'I had to help my child!': The role of emotions, risk, and trust in use of nasal decongestants in children.
2013
Recent studies suggest that a number of common cold medicines, including nasal decongestants are not suitable for small children. In Latvia nasal decongestants are primarily over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, and patient information leaflets generally permit use of these medicines for small children. The previous studies in Latvia investigating the use of medicines in cases of common cold demonstrated extensive use of decongestants in children less than six years of age, marking a necessity for more profound research. As a result a qualitative study was implemented in 2011 to identify sources of information that offer advice for the use of decongestants in children. The caregivers’ percepti…
Chiral separation of ephedrines by liquid chromatography using β-cyclodextrins
2001
β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) have been evaluated as chiral recognition agents for the enantioseparation of ephedrines by liquid chromatography (LC). The compounds tested were norephedrine, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, N-methylephedrine and N-methylpseuoephedrine. Two possibilities have been investigated, the employment of a chiral stationary phase consisting of immobilized β-cyclodextrin, and the addition of the chiral selector to the mobile phase. In the latter approach the following chiral agents have been assayed, native β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), methyl-β-cyclodextrin (M-β-CD), carboxyethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CE-β-CD), carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)…
The value of Ems Mineral Salts in the treatment of rhinosinusitis in children
2005
Summary The treatment of rhinosinusitis seen in the light of uncertain pathogenesis and variable symptoms is under discussion and ranges from the administration of antibiotics, decongestants and anti-allergic agents to no treatment. In this randomized, prospective, double-blind and controlled study the effect of a 14-day treatment (1–2 sprays into each nostril t.d.) with either isotonic Ems Mineral Salts (EMS) solution (Siemens & Co., Bad Ems, Germany) or xylometazoline solution (0.05%) was tested in children (n = 66) aged 2–6 years. Main outcomes: the degree of mucosal inflammation, nasal patency, general state of health, condition of the middle ear, auditory function as well as an assessm…
Oxymetazoline modulates proinflammatory cytokines and the T‐cell stimulatory capacity of dendritic cells
2007
The nasal decongestant oxymetazoline (OMZ) is frequently used in the topical treatment of rhinitis/sinusitis. As proinflammatory cytokines play a critical role in the development and maintenance of local inflammation, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of OMZ on immune cells in order to diminish the mucosal infiltration of the nose. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from buffy coats of healthy volunteers were isolated and stimulated in the presence or absence of OMZ. In addition, monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DC) were generated and different concentrations of OMZ were added. DC phenotype and their T-cell stimulatory properties were analysed. The vasoactive su…
