Subventricular zone neural progenitors protect striatal neurons from glutamatergic excitotoxicity.

2012

The functional significance of adult neural stem and progenitor cells in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory has been well documented. Although adult neural stem and progenitor cells in the subventricular zone are known to migrate to, maintain and reorganize the olfactory bulb, it is less clear whether they are functionally required for other processes. Using a conditional transgenic mouse model, selective ablation of adult neural stem and progenitor cells in the subventricular zone induced a dramatic increase in morbidity and mortality of central nervous system disorders characterized by excitotoxicity-induced cell death accompanied by reactive inflammation, such as 4-aminopyridine-i…

Polysialic acid can mediate membrane interactions by interacting with phospholipids

2009

Polysialic acid (polySia) is expressed on the surface of neural cells, neuroinvasive bacterial cells and several tumor cells. PolySia chains attached to NCAM can influence both trans interactions between membranes of two cells and cis interactions. Here, we report on the involvement of phospholipids in regulation of membrane interactions by polySia. The pH at the surface of liposomes, specific molecular area of phosphatidylcholine molecules, phase transition of DPPC bilayers, cyclic voltammograms of BLMs, and electron micrographs of phosphatidylcholine vesicles were studied after addition of polysialic acid free in solution. The results indicate that polySia chains can associate with phosph…

The expression mechanism of the residual LTP in the CA1 region of BDNF k.o. mice is insensitive to NO synthase inhibition

2011

Abstract BDNF and nitric oxide signaling both contribute to long-term potentiation (LTP) at glutamatergic synapses, but to date, few studies analyzed the interaction of both signaling cascades in the same synaptic pathway. Here we addressed the question whether the residual LTP in the CA1 region of hippocampal slices from heterozygous BDNF knockout mice (BDNF +/− ) is dependent on nitric oxide (NO) signaling. Extracellular recording of synaptic field potentials elicited by presynaptic Schaffer collateral stimulation was performed in the CA1 region of hippocampal slices of 4- to 6-week-old mice, and LTP was induced by a theta burst stimulation protocol. Application of the nitric oxide inhibi…

Cannabinoid CB1 Receptor Calibrates Excitatory Synaptic Balance in the Mouse Hippocampus

2015

The endocannabinoid system negatively regulates the release of various neurotransmitters in an activity-dependent manner, thereby influencing the excitability of neuronal circuits. In the hippocampus, cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor is present on both GABAergic and glutamatergic axon terminals. CB1 receptor-deficient mice were previously shown to have increased hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP). In this study, we have investigated the consequences of cell-type-specific deletion of the CB1 receptor on the induction of hippocampal LTP and on CA1 pyramidal cell morphology. Deletion of CB1 receptor in GABAergic neurons in GABA-CB1-KO mice leads to a significantly decreased hippocampal …

Morphological and Postural Changes in the Foot during Pregnancy and Puerperium: A Longitudinal Study

2021

The aim of this study is to observe the morphological and postural changes to the foot that take place during pregnancy and the puerperium. Method: In this descriptive, observational, longitudinal study, we analysed 23 pregnant women, with particular attention to morphological and postural aspects of the foot, at three time points during and after pregnancy: in weeks 9–13 of gestation, weeks 32–35 of gestation and weeks 4–6 after delivery. The parameters considered were changes in foot length, the Foot Posture Index (FPI) and the Hernández Corvo Index, which were analysed using a pedigraph and taking into account the Body Mass Index (BMI). The same procedure was conducted in each review. Re…

Sliding Intermittent Control for BAM Neural Networks with Delays

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/615947 Open Access This paper addresses the exponential stability problem for a class of delayed bidirectional associative memory (BAM) neural networks with delays. A sliding intermittent controller which takes the advantages of the periodically intermittent control idea and the impulsive control scheme is proposed and employed to the delayed BAM system. With the adjustable parameter taking different particular values, such a sliding intermittent control method can comprise several kinds of control schemes as special cases, such as the continuou…

Neural Petri Control: an application on a mobile robot

2006

In the present work, an innovative nonlinear controller of nonholonomic mechanical systems, characterized by a dynamic not well known model a priori, using a new neural model obtained by the combination of a Petri net with a neural network, is proposed. The performances of the control algorithm are evaluated for tasks of tracking of time trajectories. The study of the stability of the total system to closed loop is based on the Lyapunov theory. Simulation experiments, made taking into consideration a nonholonomic mobile robot, to two wheels, allowed to verify the theoretical results.

Finite-time boundedness for uncertain discrete neural networks with time-delays and Markovian jumps

2014

This paper is concerned with stochastic finite-time boundedness analysis for a class of uncertain discrete-time neural networks with Markovian jump parameters and time-delays. The concepts of stochastic finite-time stability and stochastic finite-time boundedness are first given for neural networks. Then, applying the Lyapunov approach and the linear matrix inequality technique, sufficient criteria on stochastic finite-time boundedness are provided for the class of nominal or uncertain discrete-time neural networks with Markovian jump parameters and time-delays. It is shown that the derived conditions are characterized in terms of the solution to these linear matrix inequalities. Finally, n…

Exponential Transients in Continuous-Time Symmetric Hopfield Nets

2001

We establish a fundamental result in the theory of continuous-time neural computation, by showing that so called continuous-time symmetric Hopfield nets, whose asymptotic convergence is always guaranteed by the existence of a Liapunov function may, in the worst case, possess a transient period that is exponential in the network size. The result stands in contrast to e.g. the use of such network models in combinatorial optimization applications. peerReviewed

Adaptive Neural Stabilizing Controller for a Class of Mismatched Uncertain Nonlinear Systems by State and Output Feedback

2015

In this paper, first, an adaptive neural network (NN) state-feedback controller for a class of nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties is proposed. By using a radial basis function NN (RBFNN), a bound of unknown nonlinear functions is approximated so that no information about the upper bound of mismatched uncertainties is required. Then, an observer-based adaptive controller based on RBFNN is designed to stabilize uncertain nonlinear systems with immeasurable states. The state-feedback and observer-based controllers are based on Lyapunov and strictly positive real-Lyapunov stability theory, respectively, and it is shown that the asymptotic convergence of the closed-loop system to ze…
