Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters: Towards an Optimal Biocompatible System from a Theoretical-Experimental Strategy.

2021

Potential biomedical applications of gold nanoparticles have increasingly been reported with great promise for diagnosis and therapy of several diseases. However, for such a versatile nanomaterial, the advantages and potential health risks need to be addressed carefully, as the available information about their toxicity is limited and inconsistent. Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have emerged to overcome this challenge due to their unique features, such as superior stability, excellent biocompatibility, and efficient renal clearance. Remarkably, the elucidation of their structural and physicochemical properties provided by theory-experiment investigations offers exciting opport…

Connections Between Theory and Experiment for Gold and Silver Nanoclusters.

2018

Ligand-stabilized gold and silver nanoparticles are of tremendous current interest in sensing, catalysis, and energy applications. Experimental and theoretical studies have closely interacted to elucidate properties such as the geometric and electronic structures of these fascinating systems. In this review, the interplay between theory and experiment is described; areas such as optical absorption and doping, where the theory–experiment connections are well established, are discussed in detail; and the current status of these connections in newer fields of study, such as luminescence, transient absorption, and the effects of solvent and the surrounding environment, are highlighted. Close co…

Formation of Gold(I) Edge Oxide at Flat Gold Nanoclusters on an Ultrathin MgO Film under Ambient Conditions

2010

Many active gold catalysts are prepared onreducible oxides, and strong interactions between the supportand the gold particle may create active sites at the peripheryclose to the particle–support interface. These interactionsmay also include charge transfer to or from the particle. Forpurely geometric reasons, small particles have a high propor-tion of low-coordinated edge and corner atoms that might actas reaction centers. Also, thermal effects from localized softphonon modes at particle edges may contribute to thelowering of critical reaction barriers.Lately, a large amount of work has been conducted toelucidate the properties of gold clusters on ultrathin (a fewmonolayers (ML) thick) MgO …

Multiband light emission and nanoscale chemical analyses of carbonized fumed silica

2018

Fumed silica with a specific area of 295 m2/g was carbonized by successive phenyltrimethoxysilane treatments followed by annealing in inert atmosphere up to 650 °C. Emission, excitation, kinetics, and photo-induced bleaching effects were investigated by steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies. The local chemistry was also studied by infrared transmission spectroscopy. Strong ultraviolet and visible photoluminescence was observed in the samples after the chemical treatments/modifications and thermal annealing. It has been shown that ultraviolet photoluminescence in chemically modified fumed silica is associated with phenyl groups, while near ultraviolet and visible em…

X-RAY PHOTOEMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE DETERMINATION OF ORIGINS OF ROOM TEMPERATURE FERROMAGNETISM AND PHOTOLUMINESCENCE IN HIGHCo-CONTENTCoxZn1-xOF…

2014

In this paper, we reported on the X-ray photoemission electron microscope (XPEEM) determination of magnetic and luminescence origins for two CoxZn1-xO films. The cobalt fraction x of radio frequency co-sputtered samples were 0.86(2) and 0.92(2), respectively. Films were ferromagnetic and semiconductive. Unique narrow green color lines beside the ZnO intrinsic emissions were found with a decay time in microsecond range at room temperature. Origins of magnetic and luminescence properties were determined with XPEEM. The X-ray absorption near edge structure at the Co  L3-edge denoted that Co was partially oxidized, and phase-contrast images together with chemical composition identification furt…

Self assembled hydrophobic nanoclusters of poly(methyl methacrylate) embedded into polyvinyl alcohol based hydrophilic matrix: Preparation and water …

2009

Hydrophilic matrices containing nanosized clusters of hydrophilic moieties have demonstrated potential applications in biomedical field. A novel hydrogel containing nanosized domains (20–35 nm) of hydrophobic moieties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by grafting crosslinked poly(acrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) chains onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) backbone using an efficient redox system. The graft copolymerization process was investigated to observe the influence of gel components on the kinetic parameters of grafting such as rate of grafting (Rg), grafting yield (Gy) and grafting efficiency (Ge). The prepared graft nanohydrogel was evaluated for its water sorption poten…

Chemically Selective Imaging of Individual Bonds through Scanning Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy: Disulfide Bridges Linking Gold Nanoclusters

2020

As proof-of-principle of chemically selective, spatially resolved imaging of individual bonds, we carry out electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscopy instrument on atomically precise, thiolate-coated gold nanoclusters linked with 5,5'-bis(mercaptomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine dithiol ligands. The images allow the identification of bridging disulfide bonds (R-S-S-R) between clusters, and X-ray photoelectron spectra support the finding.

Silicon-based light-emitting devices: Properties and applications of crystalline, amorphous and er-doped nanoclusters

2006

In this paper, we summarize the results of an extensive investigation on the properties of MOS-type light-emitting devices based on silicon nanostructures. The performances of crystalline, amorphous, and Er-doped Si nanostructures are presented and compared. We show that all devices are extremely stable and robust, resulting in an intense room temperature electroluminescence (EL) at around 900 nm or at 1.54 μm. Amorphous nanoclusters are more conductive than the crystalline counterpart. In contrast, nonradiative processes seem to be more efficient for amorphous clusters resulting in a lower quantum efficiency. Erbium doping results in the presence of an intense EL at 1.54 μm with a concomit…

Gold Nanowired: A Linear (Au25)n Polymer from Au25 Molecular Clusters

2014

Au25(SR)18 has provided fundamental insights into the properties of clusters protected by monolayers of thiolated ligands (SR). Because of its ultrasmall core, 1 nm, Au25(SR)18 displays molecular behavior. We prepared a Au25 cluster capped by n-butanethiolates (SBu), obtained its structure by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and studied its properties both experimentally and theoretically. Whereas in solution Au25(SBu)18(0) is a paramagnetic molecule, in the crystal it becomes a linear polymer of Au25 clusters connected via single Au-Au bonds and stabilized by proper orientation of clusters and interdigitation of ligands. At low temperature, [Au25(SBu)18(0)]n has a nonmagnetic ground s…
