Study of the High-Frequency Inductive Coupled Discharge Plasma Interaction with Walls
2007
The high-frequency electrodeless light sources (HFELS) are widely used as bright radiators of narrow and intense spectral lines covering the region from VUV to IR. Special HFELS filled with pure helium at pressures from 0.2 to 5 Torr were prepared for diagnostics of interaction between the filling element and the wall material (glass). Pollution of the discharge plasma with the oxygen admixture was studied by spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy experiments were performed to find modification of the wall surface at the nanoscale level. Release of oxygen by the walls is found to depend strongly on the discharge conditions and significant changes of the surface structure are detected after p…
Influence of low amounts of nanostructured silica and calcium carbonate fillers on the large-area dielectric breakdown performance of bi-axially orie…
2014
Influence of low amounts (1.0-2.0wt-%) of nanostructured silica and calcium carbonate fillers on the large area dielectric breakdown performance of bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is analyzed. A multi-breakdown measurement method based on the self-healing breakdown capability of metallized film is utilized for the breakdown characterization in order to cover relatively large total film areas, thus leading to results of higher relevance from the practical point-of-view. The dispersion and distribution qualities of filler particles at the nanoscale are evaluated with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. Weibull statistical analysis suggests that the breakdown distribution …
Thermodynamics of a small system in a μT reservoir
2011
Abstract Due to advances in experimental techniques operating at the nanoscale, it is possible to compute properties from density fluctuations by studying ‘snapshots’ of particle configurations. Thermodynamics on a small scale is different from thermodynamics in bulk systems. We show how the molar enthalpy h and the inverse thermodynamic correction factor Γ - 1 depend on system size and how these properties can be computed from fluctuations at the nanoscale. We find a 1/ L finite size effect for all thermodynamic quantities for a small system in contact with a reservoir, where L is the length of the system in a single dimension.
Engineering 3D ordered molecular thin films by a nanoscale control
2010
This perspective aims to report on experimental preparation and investigation tools for engineering molecular thin films with a three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale control that is of relevant interest for different emerging applications as well as for the development of calibration standards. Such thin films may be obtained by man-made methods, self-assembly or spatio-temporal self-organization and/or by the combination of these last approaches with external tools. Understanding the main features and the physical-chemistry underlying the related ordering phenomena is in due course and a theoretical framework is under development. In this respect it is of fundamental importance to achieve the a…
Self-organization and nanostructural control in thin film heterojunctions.
2013
In spite of more than two-decades of studies of molecular self-assembly, the achievement of low cost, easy-to-implement and multi-parameter bottom-up approaches to address the supramolecular morphology in three-dimensional (3D) systems is still missing. In the particular case of molecular thin films, the 3D nanoscale morphology and function are crucial for both fundamental and applied research. Here we show how it is possible to tune the 3D film structure (domain size, branching, etc.) of thin film heterojunctions with nanoscale accuracy together with the modulation of their optoelectronic properties by employing an easy two-step approach. At first we prepared multi-planar heterojunctions w…
Hydrokinetic simulations of nanoscopic precursor films in rough channels
2009
We report on simulations of capillary filling of high-wetting fluids in nano-channels with and without obstacles. We use atomistic (molecular dynamics) and hydrokinetic (lattice-Boltzmann) approaches which point out clear evidence of the formation of thin precursor films, moving ahead of the main capillary front. The dynamics of the precursor films is found to obey a square-root law as the main capillary front, z^2(t) ~ t, although with a larger prefactor, which we find to take the same value for the different geometries (2D-3D) under inspection. The two methods show a quantitative agreement which indicates that the formation and propagation of thin precursors can be handled at a mesoscopic…
Soliton staircases and standing strain waves in confined colloidal crystals
2009
We show by computer simulation of a two-dimensional crystal confined by corrugated walls that confinement can be used to impose a controllable mesoscopic superstructure of predominantly mechanical elastic character. Due to an interplay of the particle density of the system and the width D of the confining channel, "soliton staircases" can be created along both parallel confining boundaries, that give rise to standing strain waves in the entire crystal. The periodicity of these waves is of the same order as D. This mechanism should be useful for structure formation in the self-assembly of various nanoscopic materials.
