Desensitization is a property of the cholinergic binding region of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, not of the receptor-integral ion channel
1991
AbstractThe reversible acetylcholine esterase inhibitor (−)-physostigmine (eserine) is the prototype of a new class of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) activating ligands: it induces cation fluxes into nAChR-rich membrane vesicles from Torpedo marmorala electric tissue even under conditions of antagonist blocked acetylcholine binding sites (Okonjo, Kuhlmann, Maclicke, Neuron, in press). This suggests that eserine exerts its channel-activating property via binding sites at the nAChR separate from those of the natural transmitter. We now report that eserine can activate the channel even when the receptor has been preincubated (desensitized) with elevated concentrations of acetylcholin…
Nonresistive dissipative magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation in the 14-moment approximation
2018
We derive the equations of motion of relativistic, non-resistive, second-order dissipative magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation using the method of moments. We assume the fluid to be composed of a single type of point-like particles with vanishing dipole moment or spin, so that the fluid has vanishing magnetization and polarization. In a first approximation, we assume the fluid to be non-resistive, which allows to express the electric field in terms of the magnetic field. We derive equations of motion for the irreducible moments of the deviation of the single-particle distribution function from local thermodynamical equilibrium. We analyze the Navier-Stokes limit of these equati…
Efficacy of obidoxime in human organophosphorus poisoning: determination by neuromuscular transmission studies.
1995
Six patients with organophosphorus compound intoxications developed an intermediate syndrome (weakness and fasciculations) and obidoxime was given on eight occasions. The efficacy of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivator was monitored electrophysiologically by neuromuscular transmission studies using single and repetitive nerve stimulation (20 and 50 Hz) and the activity of the serum (butyryl) cholinesterase (ChE). Dramatic electrophysiologic improvement was seen when obidoxime was given early within 12 h in 3 patients, although evidence of AChE inhibition did not subside completely. When administration of obidoxime was delayed 26 h or more after intoxication on five occasions, electr…
The structure of parasite component communities in brackish water fishes of the northeastern Baltic Sea
2001
We used nestedness analysis to seek non-random patterns in the structure of component communities of metazoan parasites collected from 31 sympatric fish species from the northeastern Bothnian Bay, the most oligohaline area of the Baltic Sea. Only 8 marine parasite species were found among the 63 species recorded, although some marine fish species reproduce in the bay and others occasionally visit the area. Marine parasite species can utilize both freshwater and marine fish species as intermediate or final hosts, and marine fish can harbour freshwater parasite species. This exchange of parasite species between marine and freshwater fish has probably resulted from ecological factors acting ov…

Background Therapy for a first primary neoplasm (FPN) in childhood with high doses of ionizing radiation is an established risk factor for second primary neoplasms (SPN). An association between exposure to low doses and childhood cancer is also suggested; however, results are inconsistent. As only subgroups of children with FPNs develop SPNs, an interaction between radiation, genetic, and other risk factors is presumed to influence cancer development. Objective Therefore, the population-based, nested case-control study KiKme aims to identify differences in genetic predisposition and radiation response between childhood cancer survivors with and without SPNs as well as cancer-free controls.…
Effects of thermal treatments on pectinesterase activity determined in blood oranges juices
2005
Abstract The citrus processing industry aims to maintain turbidity and attractive colour of the juice obtained from Sicilian blood oranges. Nevertheless, the presence of pectinesterase (PE, E.C. 3.1.1.11) causes the loss of these peculiar characteristics, due to precipitation of colloids and very fine pieces of pulp in suspension, with negative effects on colour and clarification of the juices. This study compares total PE activity of Sicilian blood oranges ( Sanguinello , Moro , Tarocco ) with the blonde cultivar Navel , checking enzyme stability with various pasteurisation times and temperatures conditions. Decimal reduction time and temperature ( D and z ) as well as the kinetic constant…
Inactivation kinetics of pectin methyl esterase under combined thermal–high pressure treatment in an orange juice–milk beverage
2008
Abstract The inactivation kinetics of PME in an orange juice–milk beverage system treated by thermal (65–80 °C) and combined thermal (25–65 °C)–high pressure (0.1–700 MPa) processes were fitted using a biphasic model. About 6–8% of the initial activity corresponding to the heat and pressure stable fraction was observed. For complete inactivation a treatment at 90 °C, 1 min or 700 MPa at 55 °C for 2 min was necessary showing the protective effect of the orange–milk media. The extent of inactivation was different in the orange matrices showing that PME was more thermostable in the orange juice–milk based beverage system as compared to the purified enzyme in a buffer system. On the other hand,…
Practice-based learning and innovation in nursing homes
2020
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the conditions under which learning and innovation occur within nursing homes by focusing on how the dynamics of the distribution and transformation of ideas and knowledge may be viewed as a prerequisite for innovation in both formal, planned learning situations and informal, everyday practices. Design/methodology/approach Data was produced via fieldwork, which included participant observations, conversations and research interviews with staff and managers at a Norwegian nursing home. The paper is inspired by situated learning theories and communities of practice, as the social context emerges as the site where learning and innovation are cultivated. …
