Bioethics and neuroethics

2019

Neuroethics officially appeared at the start of the 21st century due to the progress made by the neurosciences, as an applied ethics related to bioethics, but also as an independent discipline in its own right. As an applied ethics, it tackles issues bordering on bioethics. As independent neuroethics, it deals with established philosophical problems from a neuroscientific standpoint in the broader sense. It involves two central questions: the design of a framework in which to select, interpret and integrate data from neuroscience on morality and outlining the appropriate method or methods for this new branch of knowledge. In both cases, most neuroethicists curiously claim to take a naturali…

2010

At the beginning of the XXI century neuroethics was born as a part of bioethics and also as a new kind of knowledge, capable of discovering the neural basis of the human behaviour. From that basis some neuroscientists intend to outline the foundations for a universal ethics. The article 1) analyses critically the process of foundation of such universal ethics, 2) takes into account the human cooperation paradox in order to complete the process, 3) tries to evaluate the contributions of neuroethics to ethics and its suitability to outline the foundations of a universal ethics.

Neuroethics 1995-2012. A bibliometric analysis of the guiding themes of an emerging research field

2016

International audience; In bioethics, the first decade of the twenty-first century was characterized by the emergence of interest in the ethical, legal and social aspects of neuroscience research. At the same time an ongoing extension of the topics and phenomena addressed by neuroscientists was observed alongside its rise as one of the leading disciplines in the biomedical science. One of these phenomena addressed by neuroscientists and moral psychologists was the neural processes involved in moral decision-making. Today both strands of research are often addressed under the label of neuroethics. To understand this development we recalled literature from 1995 to 2012 stored in the Mainz Neu…

Non-naturalistic Neuroethics for Moral Neuroeducation

2019

The aim of this chapter is to examine a series of key approaches towards identifying an appropriate neuroethics for moral neuroeducation. I begin by highlighting the shortcomings of neuroeducation models that side-line ethical issues. Neuroscience has contributed decisively to the knowledge of the brain mechanisms involved in teaching and learning processes. However, often only one form of learning, that based on instrumental subjects (mathematical calculation or reading), is taken into account. Undoubtedly, neuroeducational advances in this area have been very beneficial, but by focusing on education in strictly instrumental terms, the principles and ethical values that should structure ed…

Neurohermenéutica crítica

2021

The article supports the proposal for a critical neurohermeneutics. For this purpose it begins by considering the recently coined term «neurohermeneutics» and the various meanings it contains. The article then explores neurohermeneutics as the hermeneutics of neuroscience, and identifies some of the main limitations of naturalistic neuroethics that arise from the deficit of critical hermeneutics in its approaches. Finally, critical hermeneutics is defended as the necessary foundation of neuroethics.

Moral Neuroeducation, Ethics of Justice and Pluralism

2019

In order to design a model of moral neuroeducation for pluralistic and democratic societies three core issues need to be addressed in-depth: firstly, the cerebral basis of moral behaviour (neuroethics); secondly, how neuroscientific knowledge can be engaged in the teaching of moral education (moral neuroeducation); and finally, the specific ethical model underpinning this area of education (moral and political philosophy). The last of these three issues is the focus of this chapter, as it is fundamental to the whole project of moral neuroeducation, and it structures the approach to moral neuroeducation proposed in this chapter. Drawing on the conceptual framework of Adela Cortina’s ethics o…

Interculturality in dialogue with practical neurophilosophy

2015

The purpose of this article is to address the discour…

Racionalismo y emotivismo en perspectiva neuroética

2017

The Psycho-Biological Bases of Sports Supporters' Behaviour: The Virtuous Supporter

2012

Given current studies in moral psychology and following recent cases of wrong behaviour occurred in elite sporting events – e.g. the racist chants scandals in the English Premier League or the events following Mourinho's poke in the eye scandal – I shall analyse the extent to which supporters' brain make-up is determining them to behave in an ‘unfair way’. Yet this paper is not just a work on descriptive ethics, but a normative ethics work. Therefore, once I have developed the ‘psycho-biological account of sports supporters’, I shall explore whether or not a more virtuous account of sports supporting can be drawn. In order to fulfil this normative task I shall appeal to the concept of ‘fair…

Must Ethics for Moral Neuroeducation Be Naturalistic?

2019

The naturalization of ethics is being promulgated in a range of domains, one of which is neuroscience, hence the question stated in this chapter’s title. In order to answer this question, we must clarify what is meant by “naturalistic”; is it used in a reductionist sense? Or solely to refer to a concern for incorporating a neuroscientific perspective into the study of ethics, thereby without any intention that it should predominate within philosophical discussion?
