Twisting graphene nanoribbons into carbon nanotubes

2011

Although carbon nanotubes consist of honeycomb carbon, they have never been fabricated from graphene directly. Here, it is shown by quantum molecular-dynamics simulations and classical continuum-elasticity modeling, that graphene nanoribbons can, indeed, be transformed into carbon nanotubes by means of twisting. The chiralities of the tubes thus fabricated can be not only predicted but also externally controlled. This twisting route is an opportunity for nanofabrication, and is easily generalizable to ribbons made of other planar nanomaterials.

Bending-Induced Delamination of van der Waals Solids

2013

Although sheets of layered van der Waals solids offer great opportunities to custom-design nanomaterial properties, their weak interlayer adhesion challenges structural stability against mechanical deformation. Here, bending-induced delamination of multilayer sheets is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, using graphene as an archetypal van der Waals solid. Simulations show that delamination of a graphene sheet occurs when its radius of curvature decreases roughly below $R_c=5.3\text{nm}\times (\text{number of layers})^{3/2}$ and that, as a rule, one-third of the layers get delaminated. These clear results are explained by a general and transparent model, a useful future referenc…

ChemInform Abstract: Unexpected Magnetism in Nanomaterials

2013

Conventional magnetic order in a material requires the partially filled d or f bands. The exchange interactions between the electrons in these partially filled bands give rise to a magnetic order. However, the discovery of unexpected magnetism observed in some nanomaterials, which have the d and f shells either completely empty or full, has challenged our understanding of magnetism in conventional materials. The magnetism in nanomaterials shows the effects of reduced dimensions, reduced coordination of atoms at the surface and some quantum effects which dominate at low dimensions. In this review paper we give a brief review and discuss the unexpected magnetism experimentally observed and/or…

Solid state NMR studies of gels derived from low molecular mass gelators

2016

The emergence of NMR crystallography provides a unique opportunity to study solids, gels and xerogels, thereby providing ample information to elucidate molecular packing in the native gel. This review details the importance as well as the application of solid state NMR spectroscopy combined with other analytical tools to study gels derived from low molecular mass organo- and hydrogelators.

Gas sensing properties of Zn-doped p-type nickel ferrite

2012

Abstract The influence of zinc ion to the NiFe2O4 p-type semiconductor gas response characteristics is demonstrated. For characterization of gas sensor material, synthesized by sol–gel auto combustion method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), DC resistance and impedance spectroscopy (IS) measurements were employed. The response change of Zn doped nickel ferrite is related to the interruption of hole hopping between nickel ions. This was improved by change of conductivity type with temperature and gas exposure.

Mesoporous inorganic nanoscale particles for drug adsorption and controlled release.

2018

The review provides an overview of the mesoporous inorganic particles employed as drug delivery systems for controlled and sustained release of drugs. We have classified promising nanomaterials for drug delivery on the basis of their natural or synthetic origin. Nanoclays are available in different morphologies (nanotubes, nanoplates and nanofibers) and they are typically available at low cost from natural resources. The surface chemistry of nanoclays is versatile for targeted modifications to control loading and release properties. Synthetic nanomaterials (imogolite, laponite and mesoporous silica) present the advantages of well-established purity and availability with size features that …

Nanomaterials and devices for energy storage and conversion

2019

Solvent-mediated assembly of atom-precise gold–silver nanoclusters to semiconducting one-dimensional materials

2020

Bottom-up design of functional device components based on nanometer-sized building blocks relies on accurate control of their self-assembly behavior. Atom-precise metal nanoclusters are well-characterizable building blocks for designing tunable nanomaterials, but it has been challenging to achieve directed assembly to macroscopic functional cluster-based materials with highly anisotropic properties. Here, we discover a solvent-mediated assembly of 34-atom intermetallic gold–silver clusters protected by 20 1-ethynyladamantanes into 1D polymers with Ag–Au–Ag bonds between neighboring clusters as shown directly by the atomic structure from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Density fun…
