Ozone therapy can be considered as an integrative therapy in oncology? [abstract]

2019

BACKGROUND: Our group in Policlinic Umberto I - University Hospital of Sapienza Rome - has decided to further investigate if Ozone therapy can be of support in oncology.
In literature it has been reported that ozone applications in oncology or in cancer cells is associated with: high efficiency in preventing chemotherapy complications (nausea, vomiting, opportunistic infections, asthenia) as well as confining or restricting the expansion of tumours.(1-5)

PURPOSE: The aim of our study in to evaluate and eventually confirm the validity of ozone treatments in order to consider such procedures as a possible and concrete support therapy for oncology patients undertaking chemot…

Chemotherapy in advanced pancreatic cancer

1997

Patients with advanced adenocarcinomas of the pancreas have an exceptionally poor prognosis. Modest activity has been demonstrated with single agents (response rates of 25% at best with 5-fluorouracil [5-FU] and mitomycin). Better results have not been obtained by combination chemotherapy. Improvements in the palliation have been achieved by treatment with 5-FU, folinic acid (FA), and interferon-alpha-2A (IFN-alpha) weekly in the context of a phase II trial. Of 57 evaluable patients, eight (14%) had a partial response (PR), eight (14%) a minor response (MR), and 28 (49%) had no change of disease (NC). The median survival time was 10 mo for patients with progressive disease. Twenty-two out o…

PD-0024 Phase I/II Study of Folfiri Plus the MEK1/2 Inhibitor Pimasertib (MSC1936369B) as Second-Line Treatment for KRAS Mutated Metastatic Colorecta…

2012

ABSTRACT Introduction Pimasertib is a highly selective inhibitor of the MEK1/2 kinases of the MAPK pathway. It demonstrates potent antitumor activity in cell lines and xenograft models with activating (mainly BRAF and KRAS) mutations. A two-part study, comprising a safety run-in part followed by a randomized phase II part, was designed to investigate FOLFIRI plus pimasertib as second-line treatment for patients with KRAS mutated (mt) metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The results of the safety run-in part, conducted primarily to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and the recommended phase II dose (RP2D), are reported here. Methods Patients with KRAS mt mCRC progressing on first-li…

Burkitt’s lymphoma in pregnant woman: Difficult management of a rare case

2020

Highlights • Burkitt’s lymphoma, an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma, is extremely rare during pregnancy. • Lymphoma of the small intestine is often overlooked in the early stages of the disease. • We described a multidisciplinary approach, cesarean section with surgical intestinal exploration.

Withdrawal symptoms after discontinuation of antidepressants are common and have long been known. Typical symptoms after dose reduction or discontinuation of antidepressants are dizziness, drowsiness, headache, flu-like symptoms, hyperarousal, imbalance, insomnia, irritability, and nausea. Rebound, relapse, or recurrence associated with the underlying mental disorder may also occur. The occurrence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) following abrupt discontinuation of antidepressants have not yet been reported. Here we report the development of OCS (obsessional suicidal thoughts) in a patient with major depressive disorder and absence of a previous obsessive-compulsive disorder following…

A case of severe repeated immunological reactions to intermittent rifampicin treatment

1972

A case is reported in which a 36-year-old patient twice suffered a rapidly-developing severe reaction to intermittent rifampicin therapy. The symptoms were upper abdominal and back pain, nausea and shivering. Acute renal failure, thrombocytopenia, jaundice and haemolytic anaemia also developed. Aetiologically this was due to an immunopathological effect. This case was unusual in that all the previously observed reactions to rifampicin of an immunological aetiology occurred together, resulting in a marked leucocytosis with the presence of immature cells. It appears that the immediate administration of high-dose corticosteroids can favourably influence this condition. We consider that despite…

Iron Fortification of Milk and Dairy Products

2013

Blood haemoglobin level is used to define anaemia. Thresholds are given by category of age, of sex, and also of physiological status such as pregnancy. For example, the threshold is 120 g L–1 of haemoglobin in blood for a nonpregnant adult woman, 110 for a pregnant woman, 130 for a man older than 15 years, 110 for a child under 5 years… Iron deficiency constitutes the most important worldwide problem of human nutrition. In 2005, 1.62 billions of people were concerned by iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is encountered mostly in poor countries and particularly in Western Pacific, except Australia and New Zealand, in India and Pakistan, in the great majority of countries in Africa, in South Am…

Rotavirus stimulates release of serotonin (5-HT) from human enterochromaffin cells and activates brain structures involved in nausea and vomiting

2011

Rotavirus (RV) is the major cause of severe gastroenteritis in young children. A virus-encoded enterotoxin, NSP4 is proposed to play a major role in causing RV diarrhoea but how RV can induce emesis, a hallmark of the illness, remains unresolved. In this study we have addressed the hypothesis that RV-induced secretion of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) by enterochromaffin (EC) cells plays a key role in the emetic reflex during RV infection resulting in activation of vagal afferent nerves connected to nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and area postrema in the brain stem, structures associated with nausea and vomiting. Our experiments revealed that RV can infect and replicate in human…
