The Migration Crisis: An Introduction
2020
In 2015, the EU and its member states struggled to coordinate, communicate, and cooperate on the migration crisis as the chapters in this section show. Schilde and Wallace Goodman point out that while border security contains examples of deeper integration, asylum management policy has followed the scenarios of breaking down and muddling through. All the authors highlight the Dublin convention as particularly ill-devised and thus paving the way for the refugee crisis. Bosilca finds evidence for breaking down in addition to minimal reforms of border security policy that constitute muddling through. Crawford argues that the migration crisis provides evidence both of muddling through and headi…
A cultural heritage experience for visually impaired people
2020
Abstract In recent years, we have assisted to an impressive advance of computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Among the many applications of computer vision, in this paper we investigate on the potential impact for enhancing the cultural and physical accessibility of cultural heritage sites. By using a common smartphone as a mediation instrument with the environment, we demonstrate how convolutional networks can be trained for recognizing monuments in the surroundings of the users, thus enabling the possibility of accessing contents associated to the monument itself, or new forms of fruition for visually impaired people. Moreover, computer vision …
An empirically grounded agent based model for modeling directs, conflict detection and resolution operations in air traffic management
2017
We present an agent based model of the Air Traffic Management socio-technical complex system that aims at modeling the interactions between aircrafts and air traffic controllers at a tactical level. The core of the model is given by the conflict detection and resolution module and by the directs module. Directs are flight shortcuts that are given by air controllers to speed up the passage of an aircraft within a certain airspace and therefore to facilitate airline operations. Conflicts resolution between flight trajectories can arise during the en-route phase of each flight due to both not detailed flight trajectory planning or unforeseen events that perturb the planned flight plan. Our mod…
Effects of several degrees of chronic social defeat stress on emotional and spatial memory in CD1 mice
2015
In the present study, the effects of several degrees of CSDS (Chronic Social Defeat Stress) on emotional and spatial memory in mice were evaluated in separate experiments. Male CD1 mice were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (n=10-12) for each experiment: NS (non-stressed), S5, S10 and S20 (5, 10 and 20 sessions of CSDS, respectively). The S groups underwent the corresponding number of agonistic encounters (10min each) over a 20-day period. 24h after the last session of CSDS, mice performed the inhibitory avoidance (Experiment 1) or the Morris water maze test (Experiment 2). In both experiments, animals were also evaluated in the elevated plus maze for 5min to obtain complementa…
Studies on a new potential dopaminergic agent: in vitro BBB permeability, in vivo behavioural effects and molecular docking evaluation.
2015
2-Amino-N-[2-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-ethyl]-3-phenyl-propionamide (DA-PHEN) has been previously synthesized to obtain a potential prodrug capable of release dopamine (DA) into CNS. However, DA-PHEN could act per se as a dopaminergic drug. In this study, the permeability transport (Pe), obtained by parallel artificial permeability assay (PAMPA), indicated a low passive transcellular transport (Pe = 0.32 ± 0.01 × 10(-6 )cm/s). Using the Caco-2 cell system, the Papp AP-BL in absorptive direction (3.36 ± 0.02 × 10(-5 )cm/s) was significantly higher than the Papp BL-AP in secretive direction (1.75 ± 0.07 × 10(-5 )cm/s), suggesting a polarized transport. The efflux ratio (Papp AP-BL/Papp BL-AP = 0…
A Math E-Learning Course to Improve Pupils’ Performances
2013
This chapter presents an e-learning teaching/learning activity to support the traditional activities at school. It was developed as a part of a P.O.R. project (Piano Operativo Regionale) of the Regione Sicilia for the Mathematics subject. The experiment was conducted at Libero Grassi school (Istituto Tecnico Commerciale Statale) in Palermo, Italy. The designated e-learning platform is the open source system, Moodle. The main purpose of the formative activity is to reduce students’ educational gap, which may generate “educational debits” at the end of the school year. If the students do not overcome these debits, they are not admitted to the next year. This activity took place during the sec…
Early handling effect on female rat spatial and non-spatial learning and memory
2014
This study aims at providing an insight into early handling procedures on learning and memory performance in adult female rats. Early handling procedures were started on post-natal day 2 until 21, and consisted in 15 min, daily separations of the dams from their litters. Assessment of declarative memory was carried out in the novel-object recognition task; spatial learning, reference- and working memory were evaluated in the Morris water maze (MWM). Our results indicate that early handling induced an enhancement in: (1) declarative memory, in the object recognition task, both at 1h and 24h intervals; (2) reference memory in the probe test and working memory and behavioral flexibility in the…
Postgraduate level analog microelectronics course based on cadence IC software and AMS 0.35 µm technology
2021
An analog microelectronics design course at the post-graduate level is described in this paper. In 30 h, students with different engineering background receive a basic but solid formation by implementing a complete microelectronics design flow, following current industry standards. The course deals with fundamental design blocks as well as specific computer aided design tools. This course can be taught, as it is, as a fundamental module in general electronics/communications masters, but it can be also tuned to match specific curriculum constraints, if required. It has been successfully taught for two years, with minor adjustments, within the Telecommunications Engineering Master, at the Un…
Mitigating deficiencies of generation Z through new educational methodologies in a business statistic course
2020
[EN] Nowadays, most of the students in first course at University are from the socalled Generation Z. Since a young age, these students have been used digital technology such as internet, mobile phones, tablets and laptops developing certain skills. But a large majority of these students have some deficiencies such as low knowledge of mathematics, scarce levels of motivation, concentration or logical reasoning and little patience (they want to understand everything quickly). These characteristics must be improved being a hard work to do by teachers. New educational methodologies are being adapted taking into account these digital skills and mitigating the deficiencies observed in some stude…
