Slow-light solitons: Influence of relaxation

2008

We have applied the transformation of the slow-light equations to the Liouville theory that we developed in our previous work, to study the influence of relaxation on the soliton dynamics. We solved the problem of the soliton dynamics in the presence of relaxation and found that the spontaneous emission from the upper atomic level is strongly suppressed. Our solution proves that the spatial shape of the soliton is well preserved even if the relaxation time is much shorter than the soliton time length. This fact is of great importance for applications of the slow-light soliton concept in optical information processing. We also demonstrate that relaxation plays a role of resistance to the sol…

Nonlinear nonviscous hydrodynamical models for charge transport in the framework of extended thermodynamic methods

2002

This paper develops a procedure, based on methods of extended thermodynamics, to design nonlinear hydrodynamical models for charge transport in metals or in semiconductors, neglecting viscous phenomena. Models obtained in this way allow the study of the motion of electric charges in the presence of arbitrary external electric fields and may be useful when one wishes to study phenomena in a neighborhood of a stationary nonequilibrium process: indeed, the drift velocity of the charge gas with respect to the crystal lattice is not regarded as a small parameter.

Continuous-wave Lyman-alpha generation with solid-state lasers.

2009

A coherent continuous-wave Lyman-alpha source based on four-wave sum-frequency mixing in mercury vapor has been realized with solid-state lasers. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility is enhanced by the 6(1)S - 7(1)S two-photon resonance and the near 6(1)S-6(3)P one-photon resonance. The phase matching curve for this four-wave mixing scheme is observed for the first time. In addition we investigate the two-photon enhancement of the Lyman-alpha yield and observe that the maxima of Lyman-alpha generation are shifted compared to the two-photon resonances of the different isotopes.

Even harmonics from laser driven homonuclear molecules

2007

The dynamics of a homonuclear diatomic molecule driven by a laser pulse is obtained beyond the fixed nuclei approximation. Laser parameters can be adjusted to confine the electron over one of the two nuclei for a relatively long time or not. A time-resolved analysis of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by the molecule presents the usual odd harmonics far from confinement and even harmonics during the confinement periods. A physical interpretation of the results is given.

Existence and Uniqueness Results for Quasi-linear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

2006

We study the questions of existence and uniqueness of weak and entropy solutions for equations of type -div a(x, Du)+γ(u) ∋ φ, posed in an open bounded subset Ω of ℝN, with nonlinear boundary conditions of the form a(x, Du)·η+β(u) ∋ ψ. The nonlinear elliptic operator div a(x, Du) is modeled on the p-Laplacian operator Δp(u) = div (|Du|p−2Du), with p > 1, γ and β are maximal monotone graphs in ℝ2 such that 0 ∈ γ(0) and 0 ∈ β(0), and the data φ ∈ L1 (Ω) and ψ ∈ L1 (∂Ω). We also study existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for a general degenerate elliptic-parabolic problem with nonlinear dynamical boundary conditions. Particular instances of this problem appear in various phenomena with c…

Dynamical behaviour of an XX central spin model through Bethe ansatz techniques

2009

Following the Bethe ansazt procedure the exact dynamics of an XX central spin model is revealed. Particular initial conditions are analyzed and the consequent time evolution is compared with the exact solution obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrudinger equation. The interest towards spin systems and in particular central spin systems, is motivated by the recent developments in more applicative contexts.

Pseudobosons, Riesz bases, and coherent states

2010

In a recent paper, Trifonov suggested a possible explicit model of a PT-symmetric system based on a modification of the canonical commutation relation. Although being rather intriguing, in his treatment many mathematical aspects of the model have just been neglected, making most of the results of that paper purely formal. For this reason we are re-considering the same model and we repeat and extend the same construction paying particular attention to all the subtle mathematical points. From our analysis the crucial role of Riesz bases clearly emerges. We also consider coherent states associated to the model.

Rich dynamics and anticontrol of extinction in a prey-predator system

2019

This paper reveals some new and rich dynamics of a two-dimensional prey-predator system and to anticontrol the extinction of one of the species. For a particular value of the bifurcation parameter, one of the system variable dynamics is going to extinct, while another remains chaotic. To prevent the extinction, a simple anticontrol algorithm is applied so that the system orbits can escape from the vanishing trap. As the bifurcation parameter increases, the system presents quasiperiodic, stable, chaotic and also hyperchaotic orbits. Some of the chaotic attractors are Kaplan-Yorke type, in the sense that the sum of its Lyapunov exponents is positive. Also, atypically for undriven discrete sys…

Dissipation evidence for the quantum damped harmonic oscillator via pseudo-bosons

2011

It is known that a self-adjoint, time-independent hamiltonian can be defined for the quantum damped harmonic oscillator. We show here that the two vacua naturally associated to this operator, when expressed in terms of pseudo-bosonic lowering and raising operators, appear to be non square-integrable. This fact is interpreted as the evidence of the dissipation effect of the classical oscillator at a purely quantum level.
