La diagnostica delle malattie infettive: Tra metafora del passato e itinerario nel futuro

1993

A global emergency is threatening mankind, awakening dead ghosts and causing alarm about our present and future: it is the apparently irreversible spread of infectious diseases. This critical and worrying situation should be acknowledged and carefully followed by the radiological profession since all of us – teachers, specialists, professionals – have to deal with imaging diagnostic modalities deriving information from a deceitful and camouflageing anatomo-functional substratum. The increasing spread of infectious diseases is due to a wide range of concomitant factors: HIV infection, drug addiction, migration fenomena and the related opportunistic infections combined with poor hygienic, physi…

Mechanically stable metal layers for ohmic and blocking contacts on CdZnTe detectors by electroless deposition

2015

CdZnTe detectors are commonly exploited for the detection of gamma rays. However, obtaining mechanical stable, low noise contacts on CdZnTe is still an issue. In particular, ohmic contacts would be preferable for high flux applications. In this work, we show that it is possible to obtain mechanical stable gold contacts by electroless deposition in methanol solution. Moreover, we show that electroless deposited nickel contacts are also mechanical stable and are good candidates for the realization of ohmic contacts on high resistivity CdZnTe crystals.

Charge carrier transport mechanisms in CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique

2016

In this work, we report on the results of electrical characterization of CdZnTe (CZT) detectors, with gold electroless contacts, grown by the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman technique (B-VB), currently produced at IMEM-CNR (Parma, Italy). The detectors, with different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), have the same electrode layout: the anode is a central electrode (2 x 2 mm(2)) surrounded by a guard ring electrode. The cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1 x 4.1 mm(2)). Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were measured at different temperatures in order to study the charge transport and the electrical properties. These detectors were compared with the trav…

Joint Topology and Radio Resource Optimization for Device-to-Device Based Mobile Social Networks

2018

In this paper, we consider a joint topology and radio resource optimization for device-to-device (D2D) based mobile social networks. The considered social network is an interest based which is modeled as a d -intersection binomial random graph. The Radio network is also modeled as a random graph where an edge between any two distinct nodes is activated with a certain probability that is equivalent to the probability of exceeding a certain signal to interference ratio for that link. The entire network is then modeled as an intersection graph between the social and radio induced graphs. Thereafter, network topology is optimized such that enabled social edges satisfy certain network connectivi…

Towards adaptive localization in wireless sensor networks

2012

It is often useful or even indispensable to know the locations of the nodes in a wireless sensor network (WSN), from both network functionality and applications point of view. A potential yet one of the most challenging method is to utilize received signal strength indicator (RSSI) for distance estimation. Albeit easily adopted, using of RSSI is notorious for imprecise distance estimates which can lead to inaccuracies in location estimates. In this paper, we study RSSI-based localization in WSNs through simulation experiments. We evaluate and compare a hybrid algorithm and its modifications with well-known range-based and range-free localization algorithms. Simulation results indicate that …

Translation, Adaption, and Psychometric Testing of the Myanmar Version of the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey for People Living With HIV…

2021

Introduction: Valid and reliable instruments are crucial for measuring perceived social support among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the English version of the 19-item Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) adapted for PLHIV in Myanmar. Methods: Based on a standard cross-cultural procedure, we adapted the MOS-SSS and formed a Myanmar version of the scale (MOS-SSS-M), and then tested its validity and reliability. A sample of 250 eligible PLHIV was collected from a closed Facebook group that included more than 10,000 Myanmars, most of whom were PLHIV.Results: The MOS-SSS-M achieved a Cronbach’s α of 0.82–0.95. Confirmatory…

Effcts of Dextran Sulphate (Dxs) on Lymphocyte Localization in Complement-Deficient Mice: Evidence that the Fifth Component of Complement is not Impl…

1984

AbstractThe effects of subcutaneously or intraperitoneally administered dextran sulphate (DXS) (5nmg/kg) on the subseguent 1 h localization of intravenously injected radiolabelled lymph node cells was investigated in complement deficient mice which lack C5.DXS proved to be equally as potent in depressing cell localizzation in deficient as compared to normal mice. These findings. indicate that the terminal complement components are not, essential for DXS activity.

The influence of aluminium cations on electrocarboxylation processes in undivided cells with Al sacrificial anodes

2005

Abstract The influence of Al cations on the electrochemical carboxylation of acenaphthylene ( 1 ), benzophenone ( 2 ), 6-methoxy-2-acetonaphthone ( 3 ), and benzyl chloride ( 4 ) has been investigated in dimethylformamide at a glassy carbon cathode. The Al 3+ ions were either added at the beginning of the experiment or were released from the anode during electrocarboxylation. It has been found that when Al cations are added to the reaction medium, they strongly influence the reduction process, in most cases leading to a complete change of the mechanism. For example, in the case of 1 , the radical anion ( 1 − ) formed upon 1e − reduction rapidly reacts with Al 3+ to give an Al(III) adduct, w…

Regulatory T cells selectively preserve immune privilege of self-antigens during viral central nervous system infection.

2012

Abstract Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are important for the attenuation of immune reactions. During viral CNS infections, however, an indiscriminate maintenance of CNS immune privilege through Treg-mediated negative regulation could prevent autoimmune sequelae but impair the control of viral replication. We analyzed in this study the impact of Tregs on the development of acute viral encephalomyelitis, T cell-mediated antiviral protection, and prevention of CNS autoimmunity following intranasal infection with the gliatropic mouse hepatitis virus strain A59. To assess the contribution of Tregs in vivo, we specifically depleted CD4+Foxp3+ T cells in a diphtheria toxin-dependent manner. We found …

A brief overview on the numerical behavior of an implicit meshless method and an outlook to future challenges

2015

In this paper recent results on a leapfrog ADI meshless formulation are reported and some future challenges are addressed. The method benefits from the elimination of the meshing task from the pre-processing stage in space and it is unconditionally stable in time. Further improvements come from the ease of implementation, which makes computer codes very flexible in contrast to mesh based solver ones. The method requires only nodes at scattered locations and a function and its derivatives are approximated by means of a kernel representation. A perceived obstacle in the implicit formulation is in the second order differentiations which sometimes are eccesively sensitive to the node configurat…
