SummaryBalanced control of neuronal activity is central in maintaining function and viability of neuronal circuits. The endocannabinoid system tightly controls neuronal excitability. Here, we show that endocannabinoids directly target hippocampal glutamatergic neurons to provide protection against acute epileptiform seizures in mice. Functional CB1 cannabinoid receptors are present on glutamatergic terminals of the hippocampal formation, colocalizing with vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGluT1). Synthetic musks are present in fine fragrances, cosmetics, soaps and laundry detergents. One of the most important synthetic musks is 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthaline+ ++ (AHTN; annual production: about 1500 metric tons). An increasing number of studies show that AHTN accumulates in surface water and fish and can be detected in human adipose tissue, as well in human milk. Two thymidine-derived nucleosides 1 and 2 were prepared by attaching a chiral naphthalene to the positions 5′ and 3′ of the sugar. The resulting dyads, which contain key substructures present in drugs and nucleic acids, exhibit different spatial arrangements (transoid or cisoid) of the fluorophore relative to the thymine unit. Emission measurements on these compounds in the presence of ROH molecules revealed a remarkable intramolecular fluorescence quenching for dyad 1. Calix[4]arene-functionalized naphthalene and perylene imide dyes.

[reaction: see text] Calix[4]arenes bearing one, two, or four 1,8-naphthyl imide groups at the wide rim and bis-calix[4]arenes connected via perylene-bisimide dye spacers have been synthesized. The low-temperature NMR spectrum of the tetranaphthylimide suggests, in agreement with a crystal structure, a C2-symmetrical pinched cone conformation stabilized via face-to-face pi-pi interactions between opposite naphthylimide groups. UV-vis and fluorescence studies have been carried out for the perylene bis-calix[4]arene dyes.
Diatropicity of tetraazanaphthalenes

Tetraazanaphthalenes are diatropic molecules, whose magnetic response to a magnetic field perpendicular to the molecular plane closely resembles that of naphthalene. The out-of-plane component of the magnetic susceptibility tensor and its strong anisotropy can be used as quantifiers of magnetic aromaticity. Maps showing streamlines and modulus of the current density field provide clear evidence for diatropicity of these systems. The synthesis of two series of peptidic chains composed of bis(terpyridine)ruthenium(II) acceptor units and organic chromophores (coumarin, naphthalene, anthracene, fluorene) by stepwise solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) techniques is described. The first series of dyads comprises directly amide linked chromophores, while the second one possesses a glycine spacer between the two chromophores. All dyads were studied by UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy, steady-state luminescence, luminescence decay and electrochemistry, as well as by DFT calculations.
