Dichroism in VUV photoemission from the (0001)-surfaces of ultrathin Gd and Nd films on W(110)

Abstract Ultrathin layers of Gd and Nd epitaxially grown on W(110) have been investigated using linearly and circularly polarised light at the 6.5 m NIM beamline at the BESSY storage ring in Berlin. The high quality of the films was monitored by the sharp and dispersionless surface state just below the Fermi energy. The CDAD (circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons) measurements showed strong effects in the surface states as well as in the valence bands. We present investigations of the electronic and magnetic structure of the Rare Earth valence states. In particular, we have examined ultra thin films (≤ 10 ML) of the rare earth metals gadolinium and neodymium epitaxially grown on tungsten (110). Various experiments on dichroism in angular resolved photoemission have been performed using circularly as well as linearly polarised light in the VUV-range with photon energies below 40 eV. A special emphasis was placed on the investigation of the surface state, which was observed for both Gd and Nd. X-ray-absorption spectroscopy ofNd3+-exchanged β-alumina crystal

The results of x-ray-absorption spectroscopy investigations of ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ ions in a nearly fully exchanged (93%) sodium \ensuremath{\beta}-alumina crystal are reported. The ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ local environment is reconstructed using a multishell best fit procedure and is compared with existing structural models. The experimental extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectra are also compared with model ab initio FEFF6 calculations based on the x-ray-diffraction data for the ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ ions located at the BR(2d) and interstitial A(6h) sites of \ensuremath{\beta}-alumina. Fabrication and Characterisation of Reverse Proton Exchange Optical Waveguides in Neodymium Doped Lithium Niobate Crystals

In this work, the complete fabrication process which combines Proton Exchange (PE) and Reverse Proton Exchange (RPE) in Neodymium doped LiNbO3 channel waveguides is reported. To produce the PE-RPE channel waveguides the fabrication of dielectric SiO2 masks had to be implemented. For this propose, we adopted a technique based on the Ion Plating Plasma Assisted Deposition of SiO2 followed by the standard ultraviolet photolithographic patterning. On the other hand, we determined the main optical and spectroscopic properties of Nd3+ ions in the channel waveguides including the study of the lifetime as function as the polarisation.
Adoption of bonded magnets in place of sintered NdFeB: Performance and economic considerations on a small power generator

Bonded magnets are giving promising results when adopted to replace expensive rare earth magnets. The possibility to “modulate” the magnetic characteristics by varying the binder percentage allows the opening of new lines of investigation and to face the problem of rare earths cost. In the paper a small power generator prototype has been equipped with bonded magnets realized in the Authors' Laboratories; it has been tested and compared with the original generator mounting NdFeB sintered magnets. FEM simulations are validated by means of experimental tests. Economic comparisons are proposed.
Production and Radiochemical Separation of the Auger Electron Emitter140Nd

Among the Auger electron emitters, the radiolanthanide 140Nd has some unique nuclear properties with potential for endoradiotherapeutic applications. In the present study, 140Nd was produced via the 140Ce(3He,3n) nuclear process at the FZ Julich CV28 cyclotron, irradiating CeO2 with 3He particles of 36 MeV primary energy. Yields of about 5 MBq 140Nd per microAh were experimentally obtained. Batch yields of > 100 MBq 140Nd were reached. 140Nd was separated in 75 +/- 5% radiochemical yield using a two-step process, first by extracting the bulk of the target material according to a Ce(IV)/Nd(III) separation, then by final ion exchange purification.
Two pyrazolylborate dysprosium(III) and neodymium(III) single ion magnets modeled by a Radial Effective Charge approach

Abstract A Radial Effective Charge model based on a point charge approach is applied in order to study the magnetic behavior of two lanthanoid single ion magnets coordinated by pyrazole-based ligands that produce a D3h crystal field. We obtain the lowest-lying magnetic levels and the associated wave functions of Dy(H2BPzMe22)3 (1), and the tricapped NdTp3 (2), where H2BPzMe22 = dihydrobis(dimenthylpyrazolyl)borate and Tp = trispyrazolylborate. Results support the observed SMM behavior.

The recovery and separation of rare earth elements (REEs) are of national importance owing to the specific usages, high demand, and low supply of these elements. In this research, we have investigated the adsorption of rare earth elements onto DNA-functionalized mesoporous carbons with a BET surface area of 605 m2/g and a median mesopore width of 48 A. Three types of single-stranded DNA, one with 100 base units of thymine, another with 20 units of thymine, and the third, a 2000 unit long DNA from salmon milt were grafted on the carboxylated mesoporous carbon surface. Time resolved confocal luminescence investigations on reverse proton exchange Nd : LiNbO3 channel waveguides

In this work we report on the time and spatial resolved fluorescence of Neodymium ions in LiNbO(3) channel waveguides fabricated by Reverse Proton Exchange. The analysis of the fluorescence decay curves obtained with a sub-micrometric resolution has evidenced the presence of a relevant fluorescence quenching inside the channel waveguide. From the comparison between diffusion simulations and the spatial dependence of the (4)F(3/2) fluorescence decay rate we have concluded that the observed fluorescence quenching can be unequivocally related to the presence of H+ ions in the LiNbO(3) lattice. Observability of the Risken–Nummedal–Graham–Haken instability in Nd:YAG lasers

Multilongitudinal mode instability in ring Nd:YAG lasers is theoretically analyzed. After we review the way in which the standard two-level laser theory applies to this laser we extend the theoretical treatment to include transverse effects. We do this by taking into account the finite transverse section of the active medium and by assuming a Gaussian transverse distribution for the intracavity field. Finally we demonstrate that multimode emission develops whenever the intracavity field waist diameter is almost equal to the active rod diameter.
