Wine consumption in the Mediterranean diet: old concepts in a new sight

2012

The term “Mediterranean diet” is widely employed to indicate the typical diet of the Countries located on the Mediter- ranean sea coast. A growing body of scientific literature pointed out the healthy effects of this diet. In recent years we investigated about the protective effects of a regular and moderate wine consumption. As we know, alcoholic and non alcoholic wine constituents are responsible of different effects by means of molecular and cell mechanisms. Among the non alcoholic components, polyphenols (for example resveratrol and quercetin) were deeply investigated. The aim of this review is to underline the effects of a moderate and regular wine drinking in the context of the Medite…

Non-alcoholic Wernicke's encephalopathy: From MRI findings of a case to differential diagnosis checklist

2018

Wernicke's encephalopathy is a serious neurological disorder secondary to thiamine deficiency in alcoholics. However, rarely it affects non-alcoholics. Here we present a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy in a non-alcoholic 56-year-old female, treated by endoscopic surgery for a duodenal ulcer two years before. She came to our attention for a sudden onset of a neurological syndrome characterized by visual deficits, diplopia, confusion, spatial disorientation and loss of short-term memory. An MRI scan showed the typical MRI findings of Wernicke's encephalopathy, which are discussed together with the possible differential diagnosis.

Hyperuricemia is associated with histological liver damage in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

2011

SUMMARY Background Hyperuricemia has been associated with metabolic disorders. In this line recent studies observed an independent link between higher uric acid serum levels and clinical diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Mean uric acid serum level was 5.75 mg ⁄ dL, and about 20% of patients had hyperuricemia, that was independently associated with younger age (OR 0.951, 95% CI 0.918-0.984, P = 0.004), lobular inflammation (OR 2.144, 95% CI 1.055-4.357, P = 0.03) and steatosis grade (OR 1.859, 95% CI 1.078-3.205, P = 0.02), by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Female gender (OR 2.656, 95% CI 1.190-5.928, P = 0.01), higher HOMA index (OR 1.219, 95% CI 1.043- 1.4…
