Indoor air quality in schools of a highly polluted south Mediterranean area
2019
This study aimed at surveying lower secondary schools in southern Italy, in a highly polluted area. A community close to an industrial area and three villages in rural areas was investigated. Indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH), gaseous pollutants (CO 2 and NO 2 ), selected biological pollutants in indoor dust, and the indoor/outdoor mass concentration and elemental composition of PM 2.5 were ascertained. Temperature and RH were within, or close to, the comfort range, while CO 2 frequently exceeded the threshold of 1000 ppm, indicating inadequate air exchange rate. In all the classrooms, median NO 2 levels were above the WHO threshold value. Dermatophagoides p. allergen concentration…
Determination of nitrogen in hydrolyzed protein formulations by continuous vapour phase FTIR.
2006
An on-line system with vapour generation (VG) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometric detection has been developed for the determination of free ammonium and organic nitrogen in agrochemical formulations containing hydrolyzed proteins. Commercial samples were digested, in batch mode, with sulphuric acid and the obtained solution was alkalinized on-line to transform the NH(4)(+) to NH(3) that was continuously monitored by FTIR. Free ammonium was determined in the same system after simple dilution of undigested samples with water. Different gas phase separators were assayed in order to introduce gaseous NH(3) into a home made IR gas cell of 10 cm pathlength, where the correspondin…

Abstract. Hydroxyl (OH) radical reactivity (kOH) has been measured for 18 years with different measurement techniques. In order to compare the performances of instruments deployed in the field, two campaigns were conducted performing experiments in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR at Forschungszentrum Jülich in October 2015 and April 2016. Chemical conditions were chosen either to be representative of the atmosphere or to test potential limitations of instruments. All types of instruments that are currently used for atmospheric measurements were used in one of the two campaigns. The results of these campaigns demonstrate that OH reactivity can be accurately measured for a wide rang…
Chemiluminescent method for detection of eutrophication sources by estimation of organic amino nitrogen and ammonium in water.
2006
An automatic method has been developed for the estimation of organic amino nitrogen (CH2-NH) and ammonium in water samples. We propose a continuous flow system in which nitrogen compounds react with hypochlorite reagent to produce chloramines. Subsequently, the mixture is mixed with luminol, generating a chemiluminescence signal. The signal emission at 425 nm, registered as a function of time, decreases as nitrogen concentration increases, due to the decrease on hypochlorite concentration. A large number of nitrogen compounds have been assayed and their sensitivities compared, in milligrams per liter nitrogen. The ammonium calibration graph, expressed as N, can be used for most of the assay…
Determination of Paint Solvents by Vapour Phase Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry.
1997
Abstract A fast procedure has been developed for the direct determination of paint solvents. The method is based on the injection of small volumes of untreated solvent mixtures into a heated Pyrex glass reactor in which the sample is volatilized and introduced by means of a flow of nitrogen into an IR multiple pass gas cell and the spectrum in the mid-IR region is registered as a function of time. Data found for samples are interpolated in calibration graphs obtained by injecting different volumes of pure compounds which constitute the solvent mixture. A methylisobutylketone (MIBK) toluene mixture was used as test system to develop the proposed procedure. The method provides a limit of dete…
Determination of mercury in rice by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry after microwave-assisted digestion.
2010
Abstract A cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry method (CV-AFS) has been developed for the determination of Hg in rice samples at a few ng g−1 concentration level. The method is based on the previous digestion of samples in a microwave oven with HNO3 and H2O2 followed by dilution with water containing KBr/KBrO3 and hydroxylamine and reduction with SnCl2 in HCl using external calibration. The matrix interferences and the effect of nitrogen oxide vapors have been evaluated and the method validated using a certified reference material. The limit of detection of the method was 0.9 ng g−1 with a recovery percentage of 95 ± 4% at an added concentration of 5 ng g−1. The concentration level …
Comparison of different sorbents for on-line liquid-solid extraction followed by high-performance liquid chromatographic determination of nitrogen-co…
1998
Abstract LiChrolut EN [poly(styrene-divinylbenzene), PSDVB], Carbograph (graphitized carbon black, GCB), Isolute CN (cyanopropylsilica), Isolute C 2 (ethylsilica), and LiChrospher RP18 (octadecylsilica) were studied for on-line solid-phase extraction of twelve nitrogen containing pesticides from water. Determination (UV 210 nm) was performed with a Spherisorb C 8 analytical column and an acetonitrile-water gradient. The mean recoveries from 50 ml ranged from 83% for RP18 to 44% for GCB, and decreased in the following order: RP18, CN, LiChrolut EN, C 2 , and GCB. GCB showed poor recoveries due to incomplete desorption with the acetonitrile-water gradient used, and memory effects were detecte…
Zum metabolismus von dialkyldithiocarbamaten
1974
Abstract Metabolism dialkyldithiocarbamates. I. Determination of amines using a reaction with isocyanates followed by gas chromatographic identification of the urea derivatives formed. N,N′-Di- and N,N′,N′-trisubstituted areas, formed by the reaction of amines with isocyanates, e.g. tert. -butyl isocyanate or 3-trifluoromethylphenyl isocyanate, are useful derivatives for the gas chromatographic analysis of primary and secondary amines. The separation is carried out at temperatures between 70 and 130° on liquid phases such as silicone OV-101 and silicone OV-17. With nitrogen and electron capture detectors the detection limit is 10 10 g. Trace analysis of simple primary and secondary amines i…
Acetone measurements in the exhaled air by the cavity ring-down spectrometry
2020
Our work is focused to develop sensitive optical diagnostic methods for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds in the breath. For the breath measurements, we have built a cavity ring-down spectrometer, operated in the UV region. The system was tested and calibrated using a KinTek automated permeation tube system with nitrogen as a carrier gas, as well as self- prepared acetone mixtures in air with known concentrations. In this paper, we present results of the measurements of acetone concentration in the breath for the test group of randomly selected 40 people in the age group over 50. We observed the values of acetone concentration in the breath in the range from 0,1 – 80 ppm, with a m…
Spark source mass spectrometric assessment of boron and nitrogen concentrations in crystalline gallium arsenide
1999
The residual or doped element concentration [E] in GaAs measured by SSMS is only accurate with respect to the relative sensitivity coefficient RSCE. For a trace element concentration, the RSCE = [E]SSMS/[E]TRUE is set to unity, if no reference material or method is available to approximate the concentration to the true value. For boron a relative sensitivity coefficient of RSCB = 0.94 ± 0.08 was obtained using TI-IDMS as a reference method. RSCN = 1 is used for nitrogen determinations. A boron and nitrogen detection limit of 4.4 × 1013 cm–3 is achieved. SSMS was used as reference method to calibrate the FTIR factor fE = [E] / Iα due to the integrated local vibrational mode absorption Iα of …
