Polymorphonuclear leukocyte integrins in chronic renal failure

Patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), in comparison with general population, show a higher cardiovascular mortality, not fully explained by the "traditional" risk factors. Among the new factors that have been hypothesized, leukocytes might play an important role. Effect of bakuchiol on leukocyte functions and some inflammatory responses in mice.

Abstract The effects of bakuchiol, a meroterpenoid isolated from the leaves of Psoralea glandulosa L., on phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity from different sources, human neutrophil responses, zymosan air pouch and topical inflammation in mice, were investigated. This natural product was a weak inhibitor of secretory and intracellular PLA2 but dose-dependently reduced the formation of LTB4 and TXB2 by human neutrophils and platelet microsomes, respectively. In addition, bakuchiol inhibited degranulation in human neutrophils, whereas superoxide generation was not affected. Abstract Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury can be related to complement activation with generation of chemotactic agents, adhesion molecule expression, release of cytokines and oxygen-derived free radicals, and subsequent neutrophil accumulation. In the present study the cardioprotective effects of a novel highly selective small molecule C1s inhibitor (C1s-INH-248, Knoll) were examined in a rabbit model of myocardial ischemia (I) and reperfusion (R; i.e., 60 min I + 180 min R). We have studied the role of TLR4 in murine defenses against Candida albicans in two TLR4-defective mouse strains: C3H/HeJ mice which have defective TLR4 signaling, and TLR4-/- knockout mice. Both TLR4-defective mice strains experimentally infected with virulent C. albicans cells showed no significant difference in survival as compared with their respective controls. Modulatory effect of bolinaquinone, a marine sesquiterpenoid, on acute and chronic inflammatory processes

The marine metabolite bolinaquinone is a novel inhibitor of secretory phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2)), with a potency on the human synovial enzyme (group II) higher than that of manoalide. This activity on the sPLA(2) was confirmed in vivo in the 8-h zymosan rat air pouch on the secretory enzyme accumulation in the pouch exudate. Pharmacological activity of PF-904 in guinea pig in vivo, and on human bronchus and neutrophils in vitro.

The effects of PF-904 (4-amino-1-ethyl-6-methylpyrazino[2,3-c][1,2,6]thiadiazine 2,2-dioxide), a pyrazinothiadiazine derivative, were examined in guinea-pig airways in vivo, in human isolated bronchus and human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. PF-904 (12.5-200 mg/kg, intraduodenal) reduced bronchoconstriction in response to histamine, arachidonic acid, platelet-activating factor (PAF) and methacholine. Behaviour of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in young subjects with acute myocardial infarction

In the last years the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been examined in cardiovascular disorders and in particular in coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Now we examined this parameter in subjects with juvenile myocardial infarction at the initial stage and after 3 and 12 months. We enrolled 123 young subjects (112 men and 11 women, mean age 39.4 ± 5.8 yrs) with AMI. The time interval between the AMI onset and the investigation was 13 ± 7 days. The mean value of NLR observed in young AMI subjects was significantly increased compared to normal controls (N = 1.817 ± 0.711; young AMI subjects = 2.376 ± 0.873, p <  0.0001). Development and pathology of echinostoma caproni in experimentally infected mice

In the present article, several parasitological features of mice, each experimentally infected with 75 metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae), were studied during the first 12 wk postinfection. Moreover, the early pathological responses also were analyzed and compared with data previously published on other host species of E. caproni to gain further insight into the factors determining worm rejection or establishment of chronic infections.
