antiquarium of Tyndaris, are dedicated to this theme. Over and above any charm exerted by such places, by landscapes in which the ruins appear identical in substance and which sometimes manifest themselves as “sub specie æternitatis”, there are reasons linked to the very profession of architect and to the gashes in the crucible of controversies around the role of history in its contentious relationship with architectural design. That apart, the aporias revealed by Michel Fou…

Transfers of care between healthcare professionals in obstetric units of different sizes across spain and in a hospital in Ireland: The midconbirth s…

2020

Background: In Europe, the majority of healthy women give birth at conventional obstetric units with the assistance of registered midwives. This study examines the relationships between the intrapartum transfer of care (TOC) from midwife to obstetrician-led maternity care, obstetric unit size (OUS) with different degrees of midwifery autonomy, intrapartum interventions and birth outcomes. Methods: A prospective, multicentre, cross-sectional study promoted by the COST Action IS1405 was carried out at eight public hospitals in Spain and Ireland between 2016&ndash

Effectiveness of Private and Public High Schools: Evidence from Finland

2019

Abstract A number of papers have compared the effectiveness of private and public schools in different institutional settings. However, most of these studies are observational and do not utilize experimental or quasi-experimental design to evaluate the value-added or the effectiveness of private schools in comparison to public schools. This study focuses on private and public high schools in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. We use two different methods to compare private and public schools, value-added estimation and regression discontinuity design (RDD). Although based on somewhat different assumptions, both methods allow us to evaluate the causal effect of private schools on the exi…

G. Herglotz’ Behandlung von Beschleunigungswellen in seiner Vorlesung «Mechanik der Kontinua» angewandt auf die Stosswellen von Christoffel

1981

Following a lecture delivered by Herglotz in 1925/26 we briefly treat acceleration waves in hyperelastic materials. Our main result is a divergence equation for the squared Euclidean norm of the so-called ‘wave vector’. We then apply Herglotz’ method (devised for acceleration waves) to the propagation of such first order discontinuities in elastic bodies as were treated by Christoffel in [1].

New insights into the reading of Paleozoic plant fossil record discontinuities

2011

Studying the discontinuity patterns of Paleozoic vascular plants provides a global vision of these key events from the multivariate methods viewpoint. Non-metric multidimensional scaling, detrended correspondence analysis and cluster analysis have been employed together with a set of diversity and abundance measures and an evaluation of the geologic constraints from the plant fossil record data. The results reveal four clear significant discontinuities in terms of taxonomic composition and record representativeness during the early-middle Devonian, Devonian–Carboniferous, Mississippian–Pennsylvanian and early-late Permian. Due to the controversial character of the plant fossil record data a…
