The majority of higher plants is able to adapt to the ecological factor light in a wide range. Depending on the light intensity and the light quality during growth, plant with an equal genotype develop into so-called low light and high light forms. The photosynthetic adaptation to different light conditions involves complex, balanced changes of many leaf features. Cyclic esters of adipic acid, suberic acid and sebacic acid were prepared by reaction of the acid dichlorides and pyrocatechol or hydroquinone in benzene under high dilution conditions. While only the cyclic dimers could be obtained from hydroquinone, pyrocatechol formed cyclic monomers as well as cyclic dimers (and also a cyclic dimer with succinic acid). The structure of all compounds was confirmed by1H-NMR- and mass spectra. The crystal structures of the pyrocatechol esters were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Liquid-crystalline copolymers with covalently attached dichroic dyes were synthesized and characterized. Copolymers with high anthraquinone and trisazo-dye content were obtained by copolymerization of dye monomers with 4-cyanophenyl 4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoate (1) and 6-acryloyloxyhexyl 4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzoate (2). Particular attention is given to the influence of the dye content and the dye structure on the liquid-crystalline behavior of the copolymers.

Abstract The reactivity of (2S,3S)-N1-methyl-2-hydroxy-3-methylamino-3-phenylpropanamide 1 , containing three nucleophilic centres has been studied against dihaloalkanes and aldehydes. Hexahydro-4-pyrimidinones or oxazolidines were obtained chemoselectively. Experimental results were explained by ‘ab initio’ calculations.

Thirteen low molecular weight oximes were prepared: one derivative of acetophenone (1), two derivatives of benzophenone (2 and 3), two derivatives of salicylaldehyde containing two phenolic nuclei (4c and 5c), and eight compounds in which a phenol unit is substituted by a 4-hydroxyiminomethylpyridiniummethyl group (8a–f, 10c, and 11c). Intrinsic viscosities, [η], second virial coefficients, A2, and interaction potentials, g12, for the ternary systems alcohol (1)/3-heptanone (2)/poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (3), with the unbranched alcohols methanol, ethanol and 1-propanol, were determined at 25°C. Taking into account the dependence of the viscometric interaction parameter, B, with the molecular weight of the polymer, the unperturbed dimensions parameter, KΘ, of the polymer was unambiguously obtained. Relationships between ΔKΘ (defined as ΔKΘ = ΔK − KΘ) and excess Gibbs energies, GE, and between excess viscosity, Δ[η], and GE allow to obtain equations relating A2 to ΔKΘ or to Δ[η]. New 4-substituted acyloxyproline derivatives with different hydrophobic properties of the acyl group were easily synthesized and used as catalysts in the direct asymmetric aldol reaction between cyclic ketones (cyclohexanone and cyclopentanone) and several substituted benzaldehydes. Reactions were carried out using water, this being the best reaction medium examined. Screening of these catalysts showed that compounds bearing the most hydrophobic acyl chains [4-phenylbutanoate and 4-(pyren-1-yl)butanoate] provided better results. The reactions of bicyclic enone (BCE, 1) with cyclopentadiene (Cp, 2) and the five-membered heterocyclic compounds (FHCs) furan 3 and N-methyl pyrrole 4 for the construction of polycyclic heterocyclic compounds have been studied at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. No reaction takes place in the absence of Lewis acid (LA) catalysts as a consequence of the high activation energy associated with these reactions. Electrophilic activation of BCE 1 by formation of a complex with the BF3 LA, 1-BF3, and solvent effects favor the reactions. However, a different reactivity is manifested by Cp 2 and FHCs 3 and 4.
