TANAMI: Tracking Active Galactic Nuclei with Austral Milliarcsecond Interferometry - II. Additional Sources

2018

TANAMI is a multiwavelength program monitoring active galactic nuclei (AGN) south of -30deg declination including high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) imaging, radio, optical/UV, X-ray and gamma-ray studies. We have previously published first-epoch 8.4GHz VLBI images of the parsec-scale structure of the initial sample. In this paper, we present images of 39 additional sources. The full sample comprises most of the radio- and gamma-ray brightest AGN in the southern quarter of the sky, overlapping with the region from which high-energy (>100TeV) neutrino events have been found. We characterize the parsec-scale radio properties of the jets and compare with the quasi-simu…

Collective flavor transitions of supernova neutrinos

2009

We give a very brief overview of collective effects in neutrino oscillations in core collapse supernovae where refractive effects of neutrinos on themselves can considerably modify flavor oscillations, with possible repercussions for future supernova neutrino detection. We discuss synchronized and bipolar oscillations, the role of energy and angular neutrino modes, as well as three-flavor effects. We close with a short summary and some open questions.

Search for dark matter in the Sun with the ANTARES neutrino telescope in the CMSSM and mUED frameworks

2012

ANTARES is the first neutrino telescope in the sea. It consists of a three-dimensional array of 885 photomultipliers to collect the Cherenkov light induced by relativistic muons produced in CC interactions of high energy neutrinos. One of the main scientific goals of the experiment is the search for dark matter. We present here the analysis of data taken during 2007 and 2008 to look for a WIMP signal in the Sun. WIMPs are one of the most popular scenarios to explain the dark matter content of the Universe. They would accumulate in massive objects like the Sun or the Galactic Center and their self-annihilation would produce (directly or indirectly) high energy neutrinos detectable by neutrin…

Analysis of the 4-year IceCube high-energy starting events

2016

After four years of data taking, the IceCube neutrino telescope has detected 54 high-energy starting events (HESE, or contained-vertex events) with deposited energies above 20TeV. They represent the first ever detection of high-energy extraterrestrial neutrinos and therefore, the first step in neutrino astronomy. In order to study the energy, flavor and isotropy of the astrophysical neutrino flux arriving at Earth, we perform different analyses of two different deposited energy intervals, [10 TeV $-$ 10 PeV] and [60 TeV $-$ 10 PeV]. We first consider an isotropic unbroken power-law spectrum and constrain its shape, normalization and flavor composition. Our results are in agreement with the …

Search for neutrino emission from gamma-ray sources with the Antares Telescope

2012

ANTARES is the first undersea neutrino detector ever built and presently the neutrino telescope with the largest effective area operating in the Northern Hemisphere. A three- dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes detects the Cherenkov light induced by the muons produced in the interaction of high energy neutrinos with the matter surrounding the detector. The detection of astronomical neutrino sources is one of the main goals of ANTARES. The search for point-like neutrino sources with the ANTARES telescope is described and the preliminary results obtained with data collected from 2007 to 2010 are shown. No cosmic neutrino source has been observed and neutrino flux upper limits have been…

Summary of Working Group 4: High Energy Neutrino Telescopes

2007

The field of high-energy neutrino astronomy is rapidly developing. A number of new experiments are currently being deployed and developed. Additionally, the recent successes of TeV gamma-ray astronomy have exciting implications for future neutrino telescopes. Here we will summarize these and other issues as they were discussed in the TeV II workshop's neutrino astronomy working group.

Standard and non-standard analysis of solar and reactor neutrino data

2010

We present an updated analysis of solar and reactor neutrino data in the standard framework of neutrino oscillations. We also consider the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions with matter and perform an alternative analysis of neutrino d ata studying the non-standard effects both on the neutrino detection and propagation through matter.

MiniBooNE: first results on the muon-to-electron neutrino oscillation search

2008

MiniBooNE's first results on a search for an electron neutrino excess in a muon neutrino beam are presented, together with an analysis of the data within a two neutrino Vμ → Ve appearance-only oscillation context. MiniBooNE finds excellent agreement between data and Standard Model predictions in the oscillation analysis energy region. If neutrino and antineutrino oscillations are the same, MiniBooNE excludes at ~98% confidence level the two neutrino Vμ → Ve appearance-only oscillation interpretation of the LSND anomaly. MiniBooNE also finds a discrepancy at energies below the oscillation analysis range, which is currently not understood and under investigation.

Search for sterile neutrinos at radioactive ion beam facilities

2013

We propose applications of Radioactive Ion Beam facilities to investigate physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, we focus upon the search for sterile neutrinos by means of a low energy beta-beam with a Lorentz boost factor of 1. In the considered setup, collected 8Li radioactive ions are sent inside a 4? detector filled with a liquid scintillator, with inverse-beta decay as neutrino detection channel. We provide exclusion curves for the sterile neutrino mixing parameters, based upon the 3+1 formalism, depending upon the achievable ion intensity. The proposed experiment represents a possible alternative to clarify the current anomalies observed in neutrino experiments.

Hunt for θ13with LENA

2012

In a hunt for by far missing neutrino mixing angle ?13 the accelerator experiments have recently indicated non-zero value and the dedicated reactor neutrino experiments are moving towards the data-taking phase to confirm that. The small effect of ?13 to the neutrino oscillation probabilities can be also complementarily probed using artificially made source of mono-chromatic neutrinos with low energies originated from electron capture processes. Due to the small energy of neutrino and tiny interaction cross section, and the expected scale of ?13 support the use of large liquid scintillation detector. In this work, the estimated sensitivities for measurement of mixing angle ?13 is presented i…
