Convex functions on Carnot Groups

We consider the definition and regularity properties of convex functions in Carnot groups. We show that various notions of convexity in the subelliptic setting that have appeared in the literature are equivalent. Our point of view is based on thinking of convex functions as subsolutions of homogeneous elliptic equations.
Experiments with an adaptive Bayesian restoration method

Abstract This paper describes a Bayesian restoration method applied to two-dimensional measured images, whose detector response function is not completely known. The response function is assumed Gaussian with standard deviation depending on the estimate of the local density of the image. The convex hull of the K -nearest neighbours ( K NN) of each ‘on’ pixel is used to compute the local density. The method has been tested on ‘sparse’ images, with and without noise background.
Thermally Induced Structural Modification of Silica Nanoparticles Investigated by Raman and Infrared Absorption Spectroscopies

We report an experimental investigation by Raman and infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopies on the structural modifications induced by isochronal thermal treatments on amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles (fumed silica). In particular, three different commercial types of this material, characterized by particle mean diameters of 7, 14, and 40 nm, were subjected to thermal treatments from 100 up to 1000 °C. We found that some properties of fumed silica, such as the SiOSi mean bond angle, ring size distribution, and surface adsorbed water content, are drastically different from those of common bulk silica materials and intimately related to the particles' dimension. Abstract Flow velocity controls hillslope soil erosion and is a key hydrodynamic variable involved in sediment transport and deposition processes. The dye-tracer technique is one of the most applied methods for measuring velocity of shallow interrill and rill flow. The technique is based on the injection of a tracer in a specific point and the measurement of its speed to travel the known distance from the injection point to a given channel section. The aim of the present paper was to analyze some non-linear dynamic properties of the resting EEG from healthy subjects under eyes closed conditions. For this purpose we digitally filtered the spontaneous EEG in the theta (3-8 Hz) and alpha frequency range (8-13 Hz) and considered these independent rhythms as signals from a deterministic system. Under certain conditions non-linear dynamic systems are able to generate deterministic chaos, which means that similar causes do not produce similar effects. This article deals with the application of methods from the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems to EEG signals. Theoretical background, mathematical concepts and algorithms for the calculation of "non-linear parameters" are reviewed and influences of the structure of reconstructed data sets on the calculations are pointed out. We present results for the estimation of the correlation dimension D2 and the principal Lyapunov-exponent lambda 1 for sleep EEG data respectively from 10 and 15 healthy subjects corresponding to different sleep stages. This paper is concerned with small angular scale experiments for the observation of cosmic microwave background anisotropies. In the absence of beam, the effects of partial coverage and pixelisation are disentangled and analyzed (using simulations). Then, appropriate maps involving the CMB signal plus the synchrotron and dust emissions from the Milky Way are simulated, and an asymmetric beam --which turns following different strategies-- is used to smooth the simulated maps. Beam deconvolution in noisy CMB maps

The subject of this paper is beam deconvolution in small angular scale CMB experiments. The beam effect is reversed using the Jacobi iterative method, which was designed to solved systems of algebraic linear equations. The beam is a non circular one which moves according to the observational strategy. A certain realistic level of Gaussian instrumental noise is assumed. The method applies to small scale CMB experiments in general (cases A and B), but we have put particular attention on Planck mission at 100 GHz (cases C and D). We present measurements of the angular diameter distance to and Hubble parameter at z = 0.57 from the measurement of the baryon acoustic peak in the correlation of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. Our analysis is based on a sample from Data Release 9 of 264 283 galaxies over 3275 square degrees in the redshift range 0.43 z DA(0.57) = 1408 ± 45 Mpc and H(0.57) = 92.9 ± 7.8 km s-1 Mpc-1 for our fiducial value of the sound horizon.
