¿Qué podemos pedir a una teoría de la justicia? Algunas consideraciones acerca de un debate entre Amartya Sen y John Rawls

2010

In this paper I try to revise Sen’s thesis about the «transcendental» nature of Rawls’ theory of justice. According to Sen transcendental theories of justice are unnecessary. What we aim at is to justify a series of comparative judgements about two or more states of affairs. We do not strive, unlike Rawls, to form a complete system of moral principles that backs an «ideal just society». I try to show that Sen’s «comparative» account is weak. First of all, Sen does not offer a fair interpretation of Rawls’ theory. In particular, he is wrong when he depicts Rawls’ justice as fairness as a complete and transcendental moral doctrine. Secondly, Sen overlooks the fact that in order to justify comp…

Central polynomials of graded algebras: Capturing their exponential growth

2022

Let G be a finite abelian group and let A be an associative G-graded algebra over a field of characteristic zero. A central G-polynomial is a polynomial of the free associative G-graded algebra that takes central values for all graded substitutions of homogeneous elements of A. We prove the existence and the integrability of two limits called the central G-exponent and the proper central G-exponent that give a quantitative measure of the growth of the central G-polynomials and the proper central G-polynomials, respectively. Moreover, we compare them with the G-exponent of the algebra.

Superalgebras: Polynomial identities and asymptotics

2022

To any superalgebra A is attached a numerical sequence cnsup(A), n≥1, called the sequence of supercodimensions of A. In characteristic zero its asymptotics are an invariant of the superidentities satisfied by A. It is well-known that for a PI-superalgebra such sequence is exponentially bounded and expsup(A)=limn→∞⁡cnsup(A)n is an integer that can be explicitly computed. Here we introduce a notion of fundamental superalgebra over a field of characteristic zero. We prove that if A is such an algebra, then C1ntexpsup(A)n≤cnsup(A)≤C2ntexpsup(A)n, where C1>0,C2,t are constants and t is a half integer that can be explicitly written as a linear function of the dimension of the even part of A an…

A Proposal to estimate the roaming–dog Total in an urban area through a PPSWOR spatial sampling with sample size greater than two

2018

Settore SECS-S/05 - Statistica SocialeDogs roaming in urban areas constitute an issue for public order hygiene and health. Proper planning of actions for health and security control and allocation of financial funds require the knowledge of the roaming–dog–population size in a given urban area. Unfortunately a reliable statistical procedure aimed to measure such population is not available yet in literature. This paper presents a simple reproducible survey sampling procedure to estimate the number of roaming dogs in an urban area through the description of a real study carried out on a restricted area of the city of Palermo in southern Italy. A sample of areas is drawn by means of a drawn–by–drawn spatial sampling with probabilities proportional to size and without replacement (PPSWOR). As inclusion probabilities are not available in closed form they are estimated by Monte Carlo approach which is of simple implementation and permits design–based variance estimation even when first–order inclusion probabilities are unknown.

Hochschild Cohomology Theories in White Noise Analysis

2008

We show that the continuous Hochschild cohomology and the differential Hochschild cohomology of the Hida test algebra endowed with the normalized Wick product are the same.

Capillary experiments of flow induced crystallization of HDPE

1990

Flow-induced crystallization experiments are made in a capillary apparatus modified with a downstream reservoir under pressure. Capillary length, diameter, and entrance angle are changed, as well as flow rate. The results show that the crystallization temperature is influenced both by the elongational flow at the capillary entrance and by the shear flow along the capillary. The independent effect of the pressure equals that obtained under static conditions. The effect of shear is correlated in terms of shearing work.

An in vitro evaluation of the effect of sandblasting and laser surface treatment on the shear bond strength of a composite resin to the facial surfac…

2015

Objectives: The present study was conducted to evaluate the optimal method of enhancing the bond strength of a composite resin to the facial surface of the primary anterior stainless steel crowns using various surface treatments namely Nd: YAG laser surface treatment, sandblasting , alloy primer application and no surface treatment. Study Design: The study sample consisted of 60 primary anterior stainless steel crowns (UnitekTM size R 4), with 15 samples randomly divided into the 4 study groups, embedded in acrylic blocks. The facial surface of these surface treated crowns was utilized as the bonding surface to which 2.5mm diameter composite resin cylinders were bonded for the evaluation of…

On Shimura subvarieties of the Prym locus

2018

We show that families of Pryms of abelian Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ in $A_{g-1}$ (resp. $A_g$) do not give rise to high dimensional Shimura subvareties.

The Oort conjecture on Shimura curves in the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves

2017

Abstract Oort has conjectured that there do not exist Shimura varieties of dimension >0 contained generically in the Torelli locus of genus-g curves when g is sufficiently large. In this paper we prove the analogue of this conjecture for Shimura curves with respect to the hyperelliptic Torelli locus of genus g > 7 .
