Fake news e post verità nella società dell'algoritmo
2021
The essay has as its object fake news and excess of pieces of information with particular attention to the pandemic emergency we are currently living: Covid‐19. After a careful consideration about what fake news actually are, the paper analyzes the pitfalls concerning the communication through virtual technologies, where social networks let the news reach the user only if they pass some requirements, in order to give the user a personalized experience of being informed. As a result, the profiling process traps the user in a cage, which is a paradox, because the internet it’s literally supposed to be without borders and barriers. The current crisis caused by the global pandemic has brought t…
Il valore costituzionale della buona informazione
2022
Is there a constitutional right to good information? In the age of the internet and digital platforms, this question becomes more urgent and more pressing. In the debate in the Constituent Assembly already emerged the need for a control on sources of information, a requirement that, however, did not find a formulation expressed in Art. 21stof the Italian Costitution. It speaks only of a possible intervention of the legislator aimed at making known the «means of financing the periodic press». Nevertheless, the constitutional culture of contemporary democracies brings with it the idea of a reliance on the individual in the quality of the information he receives and thus raises the question of…
Correctness of judicial information and impartiality of the judge: the distortions of the media criminal trial
2022
This analysis, which focuses on the difficult relationship between criminal justice and judicial information, examines only some of the most controversial aspects, starting with an undisputed premise, namely that over time the function of communication in judicial matters has changed, evolving from informative to formative. I will reflect on the hiatus between the real justice as exercised in courtrooms and justice perceived by the public through media narratives, paying particular attention to the distortions of the so-called media trial and the resulting bias in the exercise of judicial power. Finally, we will consider possible solutions, which, in a perspective of striking a balance betw…
COVID-19, 'FAKE NEWS' Y VACUNACIÓN: LA NECESIDAD DE INMUNIZAR A LA SOCIEDAD DE LA DUDA VACUNAL
2021
One of the keys to overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic is the development of the vaccine in order to immunize the population. In addition to the medical complications to obtain the vaccine, we highlight the presence of other problems, such as the dissemination of fake news that add difficulties to overcoming the global problem, especially due to its incidence in the field of anti-vaccine movements, which have developed, with special presence in Italy in recent years. For this, we warn of the need to be prepared to overcome the two pandemics that are developing in parallel, the one caused by the virus and the one generated by the fake news.
Mercato delle idee e fake news. Note su un problema di esternalità negative nell’ambiente digitale
2023
The spread of fake news in the digital arena has put into question the traditional idea of the self-regulation of public debate: the well-known metaphor of “free market of ideas”. Because of the availability of digital media, the reduction of the overall cost in producing and disseminating false news has dramatically fallen. Everybody at any time can enter the public debate, even though with bad arguments. At the same time, the competition between traditional and digital media has produced an astonishing reduction of the average incomes of the professional journalists. This paper aims to bring to the fore the metaphor of the market of ideas, metaphor that has been used in the US for reducin…
The marketplace of ideas and its externalities: Who pays the cost of online fake news?
2023
Since the nineteenth century, thanks to J.S. Mill, an argument against limiting the freedom of expression has been gaining ground, namely that the truth of an argument is the result of free competition between different ideas in a “marketplace of ideas” and that this competition can yield an approximate form of the truth or a robust argument. In this paper I will argue that Mill’s model of the marketplace of ideas is an “idealised” model because it assumes that there is a subject who seeks to know in a detached manner, without being influenced by his or her expectations, needs, ideologies, or biases. However, the metaphor of the marketplace of ideas is still relevant because it also harbour…
Significati vecchi e nuovi di ideologia: una rassegna
2020
Old ideologies, defined as «grand narratives», seem to have faded away, but this is not a conclusive argument to state that ideology has, itself, disappeared. In fact, there are strong reasons to believe that it has not. In the first part, this article offers a synthetic survey of some of the most significant conceptions of ideology in order to avoid the confusion generated by uncritical uses of the term. The vantage point of the analysis is the fundamental conceptual opposition between «ideology» and «praxis» («truth», or «reality»). The second part of the article opens up some questions about how the new forms of ideology may thrive in the new spaces created by the communication technolog…
Ragioni mostruose.
2022
Spiegare o mentire? Due vie della comunicazione politica in Tucidide
2021
Chosen as word of the year in 2016 by the Oxford Dictionaries, post-truth is a very recent neologism, spread on the wave of recent political events (particularly Brexit and Trump's election in 2016). What I would like to emphasise here is that post-truth, along with fake-news, refers to issues that are by no means new nor exclusively linked to modernity. I am referring in particular to the debate in ancient Greece on the relationship between truth and lies in political action and the relationship between 'fact' and the discourse that represents it (i.e. between ergon and logos).
