Small renal tumors: correlation of clinical and pathological features with tumor size.

2007

We analyzed the association between tumor diameter and pathological stage, histological subtype, tumor grade and the incidence of metastases in renal cell carcinoma with a diameter of up to 4 cm (clinical stage T1a).We analyzed a consecutive series of 663 patients with renal tumors 4 cm or less who underwent surgery at our institution between 1990 and 2006. After excluding 115 patients (17.3%) with benign tumors 548 with renal cell carcinoma were included in the study. Tumor size on preoperative imaging was correlated with pathological stage, tumor grade, histological subtype and incidence of metastases at diagnosis. For data analysis tumors were stratified by tumor diameter into 3 groups, …

Association between biomarkers of inflammation and left ventricular hypertrophy in moderate chronic kidney disease.

2007

Aims: Left ventricular hyper- trophy (LVH) is a predictor for cardiovascu- lar mortality, and it is considered to be a surro- gate marker of preclinical cardiovascular dis- ease. This study aimed at evaluating whether fetuin-A plasma levels are decreased in pa- tients with moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their linkage to plasma concentra- tions of hs-C-reactive protein (CRP), cardio- trophyn-1 (CT-1), tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-), propeptide of collagen Type I (PIP) and to LVH. Material and methods: We enrolled 64 moderate CKD and 55 essential hypertensives (EH) with normal renal func- tion as controls. All the patients underwent an echocardiographic examination; plasma sam- ples…

Choosing the nephrostomy size after percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

2011

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of nephrostomy tube size on perioperative outcomes of percutaneous nephrolithtotmy (PCNL). Methods: Forty-five well-matched patients with normal renal function were prospectively divided in two nonrandomized groups after uneventful PCNL (to receive either a 22-Fr, group 1 (n = 24 pts), or a 12-Fr nephrostomy tube, group 2 (n = 21 pts)). In all a balloon nephrostomy catheter with detachable funnel (Rüsch Teleflex, Germany) was used. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for measuring the pain was administered 8 and 24 h after the procedure. Postoperative analgesics use (Ketoralac Tromethamine 30 mg), pre- and postoperative Hb, renal function and urinary leaks were reg…

Randomized Comparative Trial with Ceftizoxime and Cefotaxime in Urinary Tract Infections

1984

Ceftizoxime, a new, semisynthetic, beta-lactamase-resistant cephalosporin, is not metabolized in man and is excreted almost entirely as the original active compound in the urine. The efficacy and safety of ceftizoxime were assessed in 80 patients with acute and chronic urinary infections, with and without associated pathological conditions, in comparison with cefotaxime. Two dosage schedules, 1 g or 0.5 g every 12 h, i.v. or i.m. for 10 days, were adopted according to the severity of each case and to separate randomization tables for each schedule; causal agents were all sensitive to both drugs in vitro. The overall results were excellent. Safety was excellent in almost all cases. In this t…

Association of uric acid with kidney function and albuminuria: the Uric Acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project

2021

Abstract Background Hyperuricemia is commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, a better understanding of the relationship among uric acid (UA) values, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and albuminuria may shed light on the mechanisms underlying the excess of cardiovascular mortality associated with both chronic kidney disease and hyperuricemia and lead to better risk stratification. Our main goal was to study the relationships between serum uric acid and kidney disease measures (namely estimated GFR [eGFR] and albuminuria) in a large cohort of individuals at cardiovascular risk from the URic acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project database. Methods Clinica…

Vascular complications following bladder drained, simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation: the University of Miami experience

2000

Vascular complications remain a significant nonimmunologic source of pancreas allograft loss. From February 1993 through January 1998, we performed 98 simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantations (SPK) using pancreatic exocrine bladder drainage in patients with type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal disease. They originally received quadruple immunosuppression, and since May 1997 triple immunosuppression protocol (tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroids). The patients' mean age was 37 years (range 24-53 years), including 50 women and 48 men with a mean follow-up of 42 months. The overall rate of vascular complications was 6% (5 patients). The vascular compli…

Penile dermal flap in patients with Peyronie's disease: long-term results.

2010

Purpose: In 1995 a penile dermal flap was described as an ideal operation for penile curvature due to Peyronie's disease. We report our experience with penile dermal flaps in patients with penile curvature due to Peyronie's disease. Materials and Methods: Between January 2001 and May 2004, 26 potent white men with Peyronie's disease underwent corporoplasty with a penile dermal flap. They were evaluated at 3, 6 and 12 months, and yearly thereafter by determination of penile length changes and residual curvature, and the International Index of Erectile Function-5. Results: At the maximum followup (mean 95 months, range 81 to 108) 22 of 26 patients (85%) were available for examination, of whom…

Nephron sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma with normal contralateral kidney: 25 years of experience.

2006

We report the long-term results of our consecutive series of 504 patients who underwent NSS for cancer suspicious, solid renal tumors in the presence of a normal opposite kidney at our institution since 1979.A total of 715 patients underwent NSS since 1969, including 504 for an elective indication, that is with a normal opposite kidney. Of these patients 381 (75.6%) had RCC, 123 (24.4%) had cancer suspicious benign lesions, including 53 (10.5%) with oncocytoma, 33 (6.5%) with angiomyo(lipo)ma, 23 (4.6%) with a complicated cyst and 13 (2.8%) with other benign lesions. Of the 381 patients with RCC 283 (74.3%) had clear cell, 68 (17.8%) had papillary and 30 (7.9%) had chromophobic RCC. Mean tu…

Tubular markers do not predict the decline in glomerular filtration rate in type 1 diabetic patients with overt nephropathy.

2011

Recent studies have shown that both glomerular and tubulointerstitial damage are important factors in the pathophysiology and progression of diabetic nephropathy. To examine whether markers of tubular damage are useful in monitoring the progression of disease, we measured urinary levels of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), liver-fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP), and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) in a 3-year intervention study of 63 type 1 diabetic patients with kidney disease. The baseline mean glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was 87 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) and urinary albumin excretion 1141 mg/24 h. Patients with the highest compared with the lowest quartile of urinary N…
