Henrik Wergeland's Bouquet: Fredrika Bremer, Sentimentality and Nationalism inJan van Huysum's Flower Piece

2015

Henrik Wergeland's poem Jan van Huysums Blomsterstykke (1840) is often characterized as a key work of Norwegian and Nordic romanticism. Where previous criticism has primarily focused on the poem's ekphrastic dimension, this reading will draw attention to how it employs many forms and genres, at the same time examining neglected thematic strands in the poem. A key lead to the poem's generic placement is provided by its oft-overlooked front-page, paratextual dedication to the Swedish novelist Fredrika Bremer. It will be argued that works by Bremer, such as Hemmet, not only provide some precedent for the ekphrastic dimension of Wergeland's poem, but more importantly reveal the latter text's un…

Goethes „Weltliteratur“: Begriff oder Diskurs?

2018

Based on Birus’ suggestion to understand Goethe as an “initiator of discursive practices”, the present study reconsiders the Goethean comments on World Literature (“Weltliteratur”) not in terms of a concept but rather in terms of a discourse. The initial point is the observation that Goethe’s comments on World literature share in two different notions of culture relevant at the time, namely culture as a technique of comparison that implies a competent and sober handling of cultural difference, as well as culture as ultimate foundation of a group that allows for enthusiastic reference on a community. By operating a combination of competence for comparison and enthusiasm, without however ref…

Techno-cultural opportunities: the anti-immigration movement in the Finnish mediascape

2015

Horsti's article analyses how transformations in the media environment shaped the political success of the anti-immigration movement in Finland from 2003 to 2013. The qualitative textual analysis of blogs and mainstream media debates that relate to racism and the national populist Finns Party demonstrates how changes in the mediascape in general and in new media technology in particular have provided opportunities for the emerging anti-immigration movement. These changes facilitated the earlier development of the Finns Party but the fragmentation of online space later hindered the internal coherence of the movement and its integration into the populist party political family. In order to re…

Identity, nation‐state and football in Spain. the evolution of nationalist feelings in Spanish Football

2007

This essay shows the importance of the identity component in the development of Spanish football from its birth at the beginning of the twentieth century, when football was organized at a regional level, until the present time when football reflects the democratic and post‐national Spain created after the arrival of democracy in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The essay expounds the existence of four periods in the development of the nationalistic feelings with which Spanish football has been embodied: the pre‐national or regional period, the period of Spanish nationalization, the period of strengthening of peripheral nationalisms and the post‐national period. In order to explain…

From ‘socios’ to ‘hyper-consumers’: an empirical examination of the impact of commodification on Spanish football fans

2012

Traditionally, the Spanish game has been analysed in scholarly studies in terms of the effect of crowd violence or the nationalist and regionalist implications of the Spanish clubs. Latterly analysis has also extended to include gender issues (and the process of constructing masculinity, in particular) and a spate of studies dealing with racism and xenophobia, both of which have blighted the Spanish game in recent years. Little attention, however, has been given over to the study of the effects on fans of the rapidly expanding influence of commercialization on football in Spain. With this gap in mind, this study sets out to examine, from an empirical perspective, the social consequences of …

Cosmopolitan internationalism: UNESCO’s ideological ambiguity and the difference/diversity problematic

2022

This article addresses the ways in which UNESCO’s ideological engagements are negotiated in the difference/diversity discourse as they are transferred from the international standard-setting level to the national and local contexts. It proposes the discursive construction of cosmopolitan internationalism as a framework for analysing the intersections of difference, located in the practicalities of internationalism, and diversity, tied to the ideals of cosmopolitanism, as they are manifested at the level of both the implementation of UNESCO’s Diversity Convention and urban policy making in the city of Sydney. The analysis suggests that ruptures challenging the homogenising diversity discours…

Hizballāh and Lebanese Nationalism: The muqāwamah Proposal, Limits and Perimeters

2018

Abstract In this paper, an attempt was made to understand whether the ideological proposal of the muqāwamah (Islamic resistance), advanced by Ḥizballāh from 1982 until the present day, can be considered as a national value that is valid not only for the Shia community, but also for other communities, such as Christian or Sunni.
