The decision process in forward-masked intensity discrimination: evidence from molecular analyses.

2009

In a two-interval forced-choice intensity discrimination task presenting a fixed increment, the level of the forward masker in interval 1 and interval 2 was sampled independently from the same normal distribution on each trial. Mean and standard deviation of the distribution were varied. Correlational analyses of the trial-by-trial data revealed different decision strategies depending on the relation between mean masker level and standard level. If the two levels were identical, listeners tended to select the interval containing the higher-level masker, behaving like an energy detector at the output of a temporal window of integration. For mean masker level higher than the standard level, m…

Bayesian modeling of the evolution of male height in 18th century Finland from incomplete data.

2012

Abstract Data on army recruits’ height are frequently available and can be used to analyze the economics and welfare of the population in different periods of history. However, such data are not a random sample from the whole population at the time of interest, but instead is skewed since the short men were less likely to be recruited. In statistical terms this means that the data are left-truncated. Although truncation is well-understood in statistics a further complication is that the truncation threshold is not known, may vary from time to time, and auxiliary information on the threshold is not at our disposal. The advantage of the fully Bayesian approach presented here is that both the …

Time-on-Task in Children with ADHD: An ex-Gaussian Analysis

2013

AbstractAlthough it is widely known that high intra-individual variability (IIV) is a key characteristic of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a detailed exploration of the IIV pattern during the time course of a cognitive task has never been carried out. In this study, 30 children with ADHD and 30 controls, were administered the Conners’ Continuous Performance Task (CPT-II). The across-block individual performance of the groups was analyzed using an ex-Gaussian approach, which enabled a clearer understanding of how individual response times (RTs) fluctuate during a task in comparison with conventional measures of central tendency. While the conventional measures showed a sign…

Differences Between Young and Old University Students on a Lexical Decision Task: Evidence Through an Ex-Gaussian Approach

2013

This work compared two common variants of a lexical decision task (LDT) through two different analysis procedures: first, the classical ANOVA method, and second, by fitting the data to an ex-Gaussian distribution function. Two groups of participants (old and young university students) had to perform, blocks of go/no-go and yes/no tasks. Reaction times and error rates were much lower in the go/no-go task than in the yes/no task. Changes in the ex-Gaussian parameter related to attention were found with word frequency but not with the type of LDT tasks. These findings suggest that word frequency shows an attentional cost that is independent of age.

Identification of Risk Factors Associated with Obesity and Overweight-A Machine Learning Overview.

2020

Social determining factors such as the adverse influence of globalization, supermarket growth, fast unplanned urbanization, sedentary lifestyle, economy, and social position slowly develop behavioral risk factors in humans. Multisensory integration of drumming actions: musical expertise affects perceived audiovisual asynchrony

2009

We investigated the effect of musical expertise on sensitivity to asynchrony for drumming point-light displays, which varied in their physical characteristics (Experiment 1) or in their degree of audiovisual congruency (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, 21 repetitions of three tempos x three accents x nine audiovisual delays were presented to four jazz drummers and four novices. In Experiment 2, ten repetitions of two audiovisual incongruency conditions x nine audiovisual delays were presented to 13 drummers and 13 novices. Participants gave forced-choice judgments of audiovisual synchrony. The results of Experiment 1 show an enhancement in experts' ability to detect asynchrony, especially fo…

Elastic Properties and Line Tension of Self-Assembled Bilayer Membranes

2013

The elastic properties of a self-assembled bilayer membrane are studied using the self-consistent field theory, applied to a model system composed of flexible amphiphilic chains dissolved in hydrophilic polymeric solvents. Examining the free energy of bilayer membranes with different geometries allows us to calculate their bending modulus, Gaussian modulus, two fourth-order membrane moduli, and the line tension. The dependence of these parameters on the microscopic characteristics of the amphiphilic chain, characterized by the volume fraction of the hydrophilic component, is systematically studied. The theoretical predictions are compared with the results from a simple monolayer model, whic…

How to simulate normal data sets with the desired correlation structure

2010

The Cholesky decomposition is a widely used method to draw samples from multivariate normal distribution with non-singular covariance matrices. In this work we introduce a simple method by using singular value decomposition (SVD) to simulate multivariate normal data even if the covariance matrix is singular, which is often the case in chemometric problems. The covariance matrix can be specified by the user or can be generated by specifying a subset of the eigenvalues. The latter can be an advantage for simulating data sets with a particular latent structure. This can be useful for testing the performance of chemometric methods with data sets matching the theoretical conditions for their app…

Statistical validation of rival models for observable stochastic process and its identification

2011

In this paper, for statistical validation of rival (analytical or simulation) models collected for modeling observable process in stochastic system (say, transportation or service system), a uniformly most powerful invariant (UMPI) test is developed from the generalized maximum likelihood ratio (GMLR). This test can be considered as a result of a new approach to solving the Behrens-Fisher problem when covariance matrices of multivariate normal populations (compared with respect to their means) are different and unknown. The test makes use of an invariant statistic whose distribution, under the null hypothesis, does not depend on the unknown (nuisance) parameters. The sample size and thresho…

Adaptive Gaussian particle method for the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation

2012

The Fokker-Planck equation describes the evolution of the probability density for a stochastic ordinary differential equation (SODE). A solution strategy for this partial differential equation (PDE) up to a relatively large number of dimensions is based on particle methods using Gaussians as basis functions. An initial probability density is decomposed into a sum of multivariate normal distributions and these are propagated according to the SODE. The decomposition as well as the propagation is subject to possibly large numeric errors due to the difficulty to control the spatial residual over the whole domain. In this paper a new particle method is derived, which allows a deterministic error…
