The effects of short pulses of light at night on numbers of pineal "synaptic" ribbons and serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity in male Sprague-Dawl…
1986
To characterize further the functionally enigmatic "synaptic" ribbons (SR) of the mammalian pineal gland and to study possible relationships to melatonin synthesis, in the present investigation rats were exposed to short pulses of light at night when both SR numbers and serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity are high in comparison to day-time values. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were killed at 13:00 and 01:00 h, respectively, and at 01:10 and 02:00 h after exposure to light for 10 and 60 min, respectively. The pineals were rapidly taken out and cut sagittally in half. One half was processed for electron-microscopic quantitation of SR numbers and the other half for NAT determinations. It w…
Cross-sectional associations of objectively-measured sleep characteristics with obesity and type 2 diabetes in the PREDIMED-Plus trial.
2018
Study Objectives: To examine independent and combined associations of sleep duration and sleep variability with body composition, obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in elders at high cardiovascular risk. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 1986 community-dwelling elders with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome from PREDIMEDPlus trial. Associations of accelerometry-derived sleep duration and sleep variability with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and body composition were assessed fitting multivariable-adjusted linear regression models. Prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for obesity and T2D were obtained using multivariable-adjusted Cox regression w…
John M. Clark and frank H. Knight on the adding-up theorem, overhead costs, and more
2018
This note offers new archival insight into a 1925 polemical exchange between Frank Knight and John Maurice Clark that was hosted in the pages of Journal of Political Economy. Although the exchange centered on the effects of overhead costs on marginal productivity theory and the so-called adding-up theorem, it also provided significant elements to assess the methodological differences between two of the most representative American economists of the interwar years.

Spherical solid model for muon and hydrogen in metals
1979
The spherical solid model and the spin density functional formalism have been applied to calculate the screening of a positive point charge at different lattice sites in Al, Na and Cu. Results are obtained for the Knight shift, the electric field gradient, the heat of solution and the diffusion barrier. It is found essential to use the spin-polarised form to evaluate the Knight shift, especially at low metallic densities and for impurities with a high nuclear charge. Both the Knight shift and the electric field gradient are found to be markedly different for substitutional and interstitial positions. The calculated heat of solution of hydrogen is lowest for the octahedral position in FCC Al…

The Role of the Night & the Northern Lights in the Production of a New Touristic Imaginary of the North
2015
International audience; Our work is based on empirical observation: the development of a tourist offer proposing to observe the northern lights in some Nordic areas. We place these developments in a broader dynamic of changes in our relationship to the night. These changes find a translation in a tourism that takes the night and its environmental resources as objects. This communication focuses on a particular object of these tourist dynamics: the northern lights. We formulate the following hypothesis: the erosion by the urban lighting of the “natural” night and of the accessibility to its “environmental resources” (as the starry sky, for example) provides an opportunity for some areas of l…
"Signore, che pazzi questi mortali!" Un percorso intorno al "Midsummer Night's Dream" di Benjamin Britten
2017
Il saggio prende le mosse dal "Midsummer Night's Dream" di William Shakespeare e dalle sue versioni e interpretazioni musicali a partire dal XVII secolo e descrive la genesi, la struttura e lo sviluppo drammaturgico dell'opera di Benjamin Britten, proponendone una dettagliata descrizione musicale.
