Phytosociology of Quercus cerris and Ilex aquifolium woodlands in Sicily. – A vegetation survey on Quercus cerris and Ilex aquifolium woods occurring on northern side of Nebrodi Mountains, in Sicily, is presented. On phytosociolgical analyses, these fitocoenoses have been attributed to the new association Ilici aquifolii-Quercetum cerridis, within the order Doronico orientalis-Fagion sylvaticae, vicarious of Ilici-Quercetum austrothyrrenicae described from the Madonie Mountains.

La Sicilia un poco araba e molto bizantina del Val Demone, che nessuno ha davvero mai domato, nel fitto dei suoi boschi nasconde cenobi, romitaggi, monasteri, e, sulle balze più esposte al sole, una miriade di piccoli centri abitati che vissero della economia del bosco, degli usi civici, delle molteplici declinazioni dell’artigianato, producendo anche una propria cultura artistica, locale, ma non per conto proprio. L'articolo cerca, nella parte finale, di intravedere le prospettive evolutive dell'architettura in quest'area, una terra severa dove la natura incalza e rende sempre precarie le opere dell'uomo.
First record of Carex vesicaria (Cyperaceae) in Sicily.

The first record of Carex vesicaria from Sicily is reported. This circumboreal species, so far known from the peninsular regions of Italy and from Corsica, has been found in a marshy mead- ow within the Fagus sylvatica and Acer pseudoplatanus woody belt of the Nebrodi mountains (N-E Sicily). The phytocoenosis established in this locality is characterized by C. vesicaria itself together with a few other hygrophytes such as Galium elongatum, Mentha aquatica and Juncus effusus. Differences of raw cork quality in productive cork oak woods in Sicily in relation to stand density

Differences of raw cork quality, in terms of thickness and porosity, were observed in productive cork oak (Quercus suber L.) stands in the Nebrodi and Iblei mountains of Sicily in relation to stand density. Five study areas were chosen across a range of different stand density satisfying specific sampling requirements among two managed cork oak stands. Analysis of variance using Fisher-Snedecor's F test (p<0,05) were used to identify statistically significant differences of cork quality and sylvicultural, dendrometric and cork stripping parameters between study areas within each stand and also between stands.
