In this paper, we describe the trial of a learning unit on the Special Relativity topic based on Minkowski's approach through spacetime diagrams, following the results in pedagogical researches in this field. The purported effects of "circulation-improving" herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) show striking similarities with the vascular actions of nitric oxide (NO) produced by the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). We have previously reported that Salviae miltiorrhizae radix and Zizyphi spinosae semen upregulate eNOS expression. In the present study, we studied the effect on eNOS gene expression of 15 Chinese herbs with potential effects on the vasculature, and identified Prunella vulgaris L. Null Space Based Image Recognition Using Incremental Eigendecomposition

An incremental approach to the discriminative common vector (DCV) method for image recognition is considered. Discriminative projections are tackled in the particular context in which new training data becomes available and learned subspaces may need continuous updating. Starting from incremental eigendecomposition of scatter matrices, an efficient updating rule based on projections and orthogonalization is given. The corresponding algorithm has been empirically assessed and compared to its batch counterpart. The same good properties and performance results of the original method are kept but with a dramatic decrease in the computation needed.

Transaction Costs and Returns to a Trading Strategy

This chapter starts with a review of transaction costs in capital markets. Then it demonstrates how to simulate the returns to a moving average trading strategy in the presence of transaction costs. The following two cases are considered when a trading indicator generates a sell signal: case one where the trader switches to cash, and case two where the trader alternatively sells short a financial asset.

AbstractThe human neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS1) gene is subject to extensive splicing. A total of 12 NOS1 mRNA species have been identified. They differ in their 5′ ends and are derived from 12 different first exons (termed exons 1a to 1l). Various cell lines whose NOS1 first exon expression patterns were representative of human brain, skin, and skeletal muscle were identified. These included A673 neuroepithelioma cells, SK-N-MC neuroblastoma cells, HaCaT keratinocyte-like cells, and C2C12 myocyte-like cells. In these cell lines, correlations were found between the exon 1 variants preferentially expressed and the promoter activities of their cognate 5′ flanking sequences. These data…
