The role of physical activity in the link between menopausal status and mental well-being
2020
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between menopausal status and mental well-being, and whether this relationship varies as a function of physical activity (PA). METHODS Based on a hormonal analysis and bleeding diary, women aged 47 to 55 were categorized as pre (n = 304), early peri (n = 198), late peri (n = 209), or postmenopausal (n = 387). Mental well-being was assessed using the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short Form, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. PA was self-reported and categorized as low, medium, and high. Associations between variables were analyzed using multivariate linear regression adjuste…
The mediating role of optimism in the relations between sense of coherence, subjective and psychological well-being among late adolescents
2015
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine whether optimism is a mediator between sense of coherence, subjective well-being and psychological well-being among late adolescents. Two hundred and eleven participants completed the Sense of Coherence Scale, the Life Orientation Test-Revised, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Results of path analysis revealed both direct and indirect effects of sense of coherence on subjective and psychological well-being measures, suggesting that optimism served as a partial mediator. The mediating role of optimism may be more fully understood within the framework of the se…
Happiness in Physical Activity: A Longitudinal Examination of Children Motivation and Negative Affect in Physical Activity
2020
Physical activity has beneficial effects on health and is extremely recommended for children's well-being. Understanding risk factors that could cause negative affect in children practicing physical activity is hugely relevant, and there is a growing consensus that autonomous and controlled motivation in the self-determination theory (SDT) framework could offer a broader perspective. Consequently, this study aims to examine the longitudinal relations between autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and negative affect in physical activity, using a sample of children that regularly participate in physical activity. One hundred forty children in the range age between 7 and 11 (M = 8.45, …
Sharing experienced sadness : Negotiating meanings of self-defined sad music within a group interview session
2016
Sadness induced by music listening has been a popular research focus in music and emotion research. Despite the wide consensus in affective sciences that emotional experiences are social processes, previous studies have only concentrated on individuals. Thus, the intersubjective dimension of musical experience – how music and music-related emotions are experienced between individuals – has not been investigated. In order to tap into shared emotional experiences, group discussions about experiences evoked by sad music were facilitated. Interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed four levels of discourses in the sharing of experiences evoked by joint music listening: (1) describing the…
Development of Burnout Syndrome in Non-university Teachers: Influence of Demand and Resource Variables.
2021
Psychosocial risks at work are an important occupational problem since they can have an impact on workers' health, productivity, absenteeism, and company profits. Among their consequences, burnout stands out for its prevalence and associated consequences. This problem is particularly noteworthy in the case of teachers. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of some psychosocial factors (demand and resource variables) and risks in burnout development, taking into consideration the levels of burnout according to the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI). This paper contributes to advancing knowledge on this issue by analyzing the influence of work characteristics and personal characteris…
Clinical profile associated with HIV risk in Spanish youth
2018
Heterosexual transmission is the second route of new HIV infection diagnoses in Spain. A high percentage of young people use condom inconsistently. Beyond cognitive factors, emotional variables seem to be associated with sexual risk behavior. The aim was to examine the differential clinical profile between young people at risk and no-risk for HIV infection. A total of 424 heterosexuals were evaluated (M age =20.62; SD=2.16), and distributed into two groups: risk group (60.7%) and non-risk group (39.3%). They completed the AIDS Prevention Questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, and the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluatio…
Identical fits of nonnegative matrix/tensor factorization may correspond to different extracted event-related potentials
2010
Nonnegative Matrix / Tensor factorization (NMF/NTF) have been used in the study of EEG, and the fit (explained variation) is often used to evaluate the performance of a nonnegative decomposition algorithm. However, this parameter only reveals the information derived from the mathematical model and just exhibits the reliability of the algorithms, and the property of EEG can not be reflected. If fits of two algorithms are identical, it is necessary to examine whether the desired components extracted by them are identical too. In order to verify this doubt, we performed NMF and NTF on the same dataset of an auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), and found that the identical fits of NMF and …
Increasing Stability of EEG Components Extraction Using Sparsity Regularized Tensor Decomposition
2018
Tensor decomposition has been widely employed for EEG signal processing in recent years. Constrained and regularized tensor decomposition often attains more meaningful and interpretable results. In this study, we applied sparse nonnegative CANDECOMP/PARAFAC tensor decomposition to ongoing EEG data under naturalistic music stimulus. Interesting temporal, spectral and spatial components highly related with music features were extracted. We explored the ongoing EEG decomposition results and properties in a wide range of sparsity levels, and proposed a paradigm to select reasonable sparsity regularization parameters. The stability of interesting components extraction from fourteen subjects’ dat…
Extract Mismatch Negativity and P3a through Two-Dimensional Nonnegative Decomposition on Time-Frequency Represented Event-Related Potentials
2010
This study compares the row-wise unfolding nonnegative tensor factorization (NTF) and the standard nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) in extracting time-frequency represented event-related potentials—mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a from EEG under the two-dimensional decomposition The criterion to judge performance of NMF and NTF is based on psychology knowledge of MMN and P3a MMN is elicited by an oddball paradigm and may be proportionally modulated by the attention So, participants are usually instructed to ignore the stimuli However the deviant stimulus inevitably attracts some attention of the participant towards the stimuli Thus, P3a often follows MMN As a result, if P3a was large…
Evaluation of a novel monoclonal antibody against tumor-associated MUC1 for diagnosis and prognosis of breast cancer
2019
There is still a great unmet medical need concerning diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer which could be addressed by utilizing specific molecular targets. Tumor-associated MUC1 is expressed on over 90 % of all breast cancer entities and differs strongly from its physiological form on epithelial cells, therefore presenting a unique target for breast cancer diagnosis and antibody-mediated immune therapy. Utilizing an anti-tumor vaccine based on a synthetically prepared glycopeptide, we generated a monoclonal antibody (mAb) GGSK-1/30, selectively recognizing human tumor-associated MUC1. This antibody targets exclusively tumor-associated MUC1 in the absence of any binding to MUC1 on health…
