Serological and virological evidence of non-sexual transmission of human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV8).
2000
To evaluate whether or not human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) can be transmitted through a non-sexual route a serological survey was carried out in a group of 51 catholic nuns. The seroprevalence rate and the geometrical mean antibody titre to anti-latent HHV8 antigen were similar in nuns and in a group of 60 women, matched by age, in the general population (27 vs. 24%; 1028 vs. 1575, respectively). Moreover, by using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR), HHV8 DNA sequences were detected in 7 of 16 (43·8%) saliva and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with classical Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and in 3 out of 7 (42%) AIDS-KS patients. None of 5 HIV positive persons who did not have…
Sensi e senso comune. La sinestesia come struttura basilare del consenso
2013
Aristotle defines synaisthesis as the ability to directly understand the actions and passions of another man. It is formed through shared experience and the exchange of conversations and thoughts (Nicomachean Ethics, 1170b 10-14): thus we will investigate the epistemological status of the rhetorical consent and its philosophical roots. Analyzing synaisthesis we will work from an anthropological point of view rather than a neuropsychological one. We will prove synaisthesis is one of the basic starting points of consent. This Aristotelian notion is the cornerstone of the original inter-subjectivity. It creates space for certainty (according to Vico and Wittgenstein not Descartes). It is also …
Effect of sublethal concentrations of copper sulphate on seabreamSparus auratafingerlings
2007
The gilthead seabream is the most important Mediterranean aquacultured fish species. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether copper sulphate bath treatments used routinely in aquaculture have effects on important physiological functions of early life stages of the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Fingerlings (80-90 days, 0.27 ± 0.06 g) were exposed to copper sulphate baths at 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.5 mg L −1 during 24 h. Effects on the central nervous function were evaluated analysing brain acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE). Oxidative stress was assessed by the quantification of lipid peroxidation (LP). Heat shock proteins (HSP70) were used as a general response to chem…

Modeling accident risk at the road level through zero-inflated negative binomial models: A case study of multiple road networks
2021
Abstract This paper presents a case study carried out in multiple cities of the Valencian Community (Spain) to determine the effect of sociodemographic and road characteristics on traffic accident risk. The analyzes are performed at the road segment level, considering the linear network representing the road structure of each city as a spatial lattice. The number of accidents observed in each road segment from 2010 to 2019 is taken as the response variable, and a zero-inflated modeling approach is considered. Count overdispersion and spatial dependence are also accounted for. Despite the complexity and sparsity of the data, the fitted models performed considerably well, with few exceptions.…
