INVESTIGATION INTO THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE TRANSGENERATIONAL EFFECTS OF MATERNAL HIGH-FAT DIET-INDUCED DYSBIOSIS ON OFFSPRING BRAIN AND METABOL…
2021
Genetic and environmental factors, and their interactions, contribute to the etiology and pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The clinical heterogeneity and phenotypic variability in patients with NDDs have made identification of causal mechanisms contributing to their onset difficult. Yet, unraveling the underlying causes of NDDs is essential to the development of appropriate preventive/therapeutic strategies. Maternal obesity is considered one of the main nongenetic risk factors for NDDs in progeny. We and others have found that high-fat (HF) obesogenic diets in both humans and animal models induce significant modifications in ma…
Proprioception oculaire et dyslexie de développement
2005
Result…
Studies of malformation syndromes of man XIB: the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of zellweger: Comparative pathology
1976
A study of 11 autopsied cases of the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of Zellweger (ZS) is reported. All cases had severe, persistent congenital hypotonia, hepatic lobular disarray, renal cortical cysts and pulmonary hypoplasia. Many had cardiovascular malformations, hepatomegaly, cerebral cortical gyral maldevelopment and pancreatic islet hyperplasia. Additional, less frequent findings are delineated. Results of iron content studies of hepatic and renal tissues are related to age of survival and possible development of fibrosis.
Epidural hematoma after cochlear implantation in a 2.5-year-old boy.
2005
OBJECTIVE Report a case of an epidural hematoma after cochlear implantation in a 2.5-year-old boy, the diagnostic and therapeutical emergency management, as well as the postinterventional course and rehabilitation of the child. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case review. PATIENT Two and a half-year-old boy, suffering from early onset, profound sensorineural hearing loss had been diagnosed at an age of 1.5 years, which had been more severe on the right side initially, but had progressed to bilateral deafness. INTERVENTION AND COMPLICATION: Cochlear implantation on the left side, followed up by an extensive epidural hematoma, causing intracranial compression with a midline shift of 15 mm to the r…
The Role of Endoscopy in the Treatment of Acute Traumatic Anterior Epidural Hematoma of the Cervical Spine: Case Report
1997
OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Epidural hematoma (EDH) of the spine represents an uncommon neurosurgical disorder that sometimes requ;res emergent surgical decompressive therapy. Traumatic EDH of the cervical spine is exceedingly rare. The hematoma is usually located dorsally in the epidural space. We present one case of acute EDH located ventrally in the cervical spine. Special emphasis is placed on the role of spinal endoscopy in surgical treatment. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: After a fall from a tree, a 69-year-old man with rapidly increasing tetraparesis was referred to our institution. Plain films of the cervical spine revealed nothing abnormal. The results of computed tomography were highly sus…
LATE MORTALITY OF HEMORRHAGIC TRANSFORMATION OF ISCHEMIC STROKE
2012
Introduction. Hemorrhagic transformation (HT), a complication of ischemic stroke (IS) is supposed to influence patient’s prognosis. Aim of our study was to evaluate, in a hospital-based series of patients not treated with thrombolysis, the relationship between HT and late mortality. Methods. Mortality of individuals with spontaneous HT was compared to that of individuals without. Medical records of patients diagnosed with anterior IS during the period 2004-2006 were reviewed. Living status was obtained from the public record office of the municipality of Palermo or indirectly by telephone interview. Outcome measure was 90 days survival after IS onset. Kaplan-Meier estimates were used to con…
The scientific output of Pío del Río Hortega (1882-1945) and the laboratory of the Residencia de Estudiantes
2022
This study analyses the scientific output of Pío del Río Hortega (1882-1945). A review was conducted of the content of his publications, articles he wrote in collaboration with other authors, and the profiles of the publications in which his work appeared. Analysing the scientific oeuvre of Del Río Hortega necessarily also requires analysis of the laboratory at the Residencia de Estudiantes. It was at this laboratory that he developed his histological school, beginning in October 1920, and where his scientific work gained clear international recognition. To that end, this article offers an overview of Del Río Hortega' s Spanish and foreign students at the laboratory of the Residencia de Est…
Inflammatory mediators and other biomarkers in co-intoxicated patients after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2)
2016
Objective: The present study was conducted in attempt to identify reliable biomarkers in predicting the severity of neurological injury. Materials and methods: A number of 30 patients with confirmed CO poisoning and a number of 7 healthy control volunteers were involved into the study. All participants received at least 60 minutes of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) at 2.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA). Standard blood gas analysis was performed on 10 mL venous blood samples obtained immediately before and after HBO2. Seven biomarkers and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels were measured. Results: Following HBO2, all patients recovered fully and were discharged in stable condition. Significant diff…
Misdiagnosis and pitfalls in Panayiotopoulos syndrome
2019
Abstract Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS) is a frequent (6% among children of 1–15 years) and benign epileptic syndrome, characterized by predominantly autonomic symptoms (emesis, pallor, flushing, cyanosis, mydriasis/miosis, cardiorespiratory and thermoregulatory alterations, incontinence of urine and/or feces, hypersalivation, and modifications of intestinal motility) associated with simple motor focal seizures, which can be followed by secondary generalization. Panayiotopoulos syndrome can be extremely insidious, because it can mimic several condition, such as gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, encephalitis, syncope, migraine, sleep disorders, or even metabolic diseases. This…
Lateralized periodic discharges in insular status epilepticus: A case report of a periodic EEG pattern associated with ictal manifestation
2019
Highlights • Focal status epilepticus has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with aphasia, even in the absence of previous history of epilepsy. • Aphasia can be a rare presenting sign of insular lobe epilepsy. • Lateralized periodic discharges could represent an EEG ictal pattern.
