On almost nilpotent varieties of subexponential growth
2015
Abstract Let N 2 be the variety of left-nilpotent algebras of index two, that is the variety of algebras satisfying the identity x ( y z ) ≡ 0 . We introduce two new varieties, denoted by V sym and V alt , contained in the variety N 2 and we prove that V sym and V alt are the only two varieties almost nilpotent of subexponential growth.
A note on endomorphisms of hypercentral groups
2002
Abstract Let H be a subnormal subgroup of a hypercentral group G. We prove that endomorphisms of G are uniquely determined by their restrictions to H if and only if Hom(G/HG,G)=0, and draw some consequences from this fact.
Some local properties defining $\mathcal T_0$-groups and related classes of groups
2016
We call $G$ a $\operatorname{Hall}_{\mathcal X}$-group if there exists a normal nilpotent subgroup $N$ of $G$ for which $G/N'$ is an ${\mathcal X}$-group. We call $G$ a ${\mathcal T}_0$-group provided $G/\Phi(G)$ is a ${\mathcal T}$-group, that is, one in which normality is a transitive relation. We present several new local classes of groups which locally define $\operatorname{Hall}_{\mathcal X}$-groups and ${\mathcal T}_0$-groups where ${\mathcal X}\in\{ {\mathcal T},\mathcal {PT},\mathcal {PST}\}$; the classes $\mathcal {PT}$ and $\mathcal {PST}$ denote, respectively, the classes of groups in which permutability and S-permutability are transitive relations.
Sylow numbers and nilpotent Hall subgroups
2013
Abstract Let π be a set of primes and G a finite group. We characterize the existence of a nilpotent Hall π-subgroup of G in terms of the number of Sylow subgroups for the primes in π.
A characterisation of nilpotent blocks
2015
Let $B$ be a $p$-block of a finite group, and set $m=$ $\sum \chi(1)^2$, the sum taken over all height zero characters of $B$. Motivated by a result of M. Isaacs characterising $p$-nilpotent finite groups in terms of character degrees, we show that $B$ is nilpotent if and only if the exact power of $p$ dividing $m$ is equal to the $p$-part of $|G:P|^2|P:R|$, where $P$ is a defect group of $B$ and where $R$ is the focal subgroup of $P$ with respect to a fusion system $\CF$ of $B$ on $P$. The proof involves the hyperfocal subalgebra $D$ of a source algebra of $B$. We conjecture that all ordinary irreducible characters of $D$ have degree prime to $p$ if and only if the $\CF$-hyperfocal subgrou…
Conjugacy classes, characters and products of elements
2019
Recently, Baumslag and Wiegold proved that a finite group $G$ is nilpotent if and only if $o(xy)=o(x)o(y)$ for every $x,y\in G$ of coprime order. Motivated by this result, we study the groups with the property that $(xy)^G=x^Gy^G$ and those with the property that $\chi(xy)=\chi(x)\chi(y)$ for every complex irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ and every nontrivial $x, y \in G$ of pairwise coprime order. We also consider several ways of weakening the hypothesis on $x$ and $y$. While the result of Baumslag and Wiegold is completely elementary, some of our arguments here depend on (parts of) the classification of finite simple groups.
Un nouvel invariant des algèbres de Lie et des super-algèbres de Lie quadratiques
2011
In this thesis, we defind a new invariant of quadratic Lie algebras and quadratic Lie superalgebras and give a complete study and classification of singular quadratic Lie algebras and singular quadratic Lie superalgebras, i.e. those for which the invariant does not vanish. The classification is related to adjoint orbits of Lie algebras o(m) and sp(2n). Also, we give an isomorphic characterization of 2-step nilpotent quadratic Lie algebras and quasi-singular quadratic Lie superalgebras for the purpose of completeness. We study pseudo-Euclidean Jordan algebras obtained as double extensions of a quadratic vector space by a one-dimensional algebra and 2-step nilpotent pseudo-Euclidean Jordan al…
On a class of generalised Schmidt groups
2015
In this paper families of non-nilpotent subgroups covering the non-nilpotent part of a finite group are considered. An A 5 -free group possessing one of these families is soluble, and soluble groups with this property have Fitting length at most three. A bound on the number of primes dividing the order of the group is also obtained.
Holographic duals of 6d RG flows
2018
A notable class of superconformal theories (SCFTs) in six dimensions is parameterized by an integer $N$, an ADE group $G$, and two nilpotent elements $\mu_\mathrm{L,R}$ in $G$. Nilpotent elements have a natural partial ordering, which has been conjectured to coincide with the hierarchy of renormalization-group flows among the SCFTs. In this paper we test this conjecture for $G=\mathrm{SU}(k)$, where AdS$_7$ duals exist in IIA. We work with a seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, consisting of the gravity multiplet and two $\mathrm{SU}(k)$ non-Abelian vector multiplets. We show that this theory has many supersymmetric AdS$_7$ vacua, determined by two nilpotent elements, which are naturally …
Rationally integrable vector fields and rational additive group actions
2016
International audience; We characterize rational actions of the additive group on algebraic varieties defined over a field of characteristic zero in terms of a suitable integrability property of their associated velocity vector fields. This extends the classical correspondence between regular actions of the additive group on affine algebraic varieties and the so-called locally nilpotent derivations of their coordinate rings. Our results lead in particular to a complete characterization of regular additive group actions on semi-affine varieties in terms of their associated vector fields. Among other applications, we review properties of the rational counterpart of the Makar-Limanov invariant…
