Symptom hyper-expression in advanced cancer patients with anxiety and depression admitted to an acute supportive/palliative care unit

2019

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare symptom expression in advanced cancer patients with depression and anxiety and in patients with no such symptoms. Methods: Secondary analysis of a previous study assessing the role of an acute palliative supportive care unit (APSCU) in a comprehensive cancer center. Patients completed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) at admission (T0) and 7 days after or at discharge (T7). Results: Three hundred-fourteen consecutive cancer patients admitted to the APSCU were surveyed. Eighty-six and 66 patients improved their level of depression and anxiety, respectively (passing from ≥ 4 to 0–3, from T0 to T7), after that palliative care interventi…

Pigment variant of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis

1995

A 6-year-old girl had progressive ataxia, and visual disturbances resulting in blindness. She died in her sleep at age 22 years. She shared with her sister and paternal relatives bilateral pes cavus deformities and impaired deep-tendon reflexes which suggested Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Her sister, who also had both polyneuropathy and a progressive central nervous system (CNS) disease, did not have pigmentary retinopathy. At autopsy, the patient was found to have neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL) marked by intraneuronal accumulation of autofluorescent granular lipopigments in ballooned perikarya and conspicuous extraneuronal pigmentation of subcortical grey matter, but without axonal s…

Incontinence and constipation in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa : Results of a multicenter study from a German web-based registry for chil…

2019

OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), and fecal incontinence (FI) are common disorders in childhood and are frequently accompanied by comorbid psychiatric disorders. Despite a high association between urinary and fecal incontinence with psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, research on comorbidity between incontinence and anorexia nervosa (AN) remains scarce. Yet, it is well known that somatic consequences of AN include metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders. The study sought to assess the prevalence of incontinence and constipation in children and adolescents with AN and to examine associations of these two symptoms with body weight at admission …

Associations of neuropsychiatric symptoms and antidepressant prescription with survival in Alzheimer's disease

2017

Objective Depression is associated with increased mortality in community samples. The use of antidepressant medication may also increase mortality, however, it is still unclear whether taking antidepressants before or after a diagnosis of dementia influences survival. Design Retrospective. Setting A cohort with a diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD) from a large mental health and dementia care database in South London, linked to hospitalization and mortality data. Participants Mild dementia (Mini-Mental State Examination ≥18/30) at the point of diagnosis. Measurements We ascertained antidepressant prescription, either in the 6 months before or after dementia diagnosis, and used the HoNOS65+,…

Health status and quality of life of elderly persons with severe hemophilia born before the advent of modern replacement therapy

2009

SUMMARY BACKGROUND: More and more people with severe hemophilia reach an old age thanks to an effective treatment. There is no information on the health status and quality of life of elderly people with hemophilia born at a time when replacement therapy was hardly available. METHODS: Italian patients with severe hemophilia, aged >or=65 years and hence born in 1942 or earlier, were compared with elderly men without bleeding disorders matched for age, sex, geography and social status. The following aspects were evaluated: concomitant illness, orthopedic status, physical functioning and cognitive status. Measurements of generic and disease-specific health-related quality of life were also obta…

Lower self-reported depression in patients with erectile dysfunction after treatment with sildenafil

2001

Abstract Background: Depressive symptoms in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) may improve under successful ED treatment. Self-reported depressive symptoms were compared in men with ED after sildenafil treatment to a group of untreated patients. Methods: In an open study, self-reported depressive symptoms of 54 men after successful treatment with sildenafil (>4 weeks) and 51 men awaiting ED treatment were investigated with the Center of Epidemiologic Studies–Depression Scale (CES–D). CES–D items were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis and group differences in CES–D items and factors were analyzed. Results: Groups were comparable with respect to demographic characteristics and illne…

The role of fear-avoidance cognitions and behaviors in patients with chronic tinnitus.

2012

The current study investigated the role of fear-avoidance-a concept from chronic pain research-in chronic tinnitus. A self-report measure the "Tinnitus Fear-Avoidance Cognitions and Behaviors Scale (T-FAS)" was developed and validated. Furthermore, the role of fear-avoidance behavior as mediator of the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and tinnitus handicap was investigated. From a clinical setting, N = 373 patients with chronic tinnitus completed questionnaires assessing tinnitus handicap (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory), anxiety, depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), anxiety sensitivity (Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3), personality factors (Big Five Inventory-10), and fear-…

Fatores que influenciam a ocorrência de otite media entre crianças sicilianas com infecções de vias aéreas superiores

2016

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Upper respiratory tract infection is a nonspecific term used to describe an acute infection involving the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx and larynx. Upper respiratory tract infections in children are often associated with Eustachian tube dysfunction and complicated by otitis media, an inflammatory process within the middle ear. Environmental, epidemiologic and familial risk factors for otitis media (such as sex, socioeconomic and educational factors, smoke exposure, allergy or duration of breastfeeding) have been previously reported, but actually no data about their diffusion among Sicilian children with upper respiratory tract infections are available. OBJECTIVE: T…

Repair of complete bilateral cleft lip with severely protruding premaxilla performing a premaxillary setback and vomerine ostectomy in one stage surg…

2015

Background: The authors present a technique for selected cases of CBCL. The primary repair of the CBCL with a severely protruding premaxilla in one stage surgery is very difficult, essentially because a good muscular apposition is difficult, forcing synchronously to do a premaxillary setback to facilitate subsequent bilateral lip repair and, thus, achieving satisfactory results. We achieve this by a reductive ostectomy on the vomero- premaxillary suture. Material and Methods: 4 patients with CBCL and severely protruding premaxilla underwent premaxillary setback by vomerine ostectomy at the same time of lip repair in the past 24 months. The extent of premaxillary setback varied between 9 and…
