From monolayer to multilayer N-channel polymeric field-effect transistors with precise conformational order
2012
Monolayer field-effect transistors based on a high-mobility n-type polymer are demonstrated. The accurate control of the long-range order by Langmuir-Schafer (LS) deposition yields dense polymer packing exhibiting good injection properties, relevant current on/off ratio and carrier mobility in a staggered configuration. Layer-by-layer LS film transistors of increasing thickness are fabricated and their performance compared to those of spin-coated films.
Adiabatic versus Non-Adiabatic Electron Transfer at 2D Electrode Materials
2021
<div><div><div><p>Outer-sphere electron transfer (OS-ET) is a cornerstone elementary electrochemical reaction, yet microscopic understanding is largely based on idealized theories, developed in isolation from experiments that themselves are often close to the kinetic (diffusion) limit. Focusing on graphene as-grown on a copper substrate as a model 2D material/metal-supported electrode system, this study resolves the key electronic interactions in OS-ET, and identifies the role of graphene in modulating the electronic properties of the electrode/electrolyte interface. An integrated experimental-theoretical approach combining co-located multi-microscopy, centered on sc…

Face-selective adhesion of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals to renal epithelial cells
1996
The interaction between the most common urinary crystal, calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) and the surface of monkey renal epithelial cells of the BSC-1 line was investigated. The [100] face of exogenous COD crystals bound selectively and rapidly to the kidney cell surface. Cellular processes extended preferentially over the [100] face initially, and then progressively covered the crystal so that by 24 hours some crystals were observed beneath the plasma membrane. When nucleated from solution onto the surface of the cell monolayer, COD crystals oriented preferentially so that their [100] faces were in direct contact with the cell surface. In contrast, when siliconized glass was used as a subs…
Tail and Head Group Interactions in Phospholipid Monolayers
1996
Abstract The order/disorder transition of the phospholipid 1,2-dihexadecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and its derivatives was studied by X-ray reflection and thermodynamic measurements. We find that increasing the length of an ethylene oxide spacer (zero to three EO groups) between the phosphate group and the hydrophobic chains (i) induces a slight shift of the main transition, (ii) reduces the influence of the head groups on the chain lattice, and (iii) increases the head group length and promotes its hydration. For DH(EO)3PC in the ordered phase we find that the small phosphate groups (which are the main source of contrast in X-ray reflectivity) are homogeneously distributed within the h…
Bottom‐Up Fabrication of Semiconductive Metal-Organic Framework Ultrathin Films
2018
Though generally considered insulating, recent progress on the discovery of conductive porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers new opportunities for their integration as electroactive components in electronic devices. Compared to classical semiconductors, these metal-organic hybrids combine the crystallinity of inorganic materials with easier chemical functionalization and processability. Still, future development depends on the ability to produce high-quality films with fine control over their orientation, crystallinity, homogeneity, and thickness. Here self-assembled monolayer substrate modification and bottom-up techniques are used to produce preferentially oriented, ultrathin, con…
Study of the electrochemical and optical properties of fullerene and methano[60]fullerenediphosphonate derivatives in solution and as self-assembled …
2014
Four methanofullerenes with phosphonate groups attached to a C60 core were synthesized to probe their electrochemical and optical properties both in solution and as self-assembled monolayer structures (SAMs). As the methano[60]fullerenediphosphonate is a water soluble derivative of the fullerene it has high potential as an imaging molecule in biological applications and in optoelectronics. For the processing of fullerene based SAMs different electrode substrates (ITO, Au and Si) with specific anchoring groups (zirconium, cysteamine and amino-silane) were used. The formation of the C60-SAMs to the surfaces were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), infrared spectroscopy, contact ang…
Phase transitions in adsorbed layers formed on crystals of square and rectangular surface lattice
2000
Abstract This article gives a survey of phase transitions in adsorbed films on well defined surfaces of square and rectangular symmetry of the lattice. The discussion concentrates on the effects of periodic changes of the adsorbate–substrate potential on the structure and thermodynamic properties of adsorbed films. Different theoretical approaches are briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on those which explicitly take into account final corrugation of the surface potential. Several aspects of statistical mechanical description of phase transitions in surface layers, such as order–disorder, melting, commensurate–incommensurate transitions in monolayer films as well as transitions connected wit…
Growth of large liquid crystalline domains of phospholipids at air-water interfaces
1990
Abstract The fusion of condensed phase domains in a fluid environment in monolayers is studied. A system of electrodes permits the non-invasive and predetermined movement of single domains while the film is observed by fluorescence microscopy. Two domains fuse when they are brought into contact with special positions of their borderlines. The experiment yields information about the molecular structure of the domains and allows us to fabricate very large domains. The equilibrium size is estimated and verified.
Langmuir-Blodgett films of indandione-1,3 pyridinium betaine. III: Linear dichroism and non-linear optical properties
1996
Linear dichroism and second-harmonic generation (SHG) have been measured in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers of Z-type structure of amphiphilic indandione-1,3 pyridinium betaine (IPB) with an aliphatic tail containing 17 carbon atoms (C171PB). The dichr
