Methods Out of 470 patients who underwent esophagectomy for malignancy between September 1985 and September 2005, a total number of 175 patients presented with esophageal adenocarcinoma. To evaluate the usefulness of the captopril test for identifying renal artery stenosis (RAS) and renovascular hypoplasia (RAH), we studied 48 hypertensive patients. In 20 hypertensives with screening procedures indicating renovascular disease and in 28 essential hypertensives (EH), the plasma renin activity (PRA) responses to an oral test dose of captopril (50 mg) were studied. A 60-min post-captopril PRA increase of 150% (or 400% if baseline PRA < or = 3 ng/ml/h) was considered as positive. Renal angiography was performed in all cases. This study was designed to evaluate the role of fasting serum insulin and plasma renin activity in obesity-induced hypertension. In view of this, plasma catecholamines, fasting serum insulin (IRI), urinary sodium excretion (NaU), plasma renin activity (PRA), and plasma aldosterone (PA) levels were assessed in young (age less than 40 years) normotensive (n = 27) and hypertensive (n = 14) subjects with central obesity and in lean normotensives (n = 20). Differences in skeletal muscle characteristics, metabolic profiles and functional performance between males and females were investigated using young (15--24 yrs) male and female twins as subjects. The comparison included such variables as anthropometry, muscle strength, mechanical power, maximum oxygen uptake, electrical activation of muscle, muscle fibre composition (m. vastus lateralis), and activities of several skeletal muscle enzymes. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: a treatment for extreme oligospermia.

AbstractPurpose: We evaluated the efficacy of intracytoplasmic sperm injection in patients with extreme oligospermia.Materials and Methods: A total of 67 intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles was attempted in 58 infertile couples in which the husbands had extreme oligospermia (less than 100,000 spermatozoa per ml. ejaculate).Results: Fertilization was achieved in 65 of 67 cycles. Mean fertilization rate per cycle was 66.4 percent. A total of 18 clinical pregnancies was obtained, for a pregnancy rate of 26.8 percent per started cycle. OBJECTIVE The effect of pentoxifylline on Klotho levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with chronic kidney disease (CKD) was assessed in a post hoc analysis of the Pentoxifylline for Renoprotection in Diabetic Nephropathy (PREDIAN) trial. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Circulating and urinary tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Klotho were measured before and after 1 year of pentoxifylline. The effect on Klotho expression was assessed in cultured renal tubular cells. RESULTS Pentoxifylline administration resulted in decreased serum and urinary TNF-α, whereas serum and urinary Klotho increased significantly.
