Superconductive and insulating inclusions for linear and non-linear conductivity equations

2015

We detect an inclusion with infinite conductivity from boundary measurements represented by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the conductivity equation. We use both the enclosure method and the probe method. We use the enclosure method to prove partial results when the underlying equation is the quasilinear $p$-Laplace equation. Further, we rigorously treat the forward problem for the partial differential equation $\operatorname{div}(\sigma\lvert\nabla u\rvert^{p-2}\nabla u)=0$ where the measurable conductivity $\sigma\colon\Omega\to[0,\infty]$ is zero or infinity in large sets and $1<p<\infty$.

Symmetric frames on Lorentzian spaces

1991

Symmetric frames (those whose vectors are metrically indistinguishable) are studied both, from the algebraic and differential points of view. Symmetric frames which, in addition, remain indistinguishable for a given set of concomitants of the metric are analyzed, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a space‐time to admit them are given. A new version of the cosmological principle then follows. Natural symmetric frames (induced by local charts) are also considered, and the space‐times admitting them are obtained.

Elementary symmetric functions of two solvents of a quadratic matrix equations

2008

Quadratic matrix equations occur in a variety of applications. In this paper we introduce new permutationally invariant functions of two solvents of the n quadratic matrix equation X^2- L1X - L0 = 0, playing the role of the two elementary symmetric functions of the two roots of a quadratic scalar equation. Our results rely on the connection existing between the QME and the theory of linear second order difference equations with noncommutative coefficients. An application of our results to a simple physical problem is briefly discussed.

On the numerical evaluation of algebro-geometric solutions to integrable equations

2011

Physically meaningful periodic solutions to certain integrable partial differential equations are given in terms of multi-dimensional theta functions associated to real Riemann surfaces. Typical analytical problems in the numerical evaluation of these solutions are studied. In the case of hyperelliptic surfaces efficient algorithms exist even for almost degenerate surfaces. This allows the numerical study of solitonic limits. For general real Riemann surfaces, the choice of a homology basis adapted to the anti-holomorphic involution is important for a convenient formulation of the solutions and smoothness conditions. Since existing algorithms for algebraic curves produce a homology basis no…

Extended pseudo-fermions from non commutative bosons

2013

We consider some modifications of the two dimensional canonical commutation relations, leading to {\em non commutative bosons} and we show how biorthogonal bases of the Hilbert space of the system can be obtained out of them. Our construction extends those recently introduced by one of us (FB), modifying the canonical anticommutation relations. We also briefly discuss how bicoherent states, producing a resolution of the identity, can be defined.

Comments on space–time signature

1993

In terms of three signs associated to two vectors and to a 2-plane, a formula for the signature of any four-dimensional metric is given. In the process, a simple expression for the sign of the Lorentzian metric signature is obtained. The rela- tionship between these results and those already known are commented upon.

Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems of Schrödinger Type Admitting Eigenfunctions with Given Spectral Characteristics

2002

The following work is an extension of our recent paper [10]. We still deal with nonlinear eigenvalue problems of the form in a real Hilbert space ℋ with a semi-bounded self-adjoint operator A0, while for every y from a dense subspace X of ℋ, B(y ) is a symmetric operator. The left-hand side is assumed to be related to a certain auxiliary functional ψ, and the associated linear problems are supposed to have non-empty discrete spectrum (y ∈ X). We reformulate and generalize the topological method presented by the authors in [10] to construct solutions of (∗) on a sphere SR ≔ {y ∈ X | ∥y∥ℋ = R} whose ψ-value is the n-th Ljusternik-Schnirelman level of ψ| and whose corresponding eigenvalue is t…

Existenzsätze für schwach nichtlineare Operatorgleichungen und Anwendung auf Randwertaufgaben mit gewöhnlichen Differentialgleichungen

1979

With Schauder's fixpoint principle we establish an existence theorem for solutions of two simultaneous nonlinear operator equations of the formL iu=Miu, i=1,2, Li linear,M i continous. By applying this result to boundary value problems with ordinary differential equations we generalize results of Conti and Ehrmann in various directions.

Manifolds of quasiconformal mappings and the nonlinear Beltrami equation

2014

In this paper we show that the homeomorphic solutions to each nonlinear Beltrami equation $\partial_{\bar{z}} f = \mathcal{H}(z, \partial_{z} f)$ generate a two-dimensional manifold of quasiconformal mappings $\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{H}} \subset W^{1,2}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, we show that under regularity assumptions on $\mathcal{H}$, the manifold $\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{H}}$ defines the structure function $\mathcal{H}$ uniquely.

Period-multiplying bifurcations and multifurcations in conservative mappings

1983

The authors have investigated numerically and analytically the period-doubling bifurcations and multifurcations of the periodic orbits of the conservative sine-Gordon mappings. They have derived a general equation for the appearance of multifurcations in conservative mappings. In agreement with many recent studies, they also find evidence that such mappings possess universality properties. They also discuss the role of multifurcations in conservative mappings exhibiting chaotic behaviour.
