Innovation or Normalization in E-Campaigning?

2008

■ Scholars have seldom tested the innovation and normalization paradigm of e-campaigning over time. Particularly outside the US, there is a lack of comparative analyses of candidate or party websites that deal with the concept's temporal validity and scope. The article addresses this research gap through a longitudinal content and structural analysis of German party websites in the 2002 and 2005 national elections. The results provide empirical evidence of a twofold development of federal e-campaigns: while the major party websites evolved over time in information density, interactivity and sophistication (innovation), the minor parties were throughout characterized by an underutilization o…

Properties of hyperons in chiral perturbation theory

2009

The development of chiral perturbation theory in hyperon phenomenology has been troubled due to power-counting subtleties and to a possible slow convergence. Furthermore, the presence of baryon-resonances, e.g. the lowest-lying decuplet, complicates the approach, and the inclusion of their effects may become necessary. Recently, we have shown that a fairly good convergence is possible using a renormalization prescription of the loop-divergencies which recovers the power counting, is covariant and consistent with analyticity. Moreover, we have systematically incorporated the decuplet resonances taking care of both power-counting and $consistency$ problems. A model-independent understanding o…

Building Composite Indicators With Unweighted-TOPSIS

2023

Composite indicators have been widely used in a large number of fields, including innovation and entrepreneurship as a useful tool for conveying summary information about overall performance in a relatively simple way. The construction of composite indicators implies several stages concerning collection of data, selection of criteria and individual indicators, normalization and weighting of criteria and indicators, aggregation, and comparison of overall performance of the alternatives or options. This article aims at contributing to the construction of synthetic indicators by showing with a real example, how the proposed methodology can overcome the problem of the establisment of the decisi…

Palmprint principal lines extraction

2014

The palmprint recognition has become a focus in biological recognition and image processing fields. In this process, the features extraction (with particular attention to palmprint principal line extraction) is especially important. Although a lot of work has been reported, the representation of palmprint is still an open issue. In this paper we propose a simple, efficient, and accurate palmprint principal lines extraction method. Our approach consists of six simple steps: normalization, median filtering, average filters along four prefixed directions, grayscale bottom-hat filtering, combination of bottom-hat filtering, binarization and post processing. The contribution of our work is a new…

Ferroelastic transition in Kbr:Kcn studied by neutrons, x-rays and ultrasonic

1986

The ferroelastic phase transition of (KBr) 0 27 (KNC) 0.73 has been studied by X-ray diffraction, ultrasonics and inelastic neutron scattering. It is the first example of a cubic crystal where the elastic shear constant C 44 softens completely corresponding to the m = 2 universality class. C 44 and the Bragg intensities show a non-classical critical behaviour.

Multi-temporal and Multi-source Remote Sensing Image Classification by Nonlinear Relative Normalization

2016

Remote sensing image classification exploiting multiple sensors is a very challenging problem: data from different modalities are affected by spectral distortions and mis-alignments of all kinds, and this hampers re-using models built for one image to be used successfully in other scenes. In order to adapt and transfer models across image acquisitions, one must be able to cope with datasets that are not co-registered, acquired under different illumination and atmospheric conditions, by different sensors, and with scarce ground references. Traditionally, methods based on histogram matching have been used. However, they fail when densities have very different shapes or when there is no corres…

Smooth Feshbach map and operator-theoretic renormalization group methods

2003

Abstract A new variant of the isospectral Feshbach map defined on operators in Hilbert space is presented. It is constructed with the help of a smooth partition of unity, instead of projections, and is therefore called smooth Feshbach map . It is an effective tool in spectral and singular perturbation theory. As an illustration of its power, a novel operator-theoretic renormalization group method is described and applied to analyze a general class of Hamiltonians on Fock space. The main advantage of the new renormalization group method over its predecessors is its technical simplicity, which it owes to the use of the smooth Feshbach map.

The Latvian LGBT Movement and Narratives of Normalization

2019

The article examines the visibility of the LGBT community in Latvian public discourse of the last thirty years and the history of LGBT activism. Special attention is paid to the normalization of same-sex relationships: to the social processes through which ideas and actions of a social group begin crossing the threshold of deviance toward becoming “normal” and acceptable to the majority. The history of Latvian LGBT activism can be seen as a struggle for normalization of the LGBT community and overcoming the effects of its pathologization and criminalization. More than 25 years after the decriminalization of male same-sex relationships, it should be asked why the level of homophobia in socie…

Barreras para escapar de la violencia de género: la mirada de las profesionales. Barriers to escape Violence: the professionals' perspective.

2015

This article addresses, from the perspective of social workers, the difficulties faced by battered women and socially excluded who are living in Valencia’s centers for women’s protection. The following information has been gathered with different research techniques, especially through the use of focus groups and interviews. The most important barriers to escape violence described by the interviewees can be classified as external and internal. The former include stunted social and family networks, the lack of economic resources, the existence of children and the absence of institutional resources. In other words, obstacles related to the social structure. The latter refer to the normalizati…
