Background: Spinal epidural abscesses are rare and are misdiagnosed in up to 75% of cases. Fever, back pain, and neurological deficits are part of the classical triad. Here, the authors report a patient with a L2–L5 spinal epidural abscess with the left paravertebral extension attributed to acute pyelonephritis. Anti-C1q Autoantibodies in Lupus Nephritis: Prevalence and Clinical Significance

Recently, anti-C1q autoantibodies have been proposed as a useful marker in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) since their occurrence correlates with renal involvement and, possibly, with nephritic activity. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anti-C1q antibodies in patients with SLE, with and without renal involvement, and to correlate these markers' presence and levels with the activity of the disease and nephropathy. Recently oxacyclododecindione (Oxa), a macrocyclic lactone isolated from the imperfect fungus Exserohilum rostratum, has been described as a potent transcription inhibitor of inducible proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in cell culture models. As kidney disease in systemic lupus erythematosus is characterized by aberrant expression of inflammatory mediators and infiltration of immune cells, we investigated the effect of Oxa in MRL-Fas(lpr) mice, a model of systemic lupus erythematosus. Kynurenine and Neopterin in Chronic Glomerulonephritis

The results of our clinical observations of 102 patients with chronic glomerulonephritis with normal renal function have shown that hyperkynureninemia in 22,5% of patients develops in cases of pyridoxal-5-phosphate deficiency (hyperkynureninemia after peroral L-tryptophan load), but in 14,8% of patients through the stimulation of the cellular immune system (hyperkynureninemia at fasting state, increase of serum neopterin concentration). Severe intra-abdominal infection commonly requires intensive care. Mortality is high and is mainly determined by disease-specific characteristics, i.e. setting of infection onset, anatomical barrier disruption, and severity of disease expression. Recent observations revealed that antimicrobial resistance appears equally common in community-acquired and late-onset hospital-acquired infection. BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection is the most common health problem affecting millions of people each year, mainly caused by a large genetically heterogeneous group of Escherichia coli called uropathogenic E. coli This study investigates the genotypic analysis of E. coli strains isolated from patients with cystitis and pyelonephritis. Morbus Fabry, Glomerulonephritis mit Halbmondbildung und granulomat�se interstitielle Nephritis

Eine 26-jahrige Patientin wurde unter der Diagnose "Fieber unbekannter Ursache" und Nierenversagen aufgenommen. Mittels Nierenbiopsie, einschlieslich histologischer, immunhistochemischer und elektronenmikroskopischer Verfahren wurden neben einem Morbus Fabry, eine extrakapillar-proliferative Glomerulonephritis (mit Halbmondbildung) und granulomatose interstitielle Nephritis diagnostiziert. Der Bruder der Patientin hatte vor Jahren eine Nierenbiopsie mit der Diagnose einer metabolischen Storung. Die Nachbeurteilung dieser Nierenbiopsie zeigte auch hier Nierenveranderungen im Rahmen eines Morbus Fabry, wobei assoziiert eine tubulointerstitielle Nephritis vorlag.
