Continuum Monte Carlo simulation of phase transitions in rod-like molecules at surfaces

Stiff rod-like chain molecules with harmonic bond length potentials and trigonometric bond angle potentials are used to model Langmuir monolayers at high densities. One end of the rod-like molecules is strongly bound to a flat two-dimensional substrate which represents the air-water interface. A ground-state analysis is performed which suggests phase transitions between phases with and without collective uniform tilt. Large-scale off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations over a wide temperature range show in addition to the tilting transition the presence of a strongly constrained melting transition at high temperatures. A novel pseudospherical fluorinated iridium(III) derivative, Ir-dye/PF6, [Ir(F2-ppy)2(bpy)]PF6 (F2-ppy = 2-(2,4-difluoro)phenylpyridine, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine), has been organized by using a lipid matrix, DMPA (dimyristoyl-phosphatidic acid), in several molar ratios at the air–water interface. The molecular organization of both components and the degree of miscibility in the different mixed films have been inferred by surface techniques such as π–A isotherms, ellipsometry, reflection spectroscopy, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and IR spectroscopy for the LB films, additionally the results have been discussed according to the additivity rule. Abstract Culture medium that was recovered from tumor cell or fibroblast cultures during the plateau phase, and that was replenished by addition of glucose, glutamine, and serum and readjustment of pH had a distinct growth-inhibiting effect on monolayer cell cultures. The effect, which was not specific for a given cell strain, may be partially responsible for the "density inhibition" commonly observed in malignant cells grown in monolayer cultures. By modifying fresh growth media, it was shown that the growth inhibition observed can be partly attributed to the accumulation of lactate in the culture medium of plateau phase cells. Phase transitions in adsorbed (two dimensional) fluids and in adsorbed layers of molecules are studied with a combination of path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC), Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) and finite size scaling techniques. Entropy driven phase transitions in systems with purely repulsive interactions are analyzed as well phase diagrams of fluids with internal quantum states. Abstract The bending of microfabricated silicon nitride cantilevers was used to determine surface stress changes at solid–liquid interfaces. The radius of curvature of the bent cantilever is directly proportional to changes in the differential surface stress between its opposite sides. To demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of the technique, cantilevers coated on both sides with gold and densely packed monolayers of different thiols were put in a constant flow of aqueous electrolyte solution and the deflection was measured using a optical lever technique. Real-time microfluorescence studies of Langmuir-Blodgett deposition: Monolayer adsorption and desorption

Abstract Observations of the meniscus region in a typical Langmuir-Blodgett configuration are obtained using fluorescence microscopy. Studies of the meniscus position as a function of pH demonstrate that the meniscus height increases upon charging the monolayer owing to the repulsive interaction between monolayer and substrate surfaces. Through the correspondence between meniscus height and contact angle the adhesion forces between monolayer and substrate as a function of monolayer charge are assessed. The phenomenon of desorption upon resubmerging a deposited film is described and it is shown that the meniscus height at the onset of the desorption is greater for higher pH.

This study has focused on physical characterization and enzymatic hydrolysis of mixed monolayers of a natural phospholipid substrate and a polymerizable phospholipid analogue. Such a mixed system presents the possibility to stabilize model biomembranes, vary the molecular environment within the layer through polymerization and simultaneously examine these influences on monolayer structure. Phospholipase A2 was used here as a sensitive probe of the molecular environment within these mixed, polymerizable monolayers to complement information obtained from isotherm and isobar data.
