Synthesis, structural characterisation and biological studies of new mononuclear platinum(II) complexes with sterically hindered heterocyclic ligands

Abstract Three novel cisplatin analogues were synthesized, designed according to an approach which violates the “classical” structure–activity relationship, by replacing the diamine ligands with a planar N donor heterocycle giving a sterically hindered complex. Moreover, the sterical hindrance of antitumor drug candidates potentially makes them less susceptible to deactivation by sulphur-containing proteins and helping to overcome resistance mechanisms. Synthesis and NMR characterization of seven new substituted pyridine N-oxides

Abstract Seven 3-substituted (alkylamino, alkylnitramino and alkylnitrosoamino) derivatives of pyridine N-oxide have been prepared and their 1H, 13C and 15N NMR chemical shifts assigned based on PFG 1H, 13C HMQC and PFG 1H, X (X = 13C or 15N) HMBC experiments. In the sterically most crowded congener, 3-ethylnitramino-4-nitropyridine N-oxide, chemical non-equivalence or diastereotopicity of the N–CH2 protons was observed probably due to the chirality of the adjacent amino nitrogen caused by its restricted inversion. The in, out Asymmetric Pseudo-Triple Helical Form of a D3h Diaza-Macropentacycle

A sterically encumbered [N(2)S(6)] macropentacycle (5) related to diazamacrobicycles and cryptands has been synthesized in 53% yield by the [1+1] condensation reaction between functionalized macrocyclic and macrotricyclic precursors. A macrononacycle (18) resulting from the corresponding [2+2] condensation was isolated in 7% yield from the reaction mixture. Both compounds showed broad features in their room-temperature (1)H NMR spectra, but their maximal average symmetry (D(3h) and D(2h), respectively) was achieved at high temperature (380 K). Use of gases to improve survival of Bifidobacterium bifidum by modifying redox potential in fermented milk

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the oxidoreduction potential, modified using gas, on the growth and survival of a probiotic strain, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and 2 yogurt strains, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus. Three fermented milks were manufactured with an initial oxidoreduction potential value adjusted to +440 mV (control milk), +350 mV (milk gassed with N(2)), and -300 mV [milk gassed with N(2) plus 4% (vol/vol) H(2) (N(2)-H(2))]. Antineoplastic Drug-Induced Cardiotoxicity: A Redox Perspective

Antineoplastic drugs can be associated with several side effects, including cardiovascular toxicity (CTX). Biochemical studies have identified multiple mechanisms of CTX. Chemoterapeutic agents can alter redox homeostasis by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species RNS. Cellular sources of ROS/RNS are cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, stromal and inflammatory cells in the heart. Mitochondria, peroxisomes and other subcellular components are central hubs that control redox homeostasis. Mitochondria are central targets for antineoplastic drug-induced CTX. Effects of sewage sludge addition to Norway spruce seedlings on nitrogen availability and soil fauna in clear-cut areas

Anaerobically digested and composted sewage sludge (CSS) has been suggested to be a slow-release fertilizer in forestry and an alternative to quick-release inorganic fertilizers. The effects of CSS with or without added carbohydrate on inorganic nitrogen availability and on soil animals were tested in two Norway spruce plantations. Half of the seedlings were individually fertilized with CSS, and the rest were left as controls. Solid sucrose was added to half of the fertilized and untreated seedlings. High-pressure Raman study of theN2stretching vibration in argon-nitrogen mixtures at room temperature

We present room-temperature Raman investigations of the nitrogen molecule stretching vibration in ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ from x=1 to x=0.59 in the pressure range 1\ensuremath{\le}p\ensuremath{\le}31 GPa. Ar substitution leads to an inhomogeneous broadening of the vibrational signal. The \ensuremath{\beta}-\ensuremath{\delta} phase transition of pure ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ is shifted to higher pressures for x=0.75. The substituted Ar atoms preferentially occupy the 2a sites of the cubic elementary cell of the orientationally disordered \ensuremath{\delta} phase. Method of Discrimination of Surface Fractality

Abstract A simple method for the discrimination of surface fractality is proposed. This method is based on the comparison of the nitrogen adsorption isotherm on a given sample with the "standard" isotherm on a smooth surface. The proposed comparative method makes it possible to determine the lower limit of the scale range of surface fractality. A thermodynamic method is recommended as a complement to fractal analysis in the scale range of about 10-1000 A. The results of the investigation of surface roughness are presented with examples of typical samples of silica gels, porous glasses, apatite, and coal.

Characterization and Evaluation of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Char from Alkali Lignin in Subcritical Temperatures.

An evaluation of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) char is investigated in this work. Morphological studies, N2 adsorption behavior, FTIR analysis, thermal behavior, and elemental composition are studied. The HTL char yield showed an increase with higher operating temperatures. It increased from 11.02% to 33% when the temperature increased from 573 K to 623 K. At lower temperatures, the residence time showed an impact on the yield, while close to the critical point, residence time became less impactful.
