Comparative chemical composition and bioactivity of leaves essential oils from nine Sicilian accessions of Myrtus communis L.

2019

In this study, the essential oils obtained from the leaves of Myrtus communis L. stored in a collection orchard located at the experimental station ‘Orleans’ of the Department of Agricultural and Forest Sciences of the University of Palermo (Italy) were investigated. The essential oils, analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, revealed the presence of α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, limonene and myrtenyl acetate as dominant constituents. The neuroprotective effects of M. communis essential oils were investigated by analysing the antioxidant properties and cholinesterases (acetylcholinesterase, AChE, and butyrylcholinesterase, BChE) inhibitory activity. Essential oils from Scopello…

2016

The manager as innovator and equilibrist: a qualitative study of the experiences of Norwegian managers in health and welfare service taking part in research partnership with higher educationManagers in health and welfare services have overall responsibility to develop the services according to official regulations and the needs of society. They are expected to provide high quality, research based services. Higher education is expected to transform education and research that improve the services, and to develop research collaborating with the practical field. This study investigates experiences of managers in health and welfare services taking part in research collaboration with higher educ…

Gestures within Human-Technology Choreographies for Interaction Design

2013

In the traditional use-oriented approach, only a fraction of gestures are taken as relevant to interaction. In this paper we argue that gestures should not be handled only as isolated objects of application use, but they should rather be understood as dynamic moments of embodied presence belonging to an experiential chain of different movements which has its own significance as a whole. In the current study, we call the embodied, experiential continuum of human action choreography. We assume that choreography is a fruitful theoretical concept in understanding interaction design because by choreography we can understand gestures as building up a chain of a bigger whole. The dynamic formulati…

Metabolomiikka massaspektrometrialla

2018

Pharmaceuticals in processing of municipal sewage sludge studied by grab and passive sampling

2018

Abstract Concentrations of pharmaceuticals, consisting of four anti-inflammatory and one antiepileptic drug, were studied in the aqueous and solid phase of municipal sewage sludge, collected from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in central Finland. The samples included untreated municipal sludge from the biological wastewater treatment, digested sludge and sludge before and after composting. First, samples were taken as grab samples to study the bioavailable part in aqueous phase but also the part in solid fraction. Later, the long-term concentrations were studied by passive sampling with styrene divinylbenzene-reverse phase sulfonated (SDB-RPS) disks. In the untreated solid sludge, the …

Combined oral prolonged-release oxycodone and naloxone in chronic pain management

2013

Introduction: The use of opioids is associated with unwanted adverse effects, particularly opioid-induced constipation (OIC). The adverse effects of opioids on gastrointestinal function are mediated by the interaction with opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract. The most common drugs used for relieving OIC are laxatives, which do not address the opioid receptor-mediated bowel dysfunction and do not provide sufficient relief. Areas covered: This paper discusses the role of a combination of prolongedrelease formulation of oxycodone (OX) and naloxone (N) in the prevention and management of OIC, reporting efficacy and safety outcome of controlled studies. In a therapeutic area of great …

Effects of steatosis on drug-metabolizing capability of primary human hepatocytes.

2007

Abstract The suitability of liver grafts discarded for transplantation because of macrosteatosis for preparing human hepatocyte cultures for in vitro drug metabolism studies has been examined. Lower cell viability and yield of isolation procedure were obtained from fatty livers (>40% steatosis) with respect to normal tissue. Significant reductions in 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation (ECOD) and testosterone oxidations were found in hepatocytes prepared from steatotic livers. The potential impact of lipid accumulation on P450 enzymes was studied in vitro by incubation of cultured hepatocytes with long chain free fatty acids (FFA). Treatment of cells with 0.25–3 mM FFA induced dose-dependent ac…

Compensatory mechanisms enhance hippocampal acetylcholine release in transgenic mice expressing human acetylcholinesterase

2001

Central cholinergic neurotransmission was studied in learning-impaired transgenic mice expressing human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE-Tg). Total catalytic activity of AChE was approximately twofold higher in synaptosomes from hippocampus, striatum and cortex of hAChE-Tg mice as compared with controls (FVB/N mice). Extracellular acetylcholine (ACh) levels in the hippocampus, monitored by microdialysis in the absence or presence of 10(-8)-10(-3) M neostigmine in the perfusion fluid, were indistinguishable in freely moving control and hAChE-Tg mice. Muscarinic receptor functions were unchanged as indicated by similar effects of scopolamine on ACh release and of carbachol on inositol phosphate fo…

The release of choline from phospholipids mediated by beta-adrenoceptor activation in isolated hearts.

1986

The resting efflux of choline into the perfusate (Tyrode's solution) of isolated hearts was equal to the rate, at which choline was liberated from phospholipid degradation (Lindmar et al. 1986). Infusion of isoprenaline (2 X 10(-7) mol/l), forskolin (1-3 X 10(-6) mol/l) or 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX; 3 X 10(-4) mol/l) for 40 min markedly enhanced the efflux of choline. The increase was linear during the experimental period and, in the case of isoprenaline, was blocked by 3 X 10(-7) mol/l atenolol. In the guinea-pig heart, IBMX at a threshold concentration of 10(-4) mol/l shifted the concentration-response curve for the effect of forskolin on the efflux of choline to the left by one l…

Alterations on AChE Activity of the Fish Anguilla anguilla as Response to Herbicide-Contaminated Water

2000

Abstract The inhibition of both total and specific acetylcholinesterase activities was measured in the whole eyes of the yellow eel Anguilla anguilla after exposure to the carbamate thiobencarb. In vivo assays were conducted under a constant flow-through system of thiobencarb-contaminated water (1/60 LC50 96 h=0.22 ppm for 96 h) followed by a recovery period in clean water (192 h more). The results indicated a measurable level of AChE activity on eyes of control eels, which resulted in a sensitive indicator of the presence of thiobencarb in the water. The pesticide induced significant inhibitory effects on AChE activity ranging from 35% in total AChE activity to 75% in specific AChE activit…
