Plenty of motion at the bottom: atomically thin liquid gold membrane
2015
The discovery of graphene some ten years ago was the first proof of a free-standing two-dimensional (2D) solid phase. Here, using quantum molecular dynamics simulations of nanoscale gold patches suspended in graphene pores, we predict the existence of an atomically thin, free-standing 2D liquid phase. The liquid phase, enabled by the exceptional planar stability of gold due to relativistic effects, demonstrates extreme fluxionality of metal nanostructures and opens possibilities for a variety of nanoscale phenomena.
Nanoscale inhomogeneity of the Schottky barrier and resistivity inMoS2multilayers
2015
Conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) is employed to investigate the current injection from a nanometric contact (a Pt coated tip) to the surface of ${\text{MoS}}_{2}$ thin films. The analysis of local current-voltage characteristics on a large array of tip positions provides high spatial resolution information on the lateral homogeneity of the $\mathrm{tip}/{\text{MoS}}_{2}$ Schottky barrier ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}_{B}$ and ideality factor $n$, and on the local resistivity ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\text{loc}}$ of the ${\text{MoS}}_{2}$ region under the tip. Here, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}_{B}=300\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}24\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\text{meV}, n=1.60\ifmmode…
Highly localized accelerating beams using nano-scale metallic gratings
2015
Spatially accelerating beams are non-diffracting beams whose intensity is localized along curvilinear trajectories, also incomplete circular trajectories, before diffraction broadening governs their propagation. In this paper we report on numerical simulations showing the conversion of a high-numerical-aperture focused beam into a nonparaxial shape-preserving accelerating beam having a beam-width near the diffraction limit. Beam shaping is induced near the focal region by a diffractive optical element that consists of a non-planar subwavelength grating enabling a Bessel signature. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the project TEC2011-29120…
Generation of accelerating beams using nano-scale metallic circular gratings
2014
Spatially accelerating beams that are solutions to the Maxwell equations may propagate along incomplete circular trajectories, after which diffraction broadening takes over and the beams spread out. In this paper we report on numerical simulations that show the conversion of a high-numerical-aperture focused beam into a nonparaxial shape-preserving accelerating beam having a beam-width near the diffraction limit. Beam shaping is induced by a diffractive optical element that consists of a non-planar sub-wavelength grating enabling a Bessel signature.
Nanoscale X-ray detectors based on individual CdS, SnO2 and ZnO nanowires
2021
Abstract The development of nanoscale X-ray sensors is of crucial importance to achieve higher spatial resolution in many X-ray-based techniques playing a key role in materials science, healthcare, and security. Here, we demonstrate X-ray detection using individual CdS, SnO 2 , and ZnO nanowires (NWs). The NWs were produced via vapor–liquid–solid technique and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy . Electrical measurements were performed under ambient conditions while exposing two-terminal NW-based devices to X-rays generated by a conventional tungsten anode X-ray tube. Fast and stable nanoampere-range X-ray beam induced current (XBIC) in resp…
Maximizing the information gain of a single ion microscope using bayes experimental design
2016
We show nanoscopic transmission microscopy, using a deterministic single particle source and compare the resulting images in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, with those of conventional Poissonian sources. Our source is realized by deterministic extraction of laser-cooled calcium ions from a Paul trap. Gating by the extraction event allows for the suppression of detector dark counts by six orders of magnitude. Using the Bayes experimental design method, the deterministic characteristics of this source are harnessed to maximize information gain, when imaging structures with a parametrizable transmission function. We demonstrate such optimized imaging by determining parameter values of one and …
LATTICE–BOLTZMANN SIMULATION OF DENSE NANOFLOWS: A COMPARISON WITH MOLECULAR DYNAMICS AND NAVIER–STOKES SOLUTIONS
2007
In a recent work, a dense fluid flow across a nanoscopic thin plate was simulated by means of Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Lattice Boltzmann (LB) methods. It was found that in order to recover quantitative agreement with MD results, the LB simulation must be pushed down to sub–nanoscopic scales, i.e. fractions of the range of molecular interactions. In this work, we point out that in this sub–nanoscopic regime, the LB method works outside the hydrodynamic limit at the level of a single cell spacing. A quantitative comparison with the Navier–Stokes (NS) solution shows however that LB and NS results are quite similar, thereby indicating that, apart for a small region past the plate, this nano…
On ripples and rafts: Curvature induced nanoscale structures in lipid membranes
2014
We develop an elastic theory that predicts the spontaneous formation of nanoscale structures in lipid bilayers which locally phase separate between two phases with different spontaneous monolayer curvature. The theory rationalizes in a unified manner the observation of a variety of nanoscale structures in lipid membranes: Rippled states in one-component membranes, lipid rafts in multicomponent membranes. Furthermore, we report on recent observations of rippled states and rafts in simulations of a simple coarse-grained model for lipid bilayers, which are compatible with experimental observations and with our elastic model.
Plasmon-based free-radical photopolymerization : effect of diffusion on nanolithography processes
2011
This Article interrogates the mechanisms responsible for nanoscale photopolymerization induced by confined and enhanced electromagnetic fields. Surface plasmon dipolar resonance of individual Ag nanoparticles was used as an optical near-field source to locally trigger the reaction of a photopolymerizable formulation. Laser excitation of the nanoparticles embedded in the formulation reproducibly generates polymer features with typical dimensions ranging from 2 nm to a few tens of nanometer. We have determined the physicochemical parameters and mechanisms controlling the spatial extent of the photopolymerization process. We found that the diffusion of the dye is the main process limiting the …
Nitroarene hydrogenation catalysts based on Pd nanoparticles glued with PDA on inorganic supports: Multivariate Curve Resolution as an useful tool to…
2021
[EN] Two green catalysts based on Pd(0) nanoparticles (Pd NPs) anchored through PDA on porous silica and magnetite have been synthesized using a generalized simple and reproducible "two-step" methodology. Both catalysts were tested for a model reaction, the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol using NaBH4 as the hydrogenating agent, and especially good activity has been achieved in the case of the catalysts containing magnetite as inorganic core (Pd NPs-PDA@Fe3O4). We analyzed the effect associated with the catalyst separation method (centrifugation or magnetically) that affect to the distribution and aggregation degree of the Pd NPs. In addition, we also correlate the final catalyst morphology w…
