Nitrate removal microbiology in woodchip bioreactors : a case-study with full-scale bioreactors treating aquaculture effluents
2020
Woodchip bioreactors are viable low-cost nitrate (NO3−) removal applications for treating agricultural and aquaculture discharges. The active microbial biofilms growing on woodchips are conducting nitrogen (N) removal, reducing NO3− while oxidizing the carbon (C) from woodchips. However, bioreactor age, and changes in the operating conditions or in the microbial community might affect the NO3− removal as well as potentially promote nitrous oxide (N2O) production through either incomplete denitrification or dissimilatory NO3− reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Here, we combined stable isotope approach, amplicon sequencing, and captured metagenomics for studying the potential NO3− removal rates, a…
Raman spectroscopy of glycolic acid complexes with N2
2019
High overtone excitation induced conformational isomerization of glycolic acid – nitrogen complex in an argon matrix was investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The interaction between glycolic acid and nitrogen change the green light (532 nm) induced isomerization processes compared to non-complexed glycolic acid. The 180° rotation around of the Csingle bondC bond and stabilization of carboxyl Odouble bondCsingle bondOsingle bondH dihedral angle to trans position were the main conformational changes observed in the complex of the lowest energy conformer and nitrogen. Interestingly, only one stable light-induced conformational product was observed, which isomerises back to the lowest energy con…

Treatment of trans-[PtCl2(NCR)2] 1 (R = Me (1a), Et (1b), o-ClC6H4 (1c), p-ClC6H4 (1d), p-(HCdouble bond; length as m-dashO)C6H4 (1e), p-O2NC6H4CH2 (1f)) with 1,3-diiminoisoindoline HNdouble bond; length as m-dashCC6H4C(NH)double bond; length as m-dashNH 2 gives access to the corresponding (1,3,5,7,9-pentaazanona-1,3,6,8-tetraenato)Pt(II) complexes [PtCl{NHdouble bond; length as m-dashC(R)Ndouble bond; length as m-dashC(C6H4)NCdouble bond; length as m-dashNC(R)double bond; length as m-dashNH}] 3a–f, in good yields (65–70%). The reaction of trans-[PdCl2(NCMe)2] 4a with 2 furnishes (1,3,5,7,9-pentaazanona-1,3,6,8-tetraenato)Pd(II) complex [PdCl{NHdouble bond; length as m-dashC(Me)Ndouble bond…
Synthesis of Polycyclic Indolines utilizing a reduction/cyclization cascade reaction
2021
Subsequent reduction and dearomatizing cyclization reactions open up an entry into the synthesis of novel N-fused polycyclic indolines. The dearomatizing cyclization as key step of the sequence proceeds well with Cu(OTf)2 or TfOH as catalyst. At elevated temperature reduction of nitro-substituted precursors with iron under acidic conditions affords a broad variety of polycyclic indolines directly in a two-step cascade reaction in good to excellent yields. Using the developed protocol, the alkaloids Tryptanthrin and Phaitanthrin C have been prepared. peerReviewed
Convergent results from experimental and theoretical DFT studies of the intramolecular rearrangement of Z-hydrazones of 3-acetyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles
2004
A combined kinetic and theoretical study of the monocyclic rearrangements of heterocycles (MRH) has been carried out. The interconversion of the Z-hydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole into the corresponding triazole has been experimentally investigated in dioxane/water in the pS(+) range 5.5(5)-13.9. The uncatalyzed region has been examined at the DFT level using a model system formed by the Z-hydrazone of 3-formyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole and one or two water molecules. The environmental effect of the solvent has been emulated using a continuum model (COSMO) approach. The kinetic data suggest a concerted process where the magnitude of the activation barrier is determined by the interpl…
Metabolism via arginase or nitric oxide synthase: two competing arginine pathways in macrophages
2014
Macrophages play a major role in the immune system, both as antimicrobial effector cells and as immunoregulatory cells, which induce, suppress or modulate adaptive immune responses. These key aspects of macrophage biology are fundamentally driven by the phenotype of macrophage arginine metabolism that is prevalent in an evolving or ongoing immune response. M1 macrophages express the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS), which metabolizes arginine to nitric oxide (NO) and citrulline. NO can be metabolized to further downstream reactive nitrogen species, while citrulline might be reused for efficient NO synthesis via the citrulline-NO cycle. M2 macrophages are characterized by expression of the…
Method for Reproducible Shipboard Segmented Flow Analysis Ammonium Measurement Using an In-House Reference Material for Quality Control
2021
Ammonium is a fundamental nutrient for phytoplankton growth in seawater and is a key component of the microbial loop. Ammonium measured in parallel with other nutrients is crucial in understanding the small temporal scale changes in oceanographic ecology. Despite the importance of measuring ammonium at sea, owing to its lability, there is no consensus on the best method. The lack of availability of certified reference materials for ammonium in seawater also makes it difficult to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of ammonium measurements. In this study we present a modified segmented flow analysis method using ortho-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) with fluorescence detection to measure ammonium…
Crop Nitrogen Retrieval Methods for Simulated Sentinel-2 Data Using In-Field Spectrometer Data.
2021
Nitrogen (N) is one of the key nutrients supplied in agricultural production worldwide. Over-fertilization can have negative influences on the field and the regional level (e.g., agro-ecosystems). Remote sensing of the plant N of field crops presents a valuable tool for the monitoring of N flows in agro-ecosystems. Available data for validation of satellite-based remote sensing of N is scarce. Therefore, in this study, field spectrometer measurements were used to simulate data of the Sentinel-2 (S2) satellites developed for vegetation monitoring by the ESA. The prediction performance of normalized ratio indices (NRIs), random forest regression (RFR) and Gaussian processes regression (GPR) f…
Biological nitrogen in the legislation of the EU
2014
This article presents an analysis of the legislative framework of the EU, in which regulation or support for the use of biological forms of nitrogen in agricultural production in Europe is implemented. Two main documents that in our opinion contribute to positive changes nowadays occurring in biological agriculture include the «Common Agricultural Policy» of EU Member States and the 91/676/EEC Directive with all its modern amendments. The changes in recent years in the major laws and regulations of the EU, aimed at supporting the implementation ofthe farming technologies in agricultural production, which are based on the use of biological nitrogen, were analyzed. The results suggest the foll…
