Neck node dissection in thyroid cancer. A review.
2010
INTRODUCTION: thyroid cancer recurs most commonly in one or more cervical lymph nodes. Surgical treatment for differentiated or medullary thyroid carcinoma consists of total thyroidectomy (TT). The aim is to elucidate the potential benefits and drawbacks of neck dissection TT related. MATERIALS AND METHODS: differences between therapeutic and prophylactic neck dissection were analysed to prevent post-operative morbidity, neck recurrences and improve survival. DISCUSSION: there is considerable controversy regarding the treatment of patients with cervical node metastases specially in differentiated thyroid cancer. Considering that a neck dissection might help to reduce local recurrence, espec…

L'ESPLORAZIONE DEI LINFONODI REGIONALI NEL NEUROBLASTOMA LOCALIZZATO: Compliance alle Direttive Chirurgiche nello Studio Nazionale NB 85
1993
Accurate staging of patients with Neuroblastoma is essential for prognosis and for determining the most appropriate treatment. The neoplastic involvement of regional lymph-nodes (l.n.) is an important prognostic feature; the surgical exploration of these L.n. is mandatory for localized neuroblastoma (NBL) (stage I and II) in wich surgery represent the main treatment. The Authors have carried out a retrospective analysis of the cases registered in Italy between 1985 and 1989
Main routes of trasmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infection in a family setting in Palermo, Italy.
1988
A cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study was carried out on household contacts and sexual partners of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody-positive intravenous drug abusers in Palermo, Italy, in 1985 to evaluate factors that influenced HIV transmission. A total of 43 index cases, 36 spouses or heterosexual partners, 28 children, and 55 adult household members were enrolled. None of the household members without sexual contact, who had shared items and facilities and had interacted with the index cases, contracted HIV infection. However, six of 36 sexual partners had antibodies to HIV. It was observed that the risk of HIV infection was significantly associated with the frequency of s…
Oral and Vaginal Epithelial Cell Lines Bind and Transfer Cell-Free Infectious HIV-1 to Permissive Cells but Are Not Productively Infected
2014
The majority of HIV-1 infections worldwide are acquired via mucosal surfaces. However, unlike the vaginal mucosa, the issue of whether the oral mucosa can act as a portal of entry for HIV-1 infection remains controversial. To address potential differences with regard to the fate of HIV-1 after exposure to oral and vaginal epithelium, we utilized two epithelial cell lines representative of buccal (TR146) and pharyngeal (FaDu) sites of the oral cavity and compared them with a cell line derived from vaginal epithelium (A431) in order to determine (i) HIV-1 receptor gene and protein expression, (ii) whether HIV-1 genome integration into epithelial cells occurs, (iii) whether productive viral in…
Auditory brain stem responses in patients with human immunotropic virus infection of different stages.
1992
Thirty patients (26 men, 4 women) with human immunotropic virus infection of different stages were examined. Eleven patients had a history of i.v. drug abuse, nine patients had a history of treated lues infection, and one patient suffered from Kaposi's sarcoma. At the time of the examination, opportunistic infections or acute encephalitis were not apparent in any patient. All patients underwent otoneurological examinations, including pure-tone audiometry, caloric vestibular testing, and recording of the auditory brain stem responses (ABR). Six patients reported onset of hearing impairment during the last 3 yr. Two of them had flat sensorineural hearing loss; in the other cases, pure-tone au…
Evolution of syphilis incidence in Sibiu county (Romania) over a period of 10 years (2009-2018).
2021
Syphilis is the most common sexually transmitted disease that mainly affects socially active people, with a fluctuating worldwide incidence over the years. A retrospective study was conducted over a period of 10 years (2009-2018) that included 396 patients with syphilis diagnosed and monitored by Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital, Romania. During this period (2009-2018), we observed a decrease in the new cases of syphilis by 35.90%, and the average syphilis incidence was 9.90 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Syphilis was diagnosed more frequently in men with an average age of 35.39 years, from urban areas, with and educational level of grades 9-12, unmarried, workers, or without oc…
Electron transfer mechanism in Shewanella loihica PV-4 biofilms formed at graphite electrode
2012
Abstract Electron transfer mechanisms in Shewanella loihica PV-4 viable biofilms formed at graphite electrodes were investigated in potentiostat-controlled electrochemical cells poised at oxidative potentials (0.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl). Chronoamperometry (CA) showed a repeatable biofilm growth of S. loihica PV-4 on graphite electrode. CA, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and its first derivative shows that both direct electron transfer (DET) mediated electron transfer (MET) mechanism contributes to the overall anodic (oxidation) current. The maximum anodic current density recorded on graphite was 90 μA cm − 2 . Fluorescence emission spectra shows increased concentration of quinone derivatives and riboflavi…
Information Processing Schemes Based on Monolayer Protected Metallic Nanoclusters
2011
Nanostructures are potentially useful as building blocks to complement future electronics because of their high versatility and packing densities. The fabrication and characterization of particular nanostructures and the use of new theoretical tools to describe their properties are receiving much attention. However, the integration of these individual systems into general schemes that could perform simple tasks is also necessary because modern electronics operation relies on the concerted action of many basic units. We review here new conceptual schemes that can allow information processing with ligand or monolayer protected metallic nanoclusters (MPCs) on the basis of the experimentally de…
Weekly Cisplatin and Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy With Simultaneous Integrated Boost for Radical Treatment of Advanced Cervical Cancer in Elderly…
2016
Background: To evaluate the feasibility and clinical preliminary results of weekly cisplatin and volumetric-modulated arc therapy to the pelvis with simultaneous integrated boost to macroscopic disease in a cohort of elderly patients. Materials and Methods: Inclusion criteria of this prospective study were age ≥70 years, Karnofsky performance status 70 to 100, locally advanced histologically proven squamous cervical carcinoma, and patients unable to undergo brachytherapy. Radiation doses prescribed were 66 Gy to the macroscopic disease and 54 Gy to the pelvic nodes in 30 fractions. Weekly cisplatin dose was 40 mg/mq. Results: A total of 30 patients were recruited. Median follow-up was 32 mo…
