The Concept of Authority
1995
There is a general agreement that the concept of practical authority can be analysed as a right to impose obligations or commands on its subject and that this right is correlated with a duty to obey. Usually it is also implied that these rights and duties are mutually recognized. Thus authority is considered as a consensus-based notion. But it is important to notice that political authorities can have other functions, too. They can change the normative positions of their subjects by permitting, authorizing, delegating, exercising a veto, by declaring acts valid or invalid, etc. They can create and change definition rules, e.g. determine the values of units of payment. They are often authori…
“I take an oath to the state, not the government”: Career Trajectories and Professional Ethics of Ghanaian Public Servants
2014
This chapter explores normative statements and narratives that feature role models or castigate discrimination and patronage. It argues that these ideals and stories create moral boundaries and support an 'esprit de corps' of dedicated public servants. The chapter discusses how such particularist identities are mobilised in the construction of a universalist ethos of public service. It gives an overview of the educational background of the public servants. The chapter discusses their experiences and views with respect to two major themes: firstly, the motivation to join the public service and the factors they identify as determining their own and other public servants' career trajectories; …

The Relationship Between Work-Related Behavior and Experience Patterns and Organizational Commitment
2017
The challenges of today’s working life lead to stressful experiences and therefore to different types of coping patterns. The relationship between these coping patterns and organizational and professional commitment is not yet fully researched. This study has been conducted with about 180 participants using the questionnaires Work-related Behavior and Experience Patterns (AVEM—AVEM is the acronym for “Arbeitsorientiertes Verhaltens—und Erlebensmuster”which translates to Work-related Behavior and Experience Patterns) and the Test of Affective, Normative and Continuous Commitment to the Organization, the Profession and the Type of Employment. The results showed a significant correlation betwe…

Mediation in Spain: Novelties Derived from the Boost of the European Legislator
2015
This paper seeks to analyse the Act 5/2012, of 6 July of mediation in civil and commercial matters, which has resulted in the definite incorporation to the Spanish legal system of Directive 2008/52/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008. This law intends to enhance the access to mediation as a way of dispute resolution between private parties, which, while it had been already in practice in some Autonomous Communities in certain matters, lacked of a specific normative body to regulate it. The law is certainly limited in regulating certain aspects of mediation, whereas in some other aspects it still raises some concerns. All of these questions are to be examined in t…
Symptoms of Depression and Status in the European Labour Market
2017
This study uses three rounds of European Social Survey to study the effects from the status in the labour market of individuals from general population on the strength of their depression symptoms. Particular interest is in the comparison of the mismatched (over- and undereducated) to other kinds of status. Mismatch is defined by a normative (ISCO-based) measure. The main result is that not only overeducation but also (though to a smaller extent) undereducation is associated with an increased presence of depression symptoms. Health, income, personality, religion, the frequency of watching news on TV and partner’s status in the labour market are among the independent variables.
Why should We Bother? Ethical and Social Issues in Individualized Medicine
2006
Individualized medicine, methodologically rooted in pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, is now venturing into clinical application. Prescribing the right drug in the right dose to the right patient according to specific health needs and individual characteristics is a core mission of individualized medicine. The intrinsic values of this mission are so self-evident that--at first glance--the ethical and social issues raised by individualized medicine seem to be negligible. However, the translation of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics into clinical routine not only requires the collection and evaluation of large amounts of individual genetic data, but also heralds the need for further …
Normativity all the way down: from normative realism to pannormism
2017
In this paper, I will give an argument for what I call pannormism, the view according to which if x instantiates a metaphysically basic normative property F, then whatever grounds the being of x also instantiates F. In slogan form: if there is normativity, there is normativity all the way down. Such pannormism is in many ways analogous to panpsychism, and my discussion also contains an important lesson for panpsychism, a way to avoid its so-called combination problem. In Sect. 1, I present the argument; in Sect. 2, I discuss its conclusion.
The Psycho-Biological Bases of Sports Supporters' Behaviour: The Virtuous Supporter
2012
Given current studies in moral psychology and following recent cases of wrong behaviour occurred in elite sporting events – e.g. the racist chants scandals in the English Premier League or the events following Mourinho's poke in the eye scandal – I shall analyse the extent to which supporters' brain make-up is determining them to behave in an ‘unfair way’. Yet this paper is not just a work on descriptive ethics, but a normative ethics work. Therefore, once I have developed the ‘psycho-biological account of sports supporters’, I shall explore whether or not a more virtuous account of sports supporting can be drawn. In order to fulfil this normative task I shall appeal to the concept of ‘fair…
