Comparison of genomic sequences clustering using Normalized Compression Distance and Evolutionary Distance

2008

Genomic sequences are usually compared using evolutionary distance, a procedure that implies the alignment of the sequences. Alignment of long sequences is a long procedure and the obtained dissimilarity results is not a metric. Recently the normalized compression distance was introduced as a method to calculate the distance between two generic digital objects, and it seems a suitable way to compare genomic strings. In this paper the clustering and the mapping, obtained using a SOM, with the traditional evolutionary distance and the compression distance are compared in order to understand if the two distances sets are similar. The first results indicate that the two distances catch differen…

A simple algorithm for retrieval of the optical thickness at L-band from SMOS data

2012

Vegetation indices are indicators for analyzing the properties of vegetation. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from optical remote sensing data is one of the most commonly used vegetation indices, which can exhibit the ecological characteristics of leafy materials, but lacks the ability to directly provide information on the woody materials. In this paper, we developed Microwave Vegetation Indices (MVIs) from the L-band Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) data, which is an effective means to detect the information of branches and trunks. The theory of MVIs is derived from the tau-omega model. To minimize the influence from the uncertain soil surface radiation, a paramet…

Monitoring global vegetation with the Yearly Land Cover Dynamics (YLCD) method

2011

Global vegetation has been traditionally monitored mainly through the use of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Land surface temperature (LST) provides additional information, and is generally less affected by atmospheric conditions when water vapor is taken into account. The Yearly Land Cover Dynamics (YLCD) method can then be used to retrieve 3 parameters which allow for a good differentiation between biomes at the global and local levels. Using NASA's Long Term Data Record (LTDR), the YLCD method has been applied to IDR (iterative Interpolation for Data Reconstruction) reconstructed LTDR data, in order to account for atmospheric contamination of part of the dataset for a …

Using NASA'S Long Term Data Record version 3 for the monitoring of land surface vegetation

2011

Numerous datasets have been made available for the observation of our planet from space. The aim of this work is the observation of changes in vegetation, through the use of a recent remote sensing dataset, NASA's Long Term Data Record (LTDR). Several authors have pointed out that vegetation monitoring benefits of the simultaneous use of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST). Therefore, this work presents the procedure developed to monitor vegetation with the LTDR dataset, using both NDVI and LST parameters. This procedure includes data preprocessing (estimation of NDVI and LST, orbital drift correction, atmospherically contaminated data reconstruc…

Automatic detection and agronomic characterization of olive groves using high-resolution imagery and LIDAR data

2014

The Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union grants subsidies for olive production. Areas of intensified olive farming will be of major importance for the increasing demand for oil production of the next decades, and countries with a high ratio of intensively and super-intensively managed olive groves will be more competitive than others, since they are able to reduce production costs. It can be estimated that about 25-40% of the Sicilian oliviculture must be defined as “marginal”. Modern olive cultivation systems, which permit the mechanization of pruning and harvest operations, are limited. Agronomists, landscape planners, policy decision-makers and other professionals have a grow…

Acute appendicitis in a patient with situs viscerum inversus totalis: Role of laparoscopic approach. A case report and brief literature review

2020

Highlights • Abdominal pain due to acute appendicitis in one of the most causes of access to Emergency Room requiring surgical consult and treatment. • The occurrence of anatomical anomalies should be considered especially when clinical and imaging features are misleading. In these cases laparoscopic surgery can be a safe tool in order to confirm uncertain diagnosis. • We report a case of acute appendicitis in a 23-year-old Caucasian men with situs viscerum inversus detected on radiological investigation. • Laparoscopic approach was used to confirm the diagnosis and to perform appendectomy. Trocars placement was tailored for this peculiar case. • Situs viscerum inversus and midgut malrotati…

Strain induced renormalization of transport properties in UPt3 thin films

1996

The growth of sputter deposited UPt3 thin films on Al2O3 (1012), LaAlO3 (111) and SrTiO3 (111) was investigated. We found strongly 0001-textured growth of UPt3 in a small compositional range of 23–25% uranium content. For Al2O3-and LaAlO3-substrates no in-plane order could be observed whereas epitaxial growth was initiated on SrTiO3 (111): The growth can be identified as Vollmer-Weber like resulting in the formation of large lateral strain as a consequence of the growth mode and a lattice misfit of −4.3% between UPt3 (0001) and SrTiO3 (111). Strong deviations from the typical heavy-fermion characteristics in electronic transport properties like resistivity, magnetoresitivity and Hall-effect…

Multi-Path U-Net Architecture for Cell and Colony-Forming Unit Image Segmentation

2022

U-Net is the most cited and widely-used deep learning model for biomedical image segmentation. In this paper, we propose a new enhanced version of a ubiquitous U-Net architecture, which improves upon the original one in terms of generalization capabilities, while addressing several immanent shortcomings, such as constrained resolution and non-resilient receptive fields of the main pathway. Our novel multi-path architecture introduces a notion of an individual receptive field pathway, which is merged with other pathways at the bottom-most layer by concatenation and subsequent application of Layer Normalization and Spatial Dropout, which can improve generalization performance for small datase…
