Polyoxometalates in Langmuir–Blodgett films: toward new magnetic materials

Abstract Polyoxometalates having various structures and properties can be organized by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. The adsorption of such polyanions along a positively charged monolayer of DODA (dimethyldioctadecylammonium) induces large changes in the compression isotherm and enables the transfer of the Langmuir film onto solid substrate. X-ray diffraction and infrared dichroism experiments demonstrate that the polyoxometalates are organized in monolayers within the LB films. Furthermore, these magnetic multilayers were characterized by their paramagnetic susceptibility measured by a SQUID magnetometer.

Molecular adhesion interactions between Langmuir monolayers and solid substrates

Abstract Substrate-monolayer adhesion interactions between differently prepared SiO2 surfaces and Langmuir monolayers were investigated. From the relation between the contact angle and the surface tension of a Langmuir monolayer in the configuration of Langmuir wetting the work of adhesion between the substrate and the monolayer as a function of the molecular packing and the transfer ratios was determined. Thus the molecular work of adhesion of different SiO2-dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine surfaces was quantified. The relation between the local adhesion interactions and the molecular packing and structure is presented and substrate-induced phase transitions are discussed.

Synthesis of a Fullerene[60] Cryptate and Systematic Langmuir-Blodgett and Thin-Film Investigations of Amphiphilic Fullerene Derivatives

The synthesis of the first fullerene cryptate 7 with a sodium ion bound to a benzo[2.2.2]cryptand covalently attached to a methanofullerene[60] is described. The amphiphilic properties of 7 as well as of a variety of other covalent fullerene derivatives with polar functional groups and the ability of these compounds to form Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface were investigated in a systematic study. New amphiphilic terphenyl liquid crystals for the preparation of highly ordered ultrathin films

Four new amphiphilic liquid crystals have been synthesized, in which terphenyl was used as the mesogenic unit. In order to enable the formation of Langmuir Monolayers at the air/water-interface, the molecules were equipped with slightly polar headgroups such as esters or a carboxylic acid group. All compounds can be transferred onto solid substrates. In addition, it is possible to prepare freely suspended films of at least one compound in the temperature range of the smectic phases. Physisorption Instabilities during Dynamic Langmuir Wetting

Continuous dynamic Langmuir wetting of lipid monolayers can create regular stripe patterns on the solid substrate surface. Monolayers doped with minor amounts of fluorescence dye may be deposited in stripes of alternating high and low dye concentration. In case of pure monolayers stripes are observed with AFM. The striations run normal to the dipping direction and have widths of typically several micrometres and distances varying from 1 to ≈ 100 μm. The stripe widths, distances, and fluorescence contrast depend on deposition speed, surface pressure, substrate surface preparation, and dye concentration. Langmuir−Blodgett Films of a Mo-Blue Nanoring [Mo142O429H10(H2O)49(CH3CO2)5(CH3CH2CO2)]30- (Mo142) by the Semiamphiphilic Method

Langmuir monolayers and LB films of the ring-shaped mixed-valence polyoxomolybdate [Mo142O429H10(H2O)49(CH3CO2)5(CH3CH2CO2)]30- (Mo142) dissolved in the aqueous subphase have been successfully fabricated by using the adsorption properties of a DODA monolayer. Infrared and ultraviolet−visible spectroscopy of the LB films indicates that Mo142 and DODA molecules are incorporated within these LB films. X-ray reflectivity experiments indicate that the LB films exhibit a well-defined lamellar structure formed by bilayers of DODA molecules alternating with monolayers of Mo142. Polyoxometalate Monolayers in Langmuir-Blodgett Films

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a variety of polyoxometalates of different shapes, sizes, and charges were prepared by taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these polyanions on a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread on water. Three different aspects were investigated. 1) The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of LB films containing the easily reducible polyoxoanion [P2Mo18O62]6-. Absorbance changes of these LB films deposited onto an ITO substrate have been induced by repeated switching of the applied potential. Dual-Emissive Photoluminescent Langmuir−Blodgett Films of Decatungstoeuropate and an Amphiphilic Iridium Complex

Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the decatungstoeuropate [Eu(W(5)O(18))(2)](9-) (EuW(10)) and the amphiphilic Ir complex 1 have been successfully fabricated by using the adsorption properties of the EuW(10) polyanion dissolved in the aqueous subphase onto a positively charged 1 monolayer at the air-water interface. The compression isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) of monolayers of 1 on pure water (1 monolayer) and on a subphase containing 10(-6) M EuW(10) and 10(-3) M NaCl (1/EuW(10) monolayer) have been studied.
