Root uptake, storage and remobilisation of autumn applied nitrogen to kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) vines
2000
Nitrous oxide emission from a moving bed membrane biofilm reactor: the effect of the sludge retention time
2016
The aim of the present study was to investigate the nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a University of Cape Town (UCT) moving bed membrane bioreactor pilot plant. An experimental campaign was carried out during 60 days with three different sludge retention time (SRT). The pilot plant reactor was provided of funnel shape covers that guaranteed gas accumulation in the headspace. The results highlighted that N2O concentrations significantly increased when the biofilm concentrations increased within the aerobic and anoxic compartments. Furthermore, results have shown an increase of N2O with the decrease of SRT. Moreover, the MBR tank resulted the key emission source (up to 70% of the total N2O …
Mapping landscape canopy nitrogen content from space using PRISMA data
2021
Abstract Satellite imaging spectroscopy for terrestrial applications is reaching maturity with recently launched and upcoming science-driven missions, e.g. PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) and Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP), respectively. Moreover, the high-priority mission candidate Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment (CHIME) is expected to globally provide routine hyperspectral observations to support new and enhanced services for, among others, sustainable agricultural and biodiversity management. Thanks to the provision of contiguous visible-to-shortwave infrared spectral data, hyperspectral missions open enhanced …
Aqueous coefficient calculations for chemicals and drugs
1999
Aqueous functional group activity coefficients (AQUAFAC) is a group‐contribution method for estimating the aqueous coefficients. We have written a program for the calculation of these coefficients. The solubility S w of alkanes shows variation of 8 orders of magnitude. The comparison with experiment shows that AQUAFAC gives good S w estimations. For 4'‐substituted acetanilides, I‐, Br‐, nitro‐, Cl‐, F‐ and methoxy‐substituents decrease S w, while formyl‐ and amino‐substituents increase S w. For acetaminophen esters, S w decreases from the acetate to the decanoate. The S w of 29 barbiturates shows typical errors of 0.4 log S w units. For the cyclo‐alkane‐l’,5‐spirobarbituric acids, S w decre…
ChemInform Abstract: A Catalytic Highly Enantioselective Direct Synthesis of 2-Bromo-2-nitroalkan-1-ols Through a Henry Reaction.
2009
Highly enantiomerically enriched 2-bromo-2-nitroalkan-1-ols are prepared by direct condensation of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes with bromonitromethane in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(II) acetate and a C1-symmetric camphor-derived amino pyridine ligand.
ChemInform Abstract: A General Overview of the Organocatalytic Intramolecular Aza-Michael Reaction
2015
The organocatalytic intramolecular aza-Michael reaction gives access to enantiomerically enriched nitrogen-containing heterocycles in a very simple manner. Enals, enones, conjugated esters and nitro olefins have been employed as Michael acceptors, while moderate nitrogen nucleophiles such as sulphonamides, carbamates and amides have been shown to be appropriate Michael donors in this type of reaction. Additionally, the process has been performed under both covalent and non-covalent catalysis, with diaryl prolinols, imidazolidinones, thioureas and chiral binol phosphoric acids being the most frequently used catalysts. The level of efficiency reached with this protocol is demonstrated by the …
Ferrocenylbis(ylene) phosphoranes
1997
The ferrocenylbis(methylene)phosphorane Fc-P(=CTms 2 ) 2 ( 1 ) (Fc = −C 5 H 4 FeC 5 H 5 ) can be synthesized starting from ferrocenyldichlorophosphane FcPCl 2 or ferrocenyldilithiophosphane FcPLl 2 . The X-ray structure of ( 1 ) shows some unusual structural features, which indicate considerable electronic interaction of the ferrocenyl group and the σ 3 λ 5 -phosphorane unit. As a consequence of this interaction, the rotational barrier of the methylene bonds is extraordinary low. Therefore, in contrast to other bis(methylene)phosphoranes, the endo - and exo -Tms groups are indistinguishable on the NMR time scale even at −100°C. The analogous ferrocenylbis(imino)phosphorane Fc-P(=NTms) 2 ( 9…
ChemInform Abstract: Enantioselective Addition of Nitromethane to 2-Acylpyridine N-Oxides. Expanding the Generation of Quaternary Stereocenters with …
2014
The direct asymmetric Henry reaction with prochiral ketones, leading to tertiary nitroaldols, is an elusive reaction so far limited to a reduced number of reactive substrates such as trifluoromethyl ketones or α-keto carbonyl compounds. Expanding the scope of this important reaction, the direct asymmetric addition of nitromethane to 2-acylpyridine N-oxides catalyzed by a BOX-Cu(II) complex to give the corresponding pyridine-derived tertiary nitroaldols having a quaternary stereogenic center with variable yields and good enantioselectivity, is described.
The Use of 15N NMR for the Understanding of Nitrogen Physisorption.
1994
Abstract Nitrogen adsorption at liquid nitrogen temperature, 77K, is universally employed to determine pore dimensions. The nature of nitrogen physisorbed within the micropores of ZSM-5 zeolite was studied by in situ15N NMR as it depends on the partial pressure of the nitrogen and the temperature above and below 77K. An increase in the volume of adsorption of nitrogen at 77K occurs at a relative pressure of ~0.18 for this zeolite. The nature of the nitrogen was studied below and above this increase in nitrogen adsorption. We find that two states (phases) of nitrogen are evident. We conclude that two phases can be present but that a solid phase of nitrogen is not evident even as the temperat…
Exposure assessment of fruits contaminated with pesticide residues from Valencia, 2001– 03
2006
A total of 634 samples of oranges, tangerines, peaches, nectarines, khakis and watermelons were collected from an Agricultural Valencia Community Cooperative during the May 2001 to April 2003 campaigns and they were analysed for 15 pesticides among those recommended for pest treatment. A conventional multiresidue analytical procedure based on ethyl acetate extraction was used followed by gas chromatography coupled to a nitrogen phosphorus detector for routine analysis; and mass spectrometry was performed for confirmation. Recovery studies with spiked samples at 0.5 mg kg-1 for each pesticide ranged from 52% for acephate to 87% for fenthion with a standard deviation20%. Limits of quantificat…
