Plants have evolved efficient mechanisms to resist pathogens. The earliest defense response is the hypersensitive response (HR) considered as the main step leading to plant systemic acquired resistance (SAR) that protects the whole plant against a large spectrum of pathogens. A new species of Pamphagus (Orthoptera: Pamphagidae) from Algeria with a key to all the species of the genus

The authors describe Pamphagus milevitanus n. sp. occurring in the North and South highlands of Constantine, in Mila, Setif and Oum-el Bouaghi provinces, where it is fairly common. They compare the characters of this species with those of the most related species of the genus and present a complete plate and a key to all the species of the genus Pamphagus known to date.

New and poorly known Holarctic species of Boletina Staeger, 1840 (Diptera, Mycetophilidae)

The genus Boletina is a species rich group of fungus gnats. Members of the genus are mainly known from temperate, boreal and arctic biomes. Phylogeny of the genus is still poorly resolved, dozens of species are insufficiently described and undescribed species are often discovered, especially from samples taken from the boreal zone. Four new species are described. Boletina valteri Salmela sp.n. (Finland), Boletina kullervoi Salmela sp.n. (Finland), B. hyperborea Salmela sp.n. The Eurasian Modern Pollen Database (EMPD), version 2

The Eurasian (née European) Modern Pollen Database (EMPD) was established in 2013 to provide a public database of high-quality modern pollen surface samples to help support studies of past climate, land cover, and land use using fossil pollen. The EMPD is part of, and complementary to, the European Pollen Database (EPD) which contains data on fossil pollen found in Late Quaternary sedimentary archives throughout the Eurasian region. The EPD is in turn part of the rapidly growing Neotoma database, which is now the primary home for global palaeoecological data. Genetic variation is the fuel of evolution, with standing genetic variation especially important for short-term evolution and local adaptation. To date, studies of spatiotemporal patterns of genetic variation in natural populations have been challenging, as comprehensive sampling is logistically difficult, and sequencing of entire populations costly. Recent increase of ulcerative lesions caused by Anisakis spp. in cetaceans from the north-east Atlantic

Abstract Species of Anisakis typically infect the stomach of cetaceans worldwide, often causing ulcerative lesions that may compromise the host's health. These nematodes also cause anisakiasis or allergic reactions in humans. To assess the risks of this emerging zoonosis, data on long-term changes in Anisakis infections in cetaceans are necessary. Climate–human interactions contributed to historical forest recruitment dynamics in Mediterranean subalpine ecosystems

Long-term tree recruitment dynamics of subalpine forests mainly depend on temperature changes, but little is known about the feedbacks between historical land use and climate. Here, we analyze a southern European, millennium-long dataset of tree recruitment from three high-elevation pine forests located in Mediterranean mountains (Pyrenees, northeastern Spain; Pollino, southern Italy; and Mt.
