Phytochemical Analysis and Cytotoxicity Towards Multidrug-Resistant Leukemia Cells of Essential Oils Derived from Lebanese Medicinal Plants

Juniperus excelsa fruit essential oil as well as J. oxycedrus, Cedrus libani, and Pinus pinea wood essential oils have been obtained with yields between 2.2 ± 0.3 % to 3.4 ± 0.5 % and analyzed by gas chromatography. Sesquiterpenes mainly characterized C. libani and J. oxycedrus essential oils, while in P. pinea and J. excelsa, monoterpenes were the most abundant compounds. In J. oxycedrus, cis-calamenene (7.8 %), cuparene (3.8 %), and cis-thujopsenal (2.0 %) have been detected for the first time. Abstract Transport and deposition of copper in the Earth's crust are mainly controlled by the solubility of Cu-bearing phases and the speciation of Cu in magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. To improve our understanding of copper mobilization by hydrothermal fluids, we conducted an experimental study on the interaction between Cu-bearing phases (metallic copper, Cu2O, CuCl) and aqueous chloride solutions (H2O ± NaCl ± HCl; with Cl concentrations of 0 to 4.3 mol kg-1). Miltirone (1) is a diterpene quinone extracted from a well-known Chinese traditional herb (Salvia miltiorrhiza). We investigated the cytotoxic effects of miltirone toward sensitive and multidrug-resistant acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell lines. Miltirone inhibited multidrug-resistant P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-overexpressing CEM/ADR5000 cells better than drug-sensitive CCRF-CEM wild-type cells, a phenomenon termed collateral sensitivity. Abstract Background The paucity of effective treatment in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) encouraged us to investigate the therapeutic value of artesunate (ART) promised by its inhibitory effect against various tumors and broad safety profile. Methods We evaluated the impact of ART on three NET cell lines, BON-1, QGP-1 and NCI-H727 on cellular and molecular levels. Results Our results showed that ART induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through phosphorylation of eIF2α, which further gave rise to autophagy in all three NET cell lines. The Myc promoter-binding protein-1 (MBP-1) is a 37-38 kDa protein that binds to the c-myc P2 promoter and negatively regulates transcription of the protooncogene. MBP-1 cDNA shares 97% similarity with the cDNA encoding the glycolytic enzyme alpha-enolase and both genes have been mapped to the same region of human chromosome 1, suggesting the hypothesis that the two proteins might be encoded by the same gene. We show here data indicating that a 37 kDa protein is alternatively translated from the full-length alpha-enolase mRNA. Simian herpes B virus (SHBV) is the herpes simplex virus (HSV) homologue for the species MACACA: Unlike in its natural host, and unlike other animal herpesviruses, SHBV causes high mortality in accidentally infected humans. In this study, the interference of T-DNA insertion upon Agrobacterium-mediated transformation on the biochemical expression of the host genome is discussed. Plant extracts of transgenic Artemisia annua L. with or without an overexpressed farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase gene have been investigated for their bioactivity and metabolic profile in comparison with wild type A. annua. The highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans was observed in the T253 transgenic lines. Proteins featuring scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) domains are prominent receptors known from vertebrates and from one phylum of invertebrates, the echinoderms. In the present study we report the first putative SRCR protein from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium (Porifera), a member of the lowest phylum of contemporary Metazoans. Two forms of SRCR molecules were characterized, which apparently represent alternative splicing of the same transcript. The long putative SRCR protein, of 1536 aa, features twelve SRCR repeats, a C-terminal transmembrane domain and a cytoplasmic tail. In a project designed to investigate the specific and infraspecific taxa of Matthiola endemic to Sicily (Italy) as new potential sources of bioactive compounds in this work, the infraspecific taxa of Matthiola fruticulosa were studied, namely, subsp. fruticulosa and subsp. coronopifolia.
